Notes & Commercial Description:
Beer added by: bishopgary on 12-06-2010

This nostalgic porter evokes memories of chocolate and coffee around a campfire. The cherry wood smoked malt used in this beer gives it a heavy smokiness that blends smoothly into the chocolate malty body. With a silky finish this porter is ideal for sipping on a cold winters eve.

Pours a dark brown color, some carbonation, small fizzy off-white head, with minimal sticky lacing left behind. The nose is malty, with a slight chocolate/coffee note, not much of a smoked presence at all. The taste is malty, kinda sweet, some smokyness, chocolate/coffee notes. Medium body. Drinkable, another Epic brew.

Release #11. 6.3% ABV according to my botle. "One of only 1800 bottles released." 1 pint 6 fl oz brown glass bottle with standard silver branded pressure cap and basic label served into a conical Samuel Smith's pint glass in me gaff in low altitude Los Feliz, Los Angeles, California. Reviewed live. Acquired at the Total Wine in Redondo Beach. Expectations are above average given the brewery; I loved Big Bad Baptist but their other offerings have been disappointing so far. I do like a good smoked porter - Alaskan's in particular. Exponential series.

Served cold, straight from the fridge, and allowed to warm over the course of consumption. Side-poured with standard vigor as no carbonation issues are anticipated.

A: Pours a two finger khaki colour head of nice cream and thickness, and pretty good (4+ minute) retention for the above average ABV. Body colour is a nontransparent dark brown-black; opaque. No yeast particles are visible. No bubble show. Light thin lacing as the head recedes.

Sm: Light smoke/rauchbier character. Raisin on the back end. Dark malts. Maybe caramel. Burnt bread. A bit of fruit; more of that raisin with some faint grape. The smoke is surprisingly timid, actually - not quite dominating. Maybe there's more balance here than I expected. I'm look forward to finding out. No yeast or alcohol is detectable. An average strength aroma.

T: Light timid smoky character over a simple - darisay bland - dark malt foundation. Bits of chocolate and caramel malt, but not enough to really evoke their respective flavours. A bit creamy up front. Raisin enters in the second act, adding a much needed second dimension to the beer. Balance is okay - unremarkable considering how little is going on here. Simple, bland, boring, and timid for a smoked porter - though it's not bad. I'm underwelmed, but I like it in a general sense. The smoke is horribly deep.

Mf: Smooth and wet. Adequate body. Overcarbonated. Okay presence on the plalate. Suits the flavour profile in a general sense, but there's nothing unique or special about the execution.

Dr: A passable Smoked Porter that will quickly be forgotten. I see no need to trifle with this again. Pretty pedestrian stuff, and badly priced at that. I'll continue to go with Alaskan for all my smoked porter needs. Epic can do better. Hides its ABV decently. Very average for the style.

I will say that I'd guess they held back on the smoky character to try to lend it more mainstream appeal, but it just resulted in a bland porter.

High C
