American Pale Lager |  5.30% ABV

Availability: Year-round

Notes/Commercial Description:
A full strength and quaffable American lager with a hint of European flavor. Pfeifferhorn lager has a subtle malt flavor, and clean, crisp finish. A fine spicy and slightly herbal noble hop profile which barely lingers on the palate.

22 oz bomber served into a shaker pint glass.

Appearance: This one pours an almost clear light yellow. The head thinned as I drank it, but did not completely go away.

Smell: Being a pale American lager, this one has a pretty straight forward smell. Budweiser wishes that they could smell this good. I can smell some mild malts and some nice mild noble hops. I think this might be Saaz, but I am not sure.

Taste: Very subtle, mild taste here. I usually like more complex beers. This does only a few things, but it does them well. I think a bud drinker might be eased into craft brew with this one. Perfect for the style. Just the slightest bittering.

Edit: After a few more of these, I have realized that this is one of the most delicious pilsner-type lagers I have ever had. The taste is so flavorful for an American Pale Lager. This is one of my favorites from this brewery. They have made a great beer here.

Mouthfeel: The carbonation is just right for this beer, prickly without being overbearing. The finish is not long but pleasent, and not much aftertaste.

Drinkability: I could drink several of these easily. As I said above, you could bring these to any friends BBQ and easily outshine the BMC they might be drinking.

Clear golden colored beer with a thin white colored head.

Smells malty and a bit on the sweet side. Mild noble hop aroma mostly I get grass. Mildly floral and flowery smells quite tame.

Starts out tasting like beer, not as sweet as it smells. Biscuit malt with a slight hint of metal and a medium strong level of bitterness. Decent lager with an unusually high level of bitterness. Could pass for a Pils.

Mouthfeel is good.

Overall this is an OK lager. I have had better but they brew this stuff 1 mile from where I work. Will buy again.

a very standard yellow beer type lager, nothing unique at all, and honestly not a whole lot different from the blueski lager, save the pilsener malt. this has a similar color, yeast, and feel, perhaps a bit more body here, but a very familiar beer here. clear and well carbonated, it smells of american and european malt, a little sweet, a little bready, a little dusty. its all the lager yeast can apparently handle, as this is sweet in flavor too, with just a gentle hopping for bitterness, maybe a tad underdone. very drinkable, but a bomber has bored me half way though. only a true lager head would buy this more than once, because there just isnt that much to it, but i do like the tickle of euro pale malt for flavor and texture. nothing i really need to drink again, but its well enough made. one thing about epic coming to denver is that some of the sex appeal has worn off for me. their high end beer is still world class, but beer like this is proof that they put out some average stuff too.

Poured at a good temperature with a large, foamy, frothy, off-white head that slowly settled and good lacing. Color is a clear, dark gold with some tiny bubble trails. Aroma has, at first, a bare whiff of skunk, then malt, hop, fresh beer, minerals. Flavor's like nose, carbonic tang and malt sweet are in front with a quick smart bringing up the rear of bitter. Body and carbonation are good. Finish is like flavor, pleasant, and very drinkable. Too bad I only have this bomber. And no more access.

From a 22oz bomber to a pint glass, served at 35F and drank in the course of yard work on an 85F day.

Reminds me of the lagers from some of the larger breweries in Germany. Almost exactly like a Radeberger.

A - Buttery golden body, nice layer of head that dissipates quickly, lazy carbonation.

S - Biscuity with a little herbal tinge.

T - Decent enough, nothing special I care to relate.

M - Nice except for the funky aftertaste that most euro lagers seem to evoke if you drink enough of them. Too bad Epic couldnt splice that out...

A - bright yellow with a thin, white head that disappears quickly

S - bready, faint lemon

T - bready, cereal grains, lemony, kolsch-like

M - medium bodied, smooth, well carbonated

This is a nice, lighter, refreshing lager that has decent flavor and drinkability. This beer comes across like many Kolsches that I've had with a nice lemony, citrus note to accompany the malt presence. Overall, this is a nice beer. I'm not sure this is a beer that I would buy again, but I'm definitely glad I tried it once.

An adequate robust lager with a nice spangle of hops. Pours a golden amber in the tall wine glass with a winning head. Rich mouthfeel with sparkly carbonation on the tongue.

Plentiful aroma of flowery hops. A good hit of resins in the initial taste. Hops abound with a likable spiciness. A little sweetness to the abundant malt. Aftertaste is that resiny flavor with a fading bitterness.

Thoroughly drinkable and quite flavorful. From the 22 oz bottle bought at the Utah Liquor Store in Sugar House.

Pfeifferhorn is a mnildly hazy pale gold in color topped by a pure white head about a finger tall. It's frothy and pretty dense, and ultimately leaves some good, thick, patchy lacing from the very top of the glass predominantly that spreads some webbing as it goes.
The aroma offers the lightly sulfuric, herbal, grassy and crackery malts notes of a euro pale with a bit more strength and, seemingly, an addition of earthy and leafy hops.
The taste offers more of the same; this is like a stronger, somewhat deeper version of a modern European pale lager. In the flavor, a bit more green apple skin tartness comes out along with a very gentle spiciness. Otherwise it's got a nice balance between biscuit, light sweetness, grassiness, a bit of lemon, something slightly nutty, and fresh leafy and herbal hops.
The feel is something else entirely: it's good enough for any beer of a lighter style, but for a pale lager, especially a light one like this, it's as good as it gets. Crispness is absolutely perfect; any sway very slightly to less or more takes away. Combine that with just the right level of carbonation, semi-dryness that's not too dry, a "bold for a light lager" medium body, and a creamy, rolling smoothness, and you've got all the elements for a mouthfeel that no beer of this kind can rival.
While the big guys love replicating light lagers and dumb them down significantly, and craft brewers shy away from them for that association, kudos to Epic for going for it and making a fine version and one of the few of its kind that's well crafted.

Beer #65 in my great Utah Brew Hunt.

Thick malty sweet tone to this one. Kind of a mild biting acidic thing on the backend. Very thick, for a lager. Gets bitter as time goes on. Not really something I would go for, if I were prone to go for lagers - which I am not.
