From a 650 ml bottle (Batch 14, Denver Bottle # 1317, 12.1% ABV) into a snifter.
A-The pour is thick and heavy-looking. The brew is pitch-black with finger of brown head that fades quickly into a collar. Pretty standard stuff.
S-The smell is heavy on the coffee and dark/bitter chocolate. The coffee scent is rich and heavily-roasted, like espresso grounds. It is a touch acidic with only a little bit of dark caramel underneath for sweetness. The alcohol is well-concealed for a 12.1% brew.
T-The taste is also full of coffee at first, but the acidic nature of the smell is mitigated by milky chocolate and cocoa powder that (along with the dark chocolate tastes) give a little more balance and sweetness. There is some vanilla-bourbon caramel underneath the coffee and chocolate. Booze is warming, but never burning or obtrusive.
M-The feel is pretty heavy and substantial. Carbonation is low to moderate. This beer is a sipper.
O-This is a well-done, but not extraordinary, coffee imperial stout. I could use a little less coffee ground scent in the smell, but if you like your java dark and higher in acidity, this brew should appeal. The taste is more balanced, and the milky cocoa and vanilla/bourbon caramel provide a nice counterpoint to the coffee. Nice, heavy mouthfeel, too.
