American Double / Imperial Stout |  9.10% ABV

Availability: Rotating

Notes/Commercial Description:
This massive Stout pours a mahogany black with a thick, brown head. The aroma is all chocolate roasted malt. The aroma is all chocolate and toasted malt. The first wave of flavor embraces anise and dark, bitter chocolate but opens up to include coffee, smoke and rich sweet malt.

22oz bomber purchased at Enoteca in Post Falls, Idaho for $8.99. This beer, part of Epic’s “Exponential Series,” is my first from Utah. While there’s no obvious best by date, the label is stamped “Release # 5,” along with the information that the beer is 8.9 % abv.

Poured a super dark brown that might as well have been black, as no light seemed able to pass through it. Good-sized mocha colored head that took it’s time dropping, leaving lots of lace on the sides of a Boundary Bay pint glass.

The nose was initially made up of a coffeeish bitterness. As it warmed, sweeter elements similar to brown sugar came into play. Deep in the background there also seemed to be a boozy alcohol scent.

Nowhere near as bitter as I was expecting, flavor wise. More than anything else, this tastes like a boozy brown ale. Things start off with a nearly equally matched dry hop zap and blast of brown sugar. Then, things…don’t really change at all except for a warming alcohol presence. No complexity at all to this Impy Stout, just strong hop and malt blasts at the beginning followed by booze.

Fairly full-bodied, as I expected given the style. Relatively creamy mouthfeel.

A fairly one-dimensional Imperial Stout. Certainly it’s drinkable, but I’ve had so many better examples of the style, of which quite a few were cheaper than this. I’m glad to know they can make boozy beers in Utah, but that’s the extent of what I take away from this beer.

Poured from the bottle into a snifter glass. Release #16, SLC #1265.

A real nice mocha brown one finger and a half tall head. Even bubbled quite creamy and slowly settles nicely. Real nice dark color to the head and giving a thick collar. Body is classic opaque dark walnut black. A little tilt under the collar shows some clarity with a hint of red hue. Leopard and speckled lacing hit while drinking. Great looking stout.

Interesting solid nose. Nice soft roasted malts, hints a little at chocolate but more to coffee. Great fruit subdued component to this, almost grape sweetness. A faint whiff of smokehouse cedar and wood embers comes out just on the end. Like this faint smoke in there too. Lots going on here quite nice, very balanced, but the roast grains dominate.

Palate delivers real nicely. Nearly silky texture, soft and giving to great roast coffee and chocolate feel. Bittering palate slightly, comes off with a hint of tobacco warmth and char. A real nice piping finish and controlled heat of hop and roast. Nothing boozy about this beer whatsoever. Warm espresso, chocolatey feel, bitter controlled finish almost lime juice to match. Fruit sweetness is pretty much non existent though than what the nose indicates.

Overall this is a real constructed brew, and a great beer to quaff.

Black colored beer with a brown colored head.

Smells sweet and of chocolate and toasted grain. Scent of Kahlua and And some fruity scents on the the ethanol. Scent of chocolate liquor can't quite ID the fruit but it is close to pear. Faint coffee as it warms but this smells mostly of chocolate.

Starts out sweet with a bittersweet chocolate flavor. Warms the chest quite well. Little bit of a patent malt bite to it. Very much a chocolate beer, that really sums it up. Lots of charred malt flavor.

Mouthfeel is full.

Overall a big chocolate beer.

Pours out dark as a stout can be with a two finger brown head with decent retention. Seems to have decent lacing. Smell is dark fruits like raisins with some burnt malt and a decent amount of sweetness that I assume is coming from the malts. Taste is definitely some burnt malts and plenty of dark fruit with a slight sweet taste that seems to hang in the throat. The mouthfell is quite thick which is nice for the style which is one of the better attributes of the beer. This beer seems to be pretty one dimensional and not tons going on here. It's not a bad Imperial stout but it just doesn't have much going on. No chocolate to be found and I assume they use cheap ingredients like in most of their beers... Overall this is an OK stout with a little hops that come out in the end and hangs a little in the throat, It's not a bad beer but it's just not really that good either. I certainly would drink it again but it wouldn't be a first choice if I was suggesting a strong stout to someone, Not good and not bad. Just no better than average.
