Think freshly baked rye bread in a bottle with just a hint of lemon and spices from the hops and yeast. Both wheat-y and spicy with a light silky texture.

Appearance has a hazy dark amber brown color supporting a fair dissipating head leaving spotty lace. Smell of mainly the rye, citrus with light malt, citrus and hop in the back. Taste is of bitter rye, sweet malt with a balance of hops. mouthfeel is medium with good carbonation. Overall a fair rye.

Bomber from the cold cases of Epic, release 1 (brewed Feb 24, 2011) poured into s standard pint glass.

Appearance: A vibrant golden with a slight haze. This beer had a longish lasting pillow of a head that left clumpy lacing down my glass.

Smell: Almost nutty with a very mild yeastiness. I also sense some earthy hoppiness. I only smell a little of the rye bread smell.

Taste: The rye flavor comes out a little more. Still pretty reserved. The malt bill is pretty complex and I get a sense of that complexity, my palate is just not good enough to describe it yet.

Mouthfeel: This beer has a solid mouthfeel. The beer seems to be partially filtered of the yeast. The combination of the malty taste with the presence of the yeast and solid, but not assertive carbonation, is really nice. Finish is not particularly long, as you might expect.

Overall: This is a solid beer. Like the Pfeifferhorn Lager, it is a really tasty brew that will not standout only because it has a lower ABV. It is well worth picking up.

To me this was a classic example of a beer that tries far too hard and accomplishes far too little. For a rye base, the rye was remarkably faint which was not welcoming whatsoever. If I buy a rye beer, I intend to appreciate the complexities in the rye, but with this flavoring it was simply not possible. The intentionally numbing of the rye was intended to sharpen up the palate so it could appreciate both the citrus and earthy bready components. The other flavors however do not mix well with each other creating very separate unpleasant flavors. I was unimpressed here and will skip it next time.

Date tasted: 5/28/13
Brewery: Epic Brewing Company Salt Lake City, UT
Beer: Rio's Rompin' Rye Beer
Served from: 22oz bottle
Bottled on/born on date: “Release #21”

Appearance: Amber color, cloudy with a slightly off white head. Good head retention

Smell: Hops and a hint of malt

Taste: Starts smooth, finishes with a nice bite of rye spiciness. Lingering hop bitterness in the after taste.

Mouthfeel: smooth, with a bit of bite at the end

Overall: A drinkable beer, but could use a little bit more rye especially given the “rompin'” in the name. The beer is decent, but could use a little something more.

A: A touch hazy with a nice bronze color. Could use a little more carbonation.

S: You can smell the Rye, a bit yeasty and very pleasant.

T: I really love the taste of this beer, smooth and subtle. The flavor matches the smell, but with a very slight citrus and spice element. With the low bitterness, it is very much like bread.

M: Smooth and perfectly good.

Overall: I've made this a standard session beer for me. It could use a bit more spicy rye character and just a slight bit more carbonation, but others may disagree. I think this beer is a total success for a session beer.
