TASTE: Thick, syrupy, smooth, bitter char, wood, booze, espresso, cocoa powder, faint vanilla

This beer is a beast! Usually you don't see such grace and balance with bigger Stouts. From roasted, wood, booze and sweetness, it all comes together. Seriously, this one gives some of the more hyped Imperial Stouts something to think about. A true ticker, beer geek, hunter or whatever, should be seeking this brew out.

A: The beer is absolutely jet black in color. It poured with a two finger high dark tan head that died down a bit and left a thin layer of bubbles covering the surface and a small collar around the edge of the glass.
S: There are moderately strong aromas of coffee beans n the nose along with some hints of roasted malts.
T: The taste shares some similarities with the smell in terms of flavors of coffee beans and also has notes of whiskey and hints of roasted malts The roasted toffee beans linger throuh the finish and overall become stronger as the beers wrms up.
M: It feels medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: For a beer of this strength, the alcohol is well hidden from the taste.

Received this as an extra in trade with BA BrettHead. Enjoyed out of a 22 oz brown bomber with a production date of October 2013. Poured into an oversized 33 oz snifter.

Appearance (4.0) - Pours a rich, dark brown that pretty much comes across as black. Holding it up to the light reveals some shades of charred wood brown, but it's not very capable of letting light through at all. Atop the body sits a half to three-quarters finger of mocha colored foam that provides a blanket of head with just a few places where a larger bubble has burst, revealing the dark liquid beneath. Retention is moderate and before long, that blanket has turned into an intermittently dispersed film. Lacing is almost nonexistent, save for a few speckles on the sides of the glass as I drink it down.

Smell (4.0) - I'm a bit surprised at how well the coffee continues to power through 10 months later. I've never had this fresh, so I don't know how aggressive it is normally, but to me, there is just a really nice amount of the roasty brew infused into this beer. French roast and bittersweet chocolate interplay up front, and there is a hint of oak and whiskey hidden behind the pleasant bitterness from the coffee/cacao.

Taste (4.0) - Here, the coffee seems to have succumbed to the extended time period, but what's left is a nice roasted highlight to the roasted grains and malts contained therein. At this point, it hits the palate with the essence of coffee, rather than being a straight-up assault of arabica. This allows the bittersweet and chocolatey goodness of the nibs to shine, providing a nice sweet counterpoint to the more astringent elements of the barrel, with notes of whiskey, vanilla and wood.

Mouthfeel (3.75) - Medium-to-full bodied, with moderate-to-low carbonation. It's a bit thin, but not unpleasantly so, and that is to be expected from barrel-aged beers, I suppose. There is a lingering but pleasant bitterness on the palate after the beer is long gone. Makes for a great digestif.

Overall (4.0), a really nice barrel-aged beer. I'm happy to have been able to try this one, but since it's ultimately no easier for me to get than any of my favorite, hard-to-acquire barrel-aged imperial stouts, I'm not likely to have it much moving forward. At the very least, it has me curious to try some of Epic's other offerings, as this was my first.

Release # 17 - October 2013.

A - Black, solid, with red-brown highlights, and slight traces of tan head.

S - Barrel, booze, hints of vanilla, chocolate, and grassy hop notes.

T - Following the nose, the front is a wall of whiskey booze notes, woody and full. The middle comes in with big coffee and bitter chocolate notes, acidic. Flashes of char, tobacco and ash underlie the roast core. The close is narrows to a bitter line, hops coming in here with the bitter grassiness, but mostly this is the bitterness of deeply, profoundly roasted malts and coffee.

M - Silky and full, slightly oily and slick. Bitterness is present and the booze is hot and forward. This is not a beer that hides its walloping ABV.

O - Don't ignore the "Big Bad" here. This is a monster beer, fat and full, ready to lay you down in the river. Drinking it is an experience, with each drink offering up new elements. A masterly brew.

On tap at The Surly Goat in West Hollywood, CA.

Pours an opaque black with a dark khaki head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Thin streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is absolutely fantastic with dark roasted malt, cocoa powder, and huge coffee bean and coffee ground aromas. Taste is of dark roasted malt and a flavor very similar to tiramisu that has been dusted with cocoa powder and coffee grounds. There is a nice roasty bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a medium body. Overall, this is a good stout with an outstanding aroma but the taste just doesn't match up.

Very complex, and lots going on. Successive releases have toned down the complexity, and made for a much more cohesive taste. A good 20-30 minutes at room temp does so much for BBB.

Draft, at the Aces and Ales, Las Vegas, poured into a goblet

Appearance: Pours a beautiful, completely opaque, pitch-black color with a half of a finger of chocolate-colored head that dissolved away into a thin lacing of foam that partially covered the top of the beer.

Aroma: Tons of roasted malt up front, imparting notes of freshly toasted pumpernickel bread, followed by some dark chocolate aromas, caramel and brown sugar. Rich.

Taste: Strong flavors of roasted malt up front, imparting notes of freshly toasted pumpernickel bread, a touch of freshly roasted coffee and smoke, followed by some dark chocolate-like bitterness, dark molasses, brown sugar-like sweetness and a touch of star anise or licorice. Delicious!

Mouthfeel: Very chewy, very creamy and smooth, as there is no carbonation what-so-ever in this beer. With an ABV of 11.8%, there is a very pleasant alcohol warmth on the palate.

Overall: This is an excellent beer! I love the strong flavors of malt, dark chocolate and dark molasses/brown sugar-like sweetness as well as the creamy mouthfeel. Delicious!

release # 36 poured into snifter.

A: jet black with a half finger of tan head. recedes to a ring around the glass with traces in the center. slight lacing. good considering 12.4 ABV according to the bottle.

S: fresh roasted coffee upfront, slight chocolate, a bit of bourbon/oak, dark malts

T: delicious. fresh coffee is upfront followed by a bit of chocolate, a hint of oaky vanilla, and just a touch of bourbon on the finish. alcohol is well hidden, though there is a slight burn on the finish. I would like just a bit more bourbon to come through.

M: thick and creamy. low carbonation, as it appropriate for the style.

O: this is an incredible beer. I'll definitely be seeking this out again.

Batch # 36 ABV = 12.4 % . Very nice Imperial stout brewed with Cocoa Nibs, coffee , aged in whiskey Barrels !!! This is a great stout coffee forward with smooth cocoa dark flavor . Just got better as , I drank it over 2 hours & the last sip was the best !! Wow I will look for more of this A.S.A.P.!! Epic , very well done great job !! Thanks for brewing A Top A++ Beer that will age well with time !! Love this beer !!! WOW !!!

The holy grail of all stouts ever created. Tastes like liquid cocoa puffs with just a little bit of coffee and booze. This one went down in just a matter of minutes, it was that good. Way better than any other stout I've had, even better than world class BCBS in my opinion. Will be buying this WHENEVER I see it. Never in a million years would I have guessed that it was 11.5% ABV. almost too easy to drink. Batch #48 I believe.

Poured into an imperial nonic pitch black with a one finger deep mocha colored head atop that stuck like glue to the glass,no light getting thru this even when held up to the light.Mocha java aromas really stick out,wow like a Starbucks mocha java no joke.Heavily roasted flavors with only light alcohol imparted sweetness,faint smokiness lingers,the chocolate flavors are there but dont lend much sweetness just cocoa flavor.Thick and lush in the feel,hey to me Epic makes really really good beers and this is true to form.

#23 on tap at Stubbys MKE.

Poured into an Epic glass.

Appearance: pours dark, dark with a surprisingly lingering khaki head.

Smell: holy coffee notes, Batman. some chocolate, but this is definitely coffee. No booze notes to mention.

Taste: for something that's 11.5% the alcohol is well masked here. Neither the coffee nor the chocolate are overpowering. It's a pretty nice dance they're doing here.

Mouthfeel: Very clean. Not a strong aftertaste.

Overall: Dangerously sessionable. I have a bottle of this release aging at home. Very excited to see how this turns out.

Update 10-4-14: opened one of the release 27 bottles I was cellaring. So awesome. Even more dangerously sessionable than before. Just... wow. This puts Speedway Stout to shame. And I LOVE Speedway Stout.

I am so happy I still have another 23 and 27 in the cellar.

22oz bottle. Pours dark brown black with a smallish light brown head that goes to a thin film and leaves some lacing.

The aroma is sweet fudgy chocolate and a little coffee. Boozy bourbon comes out as it warms.

The flavor is sweet fudgy chocolate with a lot of roast to balance and some slightly acidic roasted coffee. As I drink more, the burnt, ashy, char roast dominates. Some vanilla and bourbon come out too. The mouthfeel is light to medium bodied and a little watery.

Overall, almost really good, but I end up thinking ashy cigarettes and day old coffee.

22 oz Bomber poured into a 20oz Firestone glass.Jet black color.The smell is mostly chocolate up front.Taste is more Coffee up front with a hint of Chocolate.Nice smooth taste and a very drinkable brew.Can`t say that I think it`s worth the high Rating it gets or the big price tag{14.99} for 22 oz.But if your in the mood to try something new it`s a good one timer.Probably would not drink again because there are a lot of good stouts out there a lot cheaper.

22oz bomber lightly chilled and poured into a snifter...big boozy nose from the barrel, but not overwhelming on the palate. Solid coffee flavor upfront then giving way to roasted malt and stouty lusciousness. Not opposed to this offering whatsoever...well done Epic

22 oz bottle poured into a snifter. Writing this review from notes, can't remember which batch it was, I think it was 4.

A: Thick dark brown/black pour. Big mocha colored head that dissipated after a few minutes.
S: Tons of coffee and roastiness. Lots of wood notes followed by bitter chocolate.
T: This is boozy. Lots of chocolate and coffee. Lots of whiskey (peaty flavor) in there as well. Very woody flavor with lots of roasty bitterness. The roastiness was taken too far in my opinion.
M: Silky smooth. Very rich and thick with moderate carbonation.
O: This is a great beer. The roastiness was a bit much but it was still very enjoyable. I would much prefer it without the peat flavors, there should be a bourbon-only version someday.

Black as night with no penetration to light. A minuscule layer of khaki colored foam covers the majority of the top. Brussels lacing. I smell very bitter coffee similar to iced coffee. The coffee flavor is like very bitter iced coffee similar to coffee bender,but the whiskey and chocolate notes are sweet and cut the bitterness. The mouth is thick and chewy.

This is one of my favorite imperial stouts I've ever had. Great body, pours a smooth, deep black color. Beautiful dark copper head. Right off the bat you can smell the coffee and chocolate. First taste is a bitter bite from the whiskey cask aging and the acidity from the coffee. Smooths out with a wonderful dark chocolate finish. I love this beer. Perfect for a cold winter night. Make sure you share, its a big boy.

22oz bottle at roughly fridge temp poured into a snifter. Release #8 (Sep. 2012) 12.5% ABV- nearly 1 year old.

Pours out opaque black, with a nice cascading dark tan/ light mocha colored head. Fairly decent head retention for such a big beer. Spotty lacing with just a touch of alcohol legs.

Big coffee aromas, combining both ground coffee and some espresso bean, bitter dark chocolate, heavily roasted, almost slightly toasted malts, a bit of booziness comes in as it warms, somewhat whiskey like, but the whiskey barrel characters are surprisingly tamed.

Bitter roasted, toasty malts, sweet caramel, bitter dark chocolate, roasted coffee more mocha like than espresso, a bit of oak and just hints of whiskey, but again its very tamed. Pretty much o booze in the taste.

Really thick, smooth and creamy as it flows across the palate. Rich. Carbonation is kept to a minimum.

A really nice impy stout, my only complaint is that I would've liked a bit more whiskey to show through. Has a nice toasted roasted malt aspect that a lot of these barrel aged stout seem to lack.

Effectively black with a thin brown head. Leave the glass oily and spotted on the way down.

Full aroma of chocolate, mild coffee, and complementary whiskey and barrel. Vanilla and oak combine nicely with the base beer.

The flavor is, too, very well integrated. Nice combination of melted chocolates, some coffee, and integrated bourbon and barrel flavor. Alcohol is hidden very well. Some mild roast and molasses present.

Near full in body with low-moderate carbonation.

A very nice beer. I wish I could find a bottle of this to enjoy.

Poured from 22 oz. bottle into a Surly Darkness chalice glass. Release #7.

Appearance: Pours a dark and oily black with no other color coming through. About two fingers of deep tan head that fade into a thin patchy layer. Leaves a good amount of lacing on the glass.

Smell: A big dark aroma of coffee and chocolate. Dark roasted malts with big hints of coffee beans, dark chocolate and cocoa nibs, burnt toast, caramel, toffee, and nuts. The barrel aging is pretty subtle. Light hints of vanilla, whiskey, oak, and wood. Some molasses and brown sugar. Light hints of dark fruit and earthy hops in the background. The smell is very coffee and chocolate forward. Very rich aroma.

Taste: As big and rich as it smells. Dark roasted malts with a huge taste of fresh coffee beans. Rich chocolate and cocoa nibs. Notes of burnt caramel, toast, toffee, and nuts. The whiskey barrel is a little stronger in the taste. Notes of vanilla, oak, and wood. A little brown sugar and molasses add some sweetness. Subtle notes of hops and dark fruit. Again, the coffee and chocolate dominate, although it is not overly sweet. It is more of a bitter, drying dark.

Mouthfeel: Full bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Very rich and creamy. Has a drying bitter feel from the heavy coffee. Alcohol is hidden fairly well.

Overall: A very good coffee forward imperial stout. Great dark taste. Could of used a little more barrel aging. This might not be ideal for aging as the coffee is a huge element here.

Amazed by this beer, pitch black pour into my Stone R.I.S. chalice, absolutely absorbed all the light in my glass. Big thicket of khaki tan head forms fine even bands of lacing between sips. A perfect breakfast beer, hair of the dog, basically smells and tastes like a coffee bomb with dark bitter chocolate and oak barrel aging effects smoothing things out a good bit. Espresso notes creamy vanilla and charred oak, this was one big complex Big Bad Baptist Imperial Stout that I enjoyed immensely. Body wasn't cloying full to the max with flavor and texture, evenly carbonated...excellent offering. Overall I'm in love and I need to find more I only had one bottle and I need more of this nectar. I've officially been baptized!

Probably one of the best stouts I've ever had. Thought that the first time I tried it, and now I'm having it again and saying the same thing.
