Notes/Commercial Description:
This nostalgic porter evokes memories of chocolate and coffee around a campfire. The cherry wood smoked malt used in this beer gives it a heavy smokiness that blends smoothly into the chocolate malty body. With a silky finish this porter is ideal for sipping on a cold winters eve.

Release #2 according to the label.

A deep and dark, almost solid amber brown color. The head is about a finger thick and tan in color and leaves some generous lacing.

Getting quite a bit of cola on the nose with a nearly identical amount of smoked malt. Not a real strong smell overall, but the smoke is very nice.

I'm a sucker for smoked beers and this one delivers. Smoked malt up front with some roasty and toasty malts as well. A light bit of sweetness with a touch of cola present as well. A kiss of bacon goodness at the end and into the aftertaste. Very flavorful, but not overwhelming at all.

Lots of soft and fluffy carbonation to fill the mouth. Smooth with a very dry finish. Nice feel overall.

I'm going to bump up the overall here just because this drinks so easily. This is a really well rounded brew that highlights the smoked malt, but is not off-putting in doing so. Some smoked beers can be over the top, some not enough. I think this finds a very nice middle ground and just delivers as a very solid beer overall.

Bomber from the cold cases @ Epic poured into a standard pint glass.

Appearance: Long lasting sticky white head leaves thick lacing on my glass. This porter is lighter in color than some others, or maybe the others are too dark. Hold it up to the light and it is a clear dark red or brown.

Smell: Smoky malts with just a bit of earthy malts coming through.

Taste: Smoke dominates but is not overpowering. At the end of the taste, I sense some hops bitterness. Very flavorful but not too complex. The smell is a bit sweet, but the taste is somewhat dry.

Mouthfeel: This is one of Epic's thinner beers. The flavor still coats the mouth nicely and the carbonation is a bit low.

Overall: I will get more of these, I like it quite a bit. For Epic beers, that are fairly pricey, this is one of their better priced offerings. Except for the Smoked and Oaked, I cannot think of another smoked beer brewed in Utah.

22 ounce bottle into signature pint glass; release 11, bottled 2/19/2012. Pours slightly hazy deep reddish brown color with a 1-2 finger dense light tan head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass. Aromas of chocolate, cocoa, roasted malt, toast, caramel, smoke, light char, light coffee, raisin, and roasted earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of roasted malt notes with moderate smoke; and decent strength. Taste of chocolate, cocoa, roasted malt, toast, smoke, caramel, light coffee, and light fruitiness. Light roasted bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of chocolate, cocoa, roasted malt, smoke, caramel, toast, and light coffee on the finish for a bit. Very nice balance of roasted malt and smoke flavors with good complexity; and no cloying flavors present after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a fairly creamy and smooth mouthfeel that is good. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a very nice smoked porter style. Good complexity and balance of roasted flavors with smoke; and very smooth to drink. A very enjoyable offering.

Batch #4,5.6%ABV.Poured into an imperial nonic a somewhat muddled chesnut brown with a thin light tan colored head atop that left a little scum as it faded quickly. The smoke is light but negligible with some chocolate, roast, and nuttiness,a little alocohol imparted sweetness in there as well.Light smoke and earthy tones upfront on the palate, some brown sugar-like sweetness and chocolate malt comes into play late, the smoke makes another appearance in the finish.Somewhat subtle but its tasty,I would buy again. There are alot of Utah brews showing up in my local market.

A: dark brown body with a roasted brown head. retention isnt great. neither is the lacing.

S: rich chocolate and burnt grain mixes with a subtle, yet present smokey aroma.

T: good amount of char mixes with a flavorfull roasted body. the finish is really where the smoke comes into play. intense, but tasty.

M: a little bit light on the carbonation, but it lets the smoke be more of a key player. medium body.

D: nice to have a brew with this much smokey flavor at a lower ABV. tasty.

Poured a massive head that dissipated slowly and left some lacy foam until the end. Dark as night and beautiful in the glass.

Smell was more subtle than expected given the appearance, like smoke, some malt, some dark nutty notes as well.

Taste actually had more body on first sip than expected, smoky, chocolate, hints of licorice and maybe a malty/coffee tinge. A hint of bitterness more than I expected, and very welcome. Offset the darker toasty taste to give some interesting character to the beer.

Taste is a bit thin, though, not lingering and not overwhelmingly satisfying but very drinkable.

Enjoyed on a nice cool evening around a fire and it seemed a very good companion for the environs.

Release # 10.

Pours an opaque dark brown with a 1 inch foamy khaki head that settles to a film on top of the beer. A foamy curtain of lace forms on the glass on the drink down. Smell is of toasted malt and some slight smoke aromas. Taste is of roasted malt, slight smoke, and some coffee bean flavors. There is a medium roasty bitterness that sticks to the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer but the smoke aromas and flavors are somewhat subtle.

I like this lower-octane style with a little less intensity. A nice smokiness that doesn't dominate, a malty richness, and a reasonable alcohol level.

Aromas of smoked sausage with a whiff of the campfire. Rather tart along with the malty sweetness. Some bitterness comes along with the earthy hop flavors. Smoke has the last word. The combination of tartness and fruitiness is quite nice. Light body and quite drinkable.

22 oz bottle from the Utah Liquor store in Sugar House, which has a decent selection of Epics.

cool porter here, cherrywood smoked malt makes it subtle compared to some of the heavier ranch type darks out there. more brown than black in color by a long shot, more of a brown ale really, which is fine in a porter, and a just off white head an inch tall and lasting. nose is a little spicy like rye malt, cocoa powder, and meaty smoke like bacon. the flavor is less smoky than the nose, just enough to round it out, but its driven by sweeter grain with caramel and chocolate taking turns. a little fuzzy in feel, maybe some yeast left in this one, and rather filling for a lighter porter in color and alcohol. a satisfying winter or fall drink with a palate coating fullness and enough carbonation to wash almost clean. moderate hop profile too, primarily bitterness. an enjoyable beer from epic new to the denver market from what i understand.

22 oz. About medium brown pour, thin layer of whitish head.

Aroma, Solid malty, chocolate, peat and roast/smoked malt.

Taste, quite a bit of bready malt. Caramel, some toasted malt and smoke. Finishes with the smoked/burnt toffee.

Lighter than ideal, but the carbonation is fine. Pretty drinkable.

I'd say somewhere between a smoked brew and a porter. Another fairly interesting brew from Utah, though not as good as the Imperial Stout in this series.

Pours a dark chestnut brown color with mahogany edges and a 1.5 finger light beige head that slowly settles into a lasting ring. Streaks of soapy lacing left behind.

Smoked malt aroma with hints of charcoal, BBQ, bacon and ash along with sweeter malt notes underneath. Subtle toasted caramel malt with some dark chocolate and oatmeal. Decently smokey but not over the top.

On the fuller end of medium bodied with a good balance of smokey and sweet malts along with a slight spicy hop presence. Smokey up front with hints of charred wood, BBQ, bacon and charcoal quickly countered by sweeter toasted malt notes. Some bitter dark chocolate and oatmeal that lingers into a bitter dry finish. Nicely balanced but this balance makes the beer tame and not as smokey as I prefer. Good but not the smoke bomb that I had hoped for. A nice intro to the style.
