Notes/Commercial Description:
This nostalgic porter evokes memories of chocolate and coffee around a campfire. The cherry wood smoked malt used in this beer gives it a heavy smokiness that blends smoothly into the chocolate malty body. With a silky finish this porter is ideal for sipping on a cold winters eve.

22oz brown bottle with a batch #.

LOOK: Tawny, brown, clear, healthy lacing

SMELL: Smoke, toffee, ash, coffee, carob powder, raisins

TASTE: Smoke, roasty bitterness, char, ash, burnt sugar, slightly creamy, toasted bread, faint caramel, dried plums, mild esters, semi-sweet smoked finish

Solid all around, nothing jumps out too aggressive which is completely fine. Balanced with a very well pronounce smoke character. It rivals many of the more well know Smoked Porters for sure.

Batch #4,5.6%ABV.Poured into an imperial nonic a somewhat muddled chesnut brown with a thin light tan colored head atop that left a little scum as it faded quickly. The smoke is light but negligible with some chocolate, roast, and nuttiness,a little alocohol imparted sweetness in there as well.Light smoke and earthy tones upfront on the palate, some brown sugar-like sweetness and chocolate malt comes into play late, the smoke makes another appearance in the finish.Somewhat subtle but its tasty,I would buy again. There are alot of Utah brews showing up in my local market.

Poured a massive head that dissipated slowly and left some lacy foam until the end. Dark as night and beautiful in the glass.

Smell was more subtle than expected given the appearance, like smoke, some malt, some dark nutty notes as well.

Taste actually had more body on first sip than expected, smoky, chocolate, hints of licorice and maybe a malty/coffee tinge. A hint of bitterness more than I expected, and very welcome. Offset the darker toasty taste to give some interesting character to the beer.

Taste is a bit thin, though, not lingering and not overwhelmingly satisfying but very drinkable.

Enjoyed on a nice cool evening around a fire and it seemed a very good companion for the environs.

22 oz. About medium brown pour, thin layer of whitish head.

Aroma, Solid malty, chocolate, peat and roast/smoked malt.

Taste, quite a bit of bready malt. Caramel, some toasted malt and smoke. Finishes with the smoked/burnt toffee.

Lighter than ideal, but the carbonation is fine. Pretty drinkable.

I'd say somewhere between a smoked brew and a porter. Another fairly interesting brew from Utah, though not as good as the Imperial Stout in this series.

A: Rustic brick coloring upon the exit from the bottle is standard black in the vessel accompanied by a bubbly, frothy khaki colored head that was slight in both size and retention.

S: Soft smoky charred scents. Was hoping for a bit more ummph here, but in the end average strength and perhaps sub-average complexity.

T: Nice charred sense. Wet minerality, a bitter chocolate roast, smoky wood, licorice with a finish of smoked dark fruit skins.

M: Lively and tingly carbonation factor with a decent depth body wise. Lingering smoky charred reminders.

O: Overall a decent level of dark roast with some smoky appeal. The flavor makes up for the lack luster visual and aromatic sense. Worthy first try. Hold on the repeats.

22 oz bottle poured into a nonic.
5.4% ABV, Release #22

A - Ruby-hued mahogany highlights shine through the dark brown beer that appears to be fairly clear despite it's dark nature. The tall plume of khaki foam that rises from the beer lasts quite some time, plateauing to a chunky pile while leaving ring after ring of lace on the glass.

S - Peaty hints and cigar ashtray pull through the "light" smelling beer's roasted malt profile that elaborates on dark chocolate, blackstrap molasses, and ground cocoa.

T - Robust malts abandon the roastiness that monopolizes the aroma for a far more subtle chocolaty flavor that develops a smooth and dry cocoa quality before the peat smoked maltiness finishes out with a perfect waft of campfire that's not too big.

M - The bold flavor of Epic's Smoked Porter does a great job of just staying in flavor - the beer is not at all as big as the taste. Light alcohol gives this beer more drinkability than one might expect while the malt lends a soft, medium body to the beer that finishes out with a lingering dry smoke presence.

O - A beautifully smoked porter, this dark beer has a robust taste that's not overly smoky and brings dark chocolate nuances to the beer nicely. Smooth and easily drinkable this balanced porter is one smoked beer that doesn't scream campfire or any variation of smokiness.

Pours a dark brown color with a light khaki head of about a finger or so. Left nice lacing, but not at all porter dark. Pleasantly smoky and roasted aroma with equal chocolaty bits. Pretty much spot on with the aroma: nice smoky notes, roast, slight char and chocolate. Nice creaminess, medium bodied.

In the end, nothing spectacular, but it's a solid, above average smoked porter.

big thanks to mnbearsfan for BIF'n me this one! finally getting around to it!

pours an interestingly chestnutty brown with honey colored highlights and a deep richness to it. a thick two-finger tan head fades relatively quickly but leaves some decent lace.

smells like a smoked beer. rich dark malt, earthy. a hefty dose of smoke. alder and peat with a touch of salt. smells promising.

taste follows the promises made by the aroma... rich, dark malts and a hefty dose of smoke. campfire, salted caramel. some hops in the finish to balance it all out. a bit lighter than many porters, but still delicious.

mouth is smooth with ample carbonation that cuts through the smoke nicely. In my mind, I was wanting a bit more body, but after a few minutes with this one, I realize it actually works pretty well.

I'm a sucker for smoked beers... and this one really delivers. not as in your face as some, but way more smoke character than most "smoked" beers. a touch lighter than I'd expected for a porter, but it really works beautifully. comes across as a well-done, well-rounded, highly balanced porter. maybe the best smoked porter I've had? I'd kill for another one.

release #14 from the brewery

a: bomber into a reuben’s snifter, deep brown in color with a thin head

s: some thinned roasted malts, a touch of bitter cocoa, and a very mild smoke aroma

m: carbonation around moderate, prickly, with a light-medium body

t: same as the aroma - roasted malts thinned a bit, bitter cocoa, metallic grassy hops, and a subtle touch of smoke

o: a little boring for both a porter and a smoke beer, but nothing off at least
