Notes/Commercial Description:
Think freshly baked rye bread in a bottle with just a hint of lemon and spices from the hops and yeast. Both wheat-y and spicy with a light silky texture.

22oz brown bottle with a batch # on the label:

LOOK: Clear brassy hue, excellent lacing

SMELL: Bread, spicy rye, treacle, taffy, plums, broth, herbal, yeast

TASTE: Extremely smooth, creamy, medium body, spicy rye, toasted bread, modest hopping, sorghum, earthy, vague citrus, peppery, faint alcohol, semi-dry finish

A malt bomb that has more than enough rye in it to make its mark on the palate. Very well balanced and still pretty quaffable. Sometimes simple is better.

Release #6,5.2% ABV per bottle label.Poured into an imperial pint glass murky bronze with anice tight formed 1/2 finger white head atop that clung well to the glass.Aromas are really muted with just a faint shot of sharp rye, really other than that nothing.A nice meary creamy mouthfeel makes for a rich feeling if not flavored beer.Light citrusy hops along with light lactic rye flavors, again light is the main word used here, faint toasty grain rounds out an uninspring palate. This beer has things going on for it but the aromas and flavors just dont pack any punch in my opinion.

Release 4, bottle lists 5.5% ABV

A - Pours a hazy, almost murky, burnt orange with one finger of off-white head. Head doesn't last too long, but leaves decent lacing.

S - Aroma is relatively subtle, but contains a nice amount of spicy rye, toasted malt and a hint of citrus. Enjoyable smell.

T - More citrus in the taste than the aroma, along with toasted bread malt, crisp rye and maybe a touch of caramel malt. This is well balanced and very tasty.

M - Medium mouthfeel with crisp rye and hop bitterness.

O - This is a really solid brew all around. Nice balance of malt, hops and rye, with nothing really dominating.

The color is a brown-hued dark orange, essentially bronze. This beer has a creamy light tan head , dense and tightly bubbled. It's a full finger tall and falls slowly, but never very far. There's a thick pillow resting on top the entire way, and creamy, clumpy lacing is left in plenty well down the glass.
The smell is pretty unusual to begin with. considering how well that translates to the flavor, it's a little unusual in general. I get the rye, with the peppery bite and the earthiness. I also get fruits, not quite estery, with some herbal notes and a little bit of chalkiness. I think it might be the yeast, and I don't know if that's typical, but it's what's going on here. The herbal note might be from the very light hops, which also impart a little floral bitterness.
The mouthfeel is good, imparting both crispness and creaminess in a body that's medium or close to it. It also takes on a bit of dryness and an interesting minerality.

A - dark amber with a thin lacing of off white head that quickly fizzles away

S - faint bread and citrus

T - apples, faint bread, faint citrus, faint pepper

M - crisp, medium bodied

I bought this in the discount section at Bestway in Greensboro so it may have been a bit dated. The rye was not very pronounced. The flavor wanted to be complex, but it each element was rather faint. I'll pass next time.

Date tasted: 5/28/13
Brewery: Epic Brewing Company Salt Lake City, UT
Beer: Rio's Rompin' Rye Beer
Served from: 22oz bottle
Bottled on/born on date: “Release #21”

Appearance: Amber color, cloudy with a slightly off white head. Good head retention

Smell: Hops and a hint of malt

Taste: Starts smooth, finishes with a nice bite of rye spiciness. Lingering hop bitterness in the after taste.

Mouthfeel: smooth, with a bit of bite at the end

Overall: A drinkable beer, but could use a little bit more rye especially given the “rompin'” in the name. The beer is decent, but could use a little something more.

1 pint 6oz bottle
Served in a perfect pint glass

A - It has an amber to deep amber body with three inches of tan head.

S - It smells like a loaf of marble rye on the end of a fishing pole (Seinfeld reference).

T - I taste all malt, but it is not too sweet. The rye does a decent job of balancing it out.

M - Thin to moderate

O - When I think of rye beers I guess I think of rye IPA's. This is not an IPA. It is a solid beer and a steal for the price, $3.99.

bomber purchased at the brewery

a: into an avery snifter, the pour produces a finger deep, frothy head of khaki colored carbonation, receding to a complete layer and ring around the glass and spotty lace, good retention, conditioning yeast spilling from the neck of the bottle, the beer itself a hazed, medium maple-amber in color

s: nose heavy on the rye, with a pleasant sweet/spicy character, lots of bread, some toasted and nutty caramel, hops earthy and grassy, a solid yeast aroma, fruity esters with notes of apple, grape and a touch of green banana, I like it

m: carbonation low-moderate, smooth and creamy on the tongue at first, with a lighter medium body that finishes a little watery

t: opens with a big hit of spicy rye on a backing of bready pale malts, nutty and toasted grains, quite dry from the midpoint with some very metallic (especially when cold) hop flavors growing towards the finish, moderately bittered with lingering flavors of grain and metal

o: the nicely done aroma sets up the slightly less moving flavor experience, which lacked the depth of the aroma where the unpleasantly metallic hops take over midway, not a bad beer but could use a little reworking in parts

Heavy chill hazed red colored beer with a medium sized tan colored head.

Smells strongly of rye and very spicy. Spicy and faintly sour there is a substantial earthy rye aroma. Sweet malt with a strong caramel scent. Faint cookie dough scent.

Starts out a little sweet a spicy with a big rye flavor. Slightly earth rye taste the after taste is the sweet part. Slight mushroom taste. Bitterness level is low.

Mouthfeel is good.

Overall a tasty rte beer for sure, a recommended beer.

Pours a very hazy orange color, with some floaters, and a small head. Not very appealing to look at.

Aromas are bready, spicy, and doughy with some earthy tea like hops.

Tastes like an amber ale. Light tea, spices, and creamy caramel malt sweetness. Finish is earthy, crisp, and dry, slightly bitter as well.

Mouthfeel is crisp, with nice body, not heavy.

Overall, this beer redeemed itself after the bad pour. But still, kind of a middle of the road offering.
