Notes/Commercial Description:
This nostalgic porter evokes memories of chocolate and coffee around a campfire. The cherry wood smoked malt used in this beer gives it a heavy smokiness that blends smoothly into the chocolate malty body. With a silky finish this porter is ideal for sipping on a cold winters eve.

release #14 from the brewery

a: bomber into a reuben’s snifter, deep brown in color with a thin head

s: some thinned roasted malts, a touch of bitter cocoa, and a very mild smoke aroma

m: carbonation around moderate, prickly, with a light-medium body

t: same as the aroma - roasted malts thinned a bit, bitter cocoa, metallic grassy hops, and a subtle touch of smoke

o: a little boring for both a porter and a smoke beer, but nothing off at least

Poured into snifter glass. First time drinking a smoked porter in general.

Appearance: poured translucent black into the glass. An inch of off white-foam built up and dissipated quickly. Moderate lacings around the glass. Beer is black in color yet not jet black like an imperial stout.

Smell: a bit of burnt malt and floral sweetness. Just a touch of chocolate and maybe little bit of dark fruit.

Taste: starts out sweet. The subtle smoked offering comes midway through and finishes slightly burnt. The after taste is some sort of burnt sweetness...almost like burnt brown sugar. The smoked flavor is subtle, not a huge centerpiece. While this is my fist smoked porter and I have nothing to compare to, I really liked the smokiness that is not an overwhelming aspect of the beer. Definitely not like sitting around the campfire yet it is fantastic.

Mouthfeel: medium bodied and moderate carbonation. It's smooth and creamy.

Overall: it's a great bang for your buck. Costed less than five dollars and was very flavorful. Will definitely buy this again.

22 oz bottle poured into a nonic.
5.4% ABV, Release #22

A - Ruby-hued mahogany highlights shine through the dark brown beer that appears to be fairly clear despite it's dark nature. The tall plume of khaki foam that rises from the beer lasts quite some time, plateauing to a chunky pile while leaving ring after ring of lace on the glass.

S - Peaty hints and cigar ashtray pull through the "light" smelling beer's roasted malt profile that elaborates on dark chocolate, blackstrap molasses, and ground cocoa.

T - Robust malts abandon the roastiness that monopolizes the aroma for a far more subtle chocolaty flavor that develops a smooth and dry cocoa quality before the peat smoked maltiness finishes out with a perfect waft of campfire that's not too big.

M - The bold flavor of Epic's Smoked Porter does a great job of just staying in flavor - the beer is not at all as big as the taste. Light alcohol gives this beer more drinkability than one might expect while the malt lends a soft, medium body to the beer that finishes out with a lingering dry smoke presence.

O - A beautifully smoked porter, this dark beer has a robust taste that's not overly smoky and brings dark chocolate nuances to the beer nicely. Smooth and easily drinkable this balanced porter is one smoked beer that doesn't scream campfire or any variation of smokiness.

Dark brown colored beer with a medium sized light brown colored head.

Smells of bitter chocolate and patent malt with some smoke grain and a slight sour scent. Smoky and slightly milky.

Starts out Smoky and burnt with a strong patent malt presence and fairly dry, like smoked Guinness. Very mild sweetness and some chocolate it isn't quite bone dry. Bitterness is a little assertive.

Mouthfeel is good.

Overall a decent porter and quite User Friendly.

cool porter here, cherrywood smoked malt makes it subtle compared to some of the heavier ranch type darks out there. more brown than black in color by a long shot, more of a brown ale really, which is fine in a porter, and a just off white head an inch tall and lasting. nose is a little spicy like rye malt, cocoa powder, and meaty smoke like bacon. the flavor is less smoky than the nose, just enough to round it out, but its driven by sweeter grain with caramel and chocolate taking turns. a little fuzzy in feel, maybe some yeast left in this one, and rather filling for a lighter porter in color and alcohol. a satisfying winter or fall drink with a palate coating fullness and enough carbonation to wash almost clean. moderate hop profile too, primarily bitterness. an enjoyable beer from epic new to the denver market from what i understand.

As you'd expect, the porter pours a deep brown/black, with a cream colored head. Retention is very good, as is lacing.

There's a smoke aroma in the nose, also to be expected. There are also notes of toffee and coffee, with hints of chocolate and vanilla.

The taste starts with dark chocolate malts balanced nicely with the smoke flavor and some sweetness. There's a little hop bitterness in there, with some toffee as well. The smoke flavor is very well done, prevalent but not overwhelming.

This beer has a medium body, even though you might expect heavier. Coats well with good carbonation and with no overpowering tastes.

A solid beer, done really well. Plenty of enjoyable flavors interacting with none too overwhelming.
