22 ounce bottle poured in a wide tulip glass. I’ve been sitting on this bottle for quite some time. Label says “Release #4”, which the Epic website informs me was brewed on March 22nd, 2011. It has been properly stored since purchase.
Appearance: Translucent gold with a cap of fat bubbles. The head slowly sinks until it’s floating an eighth of an inch above the surface.
Smell: Imagine creating an apple and banana fruit salad, and dusting it with ground cloves.
Taste: It’s like eating a slice of refrigerated apple pie on an unseasonably hot October afternoon. Tart apples, cloves, and cinnamon. There’s also a hint of mint, which gives the aftertaste the suggestion of apple flavored bubblegum.
Mouthfeel: Light body, very bubbly. Slightly tongue-numbing from the cloves and ginger.
Overall: I thoroughly enjoyed this eccentric saison. As noted above, it would probably be the perfect compliment to a hot Indian summer. Perfect timing for me since it’s June.

A: Pale golden, crystal clear; no lacing

S: So much tart, granny smith apples; a bit vinous; so tart and fruity and strange but I really like what's going on here

T: Wow, so dry and tart and fruity; this is strange and funky and tart but I think I like it

F: A little bit of carbonation; decent mouth feel on finish

O: I like this beer but it's a bit weird; I don't know if I could drink too much of it but that's okay, I like what I've got here

22 ounce bottle into tulip glass; release #9 bottled 11/22/2011. Pours lightly hazy golden straw color with a 2 finger foamy white head with good retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Spotty foamy lacing clings on the glass, with plenty of streaming carbonation retaining the head. Aromas of big pear, tart green apple, apple skin, lemon, pepper, clove, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, cardamom, coriander, allspice, floral, wheat, grass, and yeast earthiness. Damn nice aromas with good balance and complexity of spice notes with fruity yeast esters; and good strength. Taste of sour green apple, pear, lemon, pepper, clove, nutmeg, cinnamon, ginger, coriander, cardamom, allspice, floral, grass, wheat, and yeast earthiness. Moderate earthy/fruity tartness on the finish; with lingering notes of tart apple, pear, clove, pepper, coriander, nutmeg, ginger, floral, grass, wheat, and earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice balance and complexity of spice and yeast ester flavors; with a light malt balance and no cloying flavors after the finish. High carbonation and medium bodied; with a very crisp, moderately prickly, and dry mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with hardly any warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a very nice spiced saison. All around nice balance and complexity of spice and yeast flavors; very smooth and crisp to drink. A very enjoyable offering.

22oz bottle.

Pours hazy gold with a half inch head of white. A partial skim coat on the surface and a few traces of lacing for the duration.

Aromatics lead off with spice-dusted apples and cut grass. Cloves, wet hay and apple cider.

Light bodied with a crisp mouthfeel.

Mulled cider with shades of tart wheat, lemon, and spicy phenols on the palate.

Finishes faintly tart and thin with lingering apple cider and spice.

I like the idea of an apple saison, but this beer needs more of both of those qualities.

Presentation: Nice looking classy label with a nice color scheme. Label states “Exceptional Series, Bottle Conditioned”, gives a small back story on the beer, AVB info, small bit of brewery info, States “Release #19”.

Appearance: After a 10min warm period I aggressively poured this from its 22oz bomber into a 16oz snifter. Pours out a hazy golden yellow color with a 1½ finger white slightly creamy foam head and champagne like bubbles rising from glass. Head retention was 2min 41sec before fading to a thick frothy coating and ring. Excellent lacing.

Smell/Aroma: Smells of wheat and bubble gum Belgian yeast with a tart apple aroma and a coriander caper scent.

Flavor/Taste: Tastes if of sour green apples on the front-end that turns spicy with hints of coriander and pepper. A big sweet bubble gum Belgian yeast flavor dominates the midpoint along with hints of sweet white wine. The back-end has a spicy heat along with an apple Belgian yeast finish.

MouthFeel/Drinkability: Heavy carbonation least to a medium bodied champagne feel. Drinkable but bloating.

Overall/Comments: Very interesting brew that had a unique flavor profile. The high ABV was not masked very well and the high carbonation both left a lot to be desired. I think this could benefit tremendously from a bit of aging and mellowing. Classified as a Saison/Farmhouse Ale @ 9.8% ABV. Consumed 5/12/2013.

A: The beer is hazy pale yellow in color. It poured with a thin white head that quickly died down , leaving some lacing on the surface and a thin collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Light to moderate aromas of sour apples and spices are present in the nose.
T: The taste is similar to the smell, except that the spices are a little more prominent initially and the sour apple flavors are most noticeable towards the finish.
M: It feels light- to medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer isn't dominated by sour apple flavors, but these help keep the spices from being overpowering. It is an interesting take on the style.

Note: Release #15

Release #15

A: Pours a cloudy pale straw yellow in color with light to moderate amounts of visible carbonation and some lemon yellow highlights. The beer has a half finger tall fizzy white head that quickly reduces to a couple of small patches of very thin film and a thin ring at the edges of the glass. Minimal amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Upfront there are moderate to strong aromas of spices - ginger, cinnamon, coriander, and anise. After that, the light to moderate aromas of sour apple come through.

T: This beer has a really unusual flavor but one that I enjoyed - it started out with some light flavors of wheat and spices (cinnamon, ginger, coriander, and just a touch of anise stand out. Then there are some lighter flavors of sour apple that come through in the finish. Minimal amounts of bitterness.

M: Light bodied with heavy amounts of carbonation. Moderate amounts of acidic prickliness. Light amounts of dryness in the finish.

O: This one is really interesting with the plethora of spices upfront and the sour apple flavors in the finish. Quite refreshing and easy to drink - would be great on a hot summer afternoon.

On draft, into a 12 oz snifter.

A - Sneaky to the eye, looks like a light ABV hefe or something common. Nice level of carbonation and a good lasting lace ring.

S - Apple dominant, also crackery and yeasty, little bit of spice mixed in as well.

T - Drinks alot like a chardonnay, one with apple and pear flavors as the backbone. Its sweet, and has a little spiciness feel to it as well.

M - Not like a saison I dont think, that spiciness plays as alcoholic heat to me and this again feels more like a chardonnay than an ale.

O - Made for an interesting change of pace, but back to the beers that come across as beer...
