Notes/Commercial Description:
This massive Stout pours a mahogany black with a thick, brown head. The aroma is all chocolate roasted malt. The aroma is all chocolate and toasted malt. The first wave of flavor embraces anise and dark, bitter chocolate but opens up to include coffee, smoke and rich sweet malt.

I am pretty sure I picked this bottle up from the brewery on small business saturday, thanks American Express! This is from batch 10, clocks in at 11.1%, and was bottled on Nov 20, 2012. Three months old. Poured into my CCB snifter.

Appearance: Pours out nice and viscous, extremely black, with a nice deep tan head that rose to one finger before settling to a foam. Lacing all over the glass.

Smell: I get a sense of coffee and roast, with a bit of char. A touch of cocoa as well. Little sweetness, much stronger bitterness, maybe a bit of the Chinook.

Taste: This is what I look for in an RIS. Deep flavors, coffee and cocoa, with a very strong roasted backbone. Any residual sweetness is quickly covered up by bitter roast and some hops. A bit of fruit but that, too, is muted. Even at this young age, the alcohol is pretty well masked.

Mouthfeel: Thick, without being a wet blanket. Carbonation is spot on. Huge flavors easily cover taste buds.

Overall: I am glad this one is available here. Maybe a bit expensive at 8 a bomber, only Old Raspy beats it in value to cost ratio of the RISs that I have had. I would be curious to try a two and half year old bottle of this. I may sound like a homer, but this one is quite nice.

2014 Release, 10.6% ABV

Appearance: Pours with a dark brown color yet sits black in the glass. Half a finger of bubbly dark brown head. Random sticky lacing left behind at each level.

Smell: Bitter dark chocolate and oats pop up on the front. Solid hop body with pleasant accents of black licorice, moss, oats, lactose, and sweet malt. Overall the aroma is definitely on the sweeter side, but is done very well.

Taste: Sweet malt, lactose, and black licorice hit the palate first. Balanced hop tones pick up in the body and gradually transition into some heavier roasted malt tones with accents of coffee grounds, toffee, dark chocolate, and caramel. The finish is a lingering mossy hop flavor, caramel, lactose, and taffy.

Mouthfeel: Awesome transitions from sweet to roasted, back to sweet. Robust full body. Carbonation is well done for even such a young stout.

Overall: This is some seriously great stuff. I cannot wait to try the big baptist which I picked up at the same time. Really impressed how well this drank fresh, have no hesitations to drink this brew ASAP. Reminds me a ton of Founder's RIS.

In review, a 2013 bottle.

A - Pours dark, midnight black color with a thick mocha colored lacing ring and moderately viscous when the glass is swirled. Nice legs.

S - Mocha, light char, mocha cream, burnt chocolate.

T - Dark fruit, mocha, burnt chocolate, alcohol.

M - Heavy medium body, sticky on the lips, coats the mouth with ark fruit and burnt chocolate.

O - A solid Imperial Stout, have really enjoyed the Exponential Series from Epic.

A bomber on a snowy day. 1 of only 1800 bottles. Poured into a chalice.

A good beer but a bit too hot in the finish. Barrel-aged qualities without the aging or the barrels. 4.25

A – Pours an opaque dark brown to black with reddish tints, a thin brown head that dissipates quickly, a little viscous, nice brown lacing. 4.25

S – Roasted malts, some alcohol/whiskey, a bit of tobacco, prunes (?). 4

T – Roasted malt, dark chocolate, slightly sweet, but also some minor metallic taste (-). 4

MF – Medium-heavy body, SMOOTH and creamy, semi-dry finish with alcohol heat and slickness at the very end. A great mouth feel! 4.5
