Fest Devious Release #2 will be the first curve ball, as it will be a WET HOP Harvest Ale, made with freshly picked Columbus and Cascade hops from Tim at Salt Lake's High Desert Organic Hop Farm. Maris Otter and Briess premium malts at a 50:50 ratio along with and some Caramel 60 and Munich 20, for a nice malt and biscuit like flavor. Mild flavors combined with unique flavors of a Wet Hopping from Columbus and Cascade hops, interesting hop nose and late hop finish.

the Epic beer listings could easily get out of hand - entirely different beers under the same name, differentiated by release number, with specific info available only on the website

this version is a wet hop ale with Columbus and Cascade hops grown at SLC's own organic High Desert Hop Farm, note that this could tend towards the EPA side - or somewhere between, bomber picked up at the brewery store

a: piraat snifter, chunky eggshell head recedes to a thin ring atop a full copper colored ale

s: citrusy hops over a biscuit malt body with some moderate notes of caramel, munich adds a sweet leafiness that might be more expected in a marzen, grassy notes and dried citrus peel - pushing towards grapefruit but never very resinous or pungent, nicely hopped but not exactly screaming "fresh", balanced

m: moderately carbonated, body light-medium, smooth

t: starts early with biscuit and a sweetness lent from caramel and munich malts, leafy, citrus and grassy hop flavors run throughout - if a little less vivid than might be preferable, imparting a moderate bitterness in the finish with lingering malt sugars, malt and hop pretty equally matched here, a little on the sweet side for my preference

d: easy drinkability, nice shot at a wet hop ale from the new brewery

really enjoyed stopping by Epic, and it seems like they'll do good things for the SLC beer scene

Inflatablechair brought this over for the 1st in a round of impromptu tasting... Says Release #2... Poured into my Old Guardian goblet.

Edit: This brew should be in some sort of "fresh hop" category.. if not .. then it is at least an American Amber.

Yellowish tan head.... slightly hazed orange brew.. okay retention and slightly better lacing.

Aroma shows toasty malts with some floral hops with bits and pieces of citrus blooms.. there is an overall grassy element that makes me think "fresh hop".

Flavor is again the toasted malt presence with a decent hop bitter bite up front... nice maltiness.... but the hops are thoughtful.. a bit spicy/herbal mid palate... but the finish has an odd yet appreciated citrus bump.

body is a bit bigger than I was expecting.. nice smooth small bubble carbonation.

Thanks Sammy... Glad I had the chance to try this one pretty fresh.

I wouldn't say this is a beer thats true to its style "marzen", a bit more hoppy then most, but I liked that. Not much on the nose, but nice taste with stronger hop profile, yet balanced out by the malts. I surprisingly liked this beer more then I thought I would, have been kind of let down by some of Epic's other beers. This beer is nothing to write home about, but for a $5 bottle, its a nice pick.

This review is the 2012 release, which might be a different style from 2011.

22 ounce bottle from the brewery. Pours a cloudy copper color with a small white head. A sweet musty caramel malt and light hops. The flavor is smooth and calm; caramel, light bitter hops, fruit, easygoing. More of a English Pale Ale. A nice Autumn beer.

Pours a amber color, some carbonation, small off-white head, with some sticky lacing to follow. The nose is hoppy, malty, slight citrus notes, caramel. The taste is hoppy, malty, sweet, with some slight citrus notes. Medium body. Not Drinkable, alot of the Epic brews are the same, just different names. I've said this before and I'll say it again. Alot of the beers are nothing really special.
