The first sip of this brilliant, red-brown beer reveals a robust mouth feel and complex flavors including raisin, dark bread, some sherry flavors sure to increase with age. With the finish comes the flavor of Columbus hops followed by the alcohol warmth that can be felt down your throat.

Release #1

Appearance: Medium Amber with a very thing head.
Smell: EXTREME. From smelling the bottle after opening to the glass after pouring, this barley wine screams HOPS! Very pleasant suprise!
Taste is semi caramelly with a favorable hop flavor with a tame ending.
Mouthfeel: Almost as light pucker of vinegar with a very nice effervescence.
Overall: An impressive almost "west coast" interpretation of a hoppy barley wine, a must try!

Barley wine bottle share on 1/31, batch #14. More hoppy than other barley wines, not necessarily a bad thing. Lots of barley sweetness, ruby brown pour, some sticky lacing. A little flat on the finish, but really really good overall.

22oz bottle, purchased from Epic for $8.99

Release #24, whatever that means

Poured at fridge temp into a tulip glass

Pours a very turbid dark toffee brown with lots of suspended white chunks and a tall sandy colored head. 3.75

Deep and sweet malts, some raisin, plum and dark fermented stone fruit. Fruity caramel. 4.25

Thick nearly syrupy body, some alcohol warmth, only on the tongue and slightly in the belly. Strong residual malt and fruitcake aftertaste. 4.25

Taste follows. Fruity caramel, fruit/(sherry)cake, lightly toasted toffee and boozy heat. 4.25

Overall outside of appearance (seemed weird to me) this was an excellent drinking (not sipping) Barleywine 4.25

Foggy amber-brown with a fairly fluid surface after its sparse stretch mark film stealthily fades away.

A hoppy, piney, fiery bitterness and heat meets orange lozenge and Werther's butterscotch in this intense American barleywine.

Exclamation point.

End of summer 2015 on this one.

Pours a dark amber color with some dark red almost leaning into light brown territory. Aroma leans into the hops, then caramel. Hops are of the American classic C hop variety, mostly bitterness, but a little bit of woodiness too. Oh hey, its CTZ, I didn't expect that. Didn't get any weed note out of it even though CTZ, I guess Utah was all like "no mj aroma" or something.

Taste, by law, you must mention caramel or toffee in a barleywine review. This is caramel. Brandy meets unsweetened citrus like bitterness and sensation. Hints of brown sugar and sherry in the mouthfeel. Hides the alcohol ok, not a world class job, but respectable. Little bit of a bitter dark fruit note as it warms that I could do without. Go screw with a quad if you wanna pull that shit. Thankfully the sticky pine sap and caramel note reigns supreme. Its definitely more in the vein of Bigfoot with its aggressive hopping.

Bottle to goblet. Not sure of the age. Got it in a bottle shop in Ventnor, NJ (near AC) that had a lot of aged barleywines on the shelf (i picked up a 2011 Schlafly Barleywine in March 2018). Best guess is that this is about 3 years old.

LOOK: Hazy brown; medium off white head.
AROMA: bread; apple; grape, barley. Brown sugar.
TASTE: MORE bread; apple; grape, barley. Brown sugar. touches of mold and brandy in the finish.
FEEL: thick; apple-cider like, full body. decent carbonation.

Very Tasty. A very good barleywine.

The appearance had a light somewhat clear brown color. bar pour leads to a half finger white foamy head, adequate light foamy lacing. The smell had a llight caramel maltiness leading into an inviting raisinous and also bitter citrusy hoppiness. The taste was bitter and sweet at different times through the caramel malts and raisins to mix with the bitter citrusy hops. not much of an aftertaste, in fact I really don’t get anything, sweet dry finish. On the palate, it sat at/about a medium on the palate. not really sessionable, but its a barleywine so whaddaya expect. The carbonation is good for the style and for me. Overall, this was a good barleywine that I would have again, slightly hoppier than some so that makes me think its an American one.

Really impressed with this beer. Though it tastes more English than American despite its claim (the hop presence here is minimal), that's a positive for me. Really nails the dark fruit and toffee notes well. Supremely drinkable - avoids the over-sweetness of so many barleywines.

Look: It pours a hazy, cloudy brown with a tan moderate head.

Smell: It has rich malt aromas highlighted by caramel and bread. There is a strong presence of raisin as well.

Taste: The flavors are characteristic of the malt with caramel and bread and a moderate wood taste. There is a bit of smoke with raisin and low sherry elements.

Feel: It has a chewy, full bodied feel with a fair amount of alcohol warmth.

Overall, this is a malt forward barley wine with the added complexity of the wood with enhances the overall presentation.

Great barley wine components but much more hop bitterness than I like. Underneath the hops is a grainy barley malt, molasses, caramel, brown sugar and pecan nuttiness. The hops are bitter and slightly metallic which transfers to the feel.
