Pours a dark brown chocolate color with very little head. The nose is complex, coffee and very prominent chocolate. The taste is even more complex with some hints of raisin mixed in. Such a yummy beer. (201 characters)

Poured from a 22oz bomber. Dark impenetrable black with a little head. Aromas of coffee. Tastes of coffee with background of dark, unsweetened chocolate. Goes down smooth. You do notice the bourbon on the way down or even more in the aftertaste but not overwhelming. Subtle. Solid stout but I don't think it is anywhere near a 97 rating. Thick dark black pour with no head. Smells like cocoa and coffee beans. Not much alcohol smell at all. Big thick mouthfeel. Tastes like a chocolate covered espresso bean. Minor hints of whiskey. No alcohol taste. Terrific beer! (227 characters)

22 oz Bomber poured into a 20oz Firestone glass.Jet black color.The smell is mostly chocolate up front.Taste is more Coffee up front with a hint of Chocolate.Nice smooth taste and a very drinkable brew.Can`t say that I think it`s worth the high Rating it gets or the big price tag{14.99} for 22 oz.But if your in the mood to try something new it`s a good one timer.Probably would not drink again because there are a lot of good stouts out there a lot cheaper. (460 characters)

release # 36 poured into snifter.

A: jet black with a half finger of tan head. recedes to a ring around the glass with traces in the center. slight lacing. good considering 12.4 ABV according to the bottle.

S: fresh roasted coffee upfront, slight chocolate, a bit of bourbon/oak, dark malts

T: delicious. fresh coffee is upfront followed by a bit of chocolate, a hint of oaky vanilla, and just a touch of bourbon on the finish. alcohol is well hidden, though there is a slight burn on the finish. I would like just a bit more bourbon to come through.

M: thick and creamy. low carbonation, as it appropriate for the style.

O: this is an incredible beer. I'll definitely be seeking this out again. (705 characters)

First sampled on tap at Reefpoint in Racine. Finally found a bottle for a proper review.
This is great stuff, a worthy consolation prize for BCS Coffee if ever there was one.

Apparently my earlier rating can't be updated with attributes, so i'm forced to delete it and re-enter a review. Originally was 4.3, now rating #2300 of BBB.

Pours brownish black, with a sizable head of creamy mocha foam on top. Sticky lacing coats the glass. Foam takes a little while to dissipate, eventually looks like dark chocolate milk on the surface.

Aroma is huge, coffee and roasted malt are equally big. Rich, roasty, and chocolatey.

Fudgy chocolate, dark and bittersweet, rich coffee layers throughout. Lingering dry chocolate bitterness in the aftertaste. Roastiness is a running theme, coffee and malts blend seamlessly. Nutty toasted almond as it warms up. The barrel is not a prominent part of the taste, though it clearly smooths and melds all the rough edges very well. Some light oaky woodiness in the dry aftertaste, but no overt whiskey flavors really.

It's blended very well, allowing the coffee and roasted malt to comprise the bulk of it with some light hints of barrel character lingering in the background. Overall this is very nice and i'll look for it again. (1,269 characters)

Lots of coffee and a bit of chocolate. Roasted malt aroma is quite strong. Pours dark mahogany, cloudy, lost of lace on the sides of the glass. A bit of toffee. Sticky sweet to start, then bitter into the finish. A bit on the thin side. Lightly carbonated. A tad dry. But, it packs a good finish. (304 characters)

22 oz bottle into a wine glass.

Appearance: Pours a pitch-black color. The head is a finger high, with a tan shade. Creaminess is excellent, but the retention is rather low (unsurprising, considering it’s a 12% barrel-aged monster). Some lacing is at least left on the glass. (4)

Smell: Holy crap. This is mocha heaven. Roasted black coffee, dark chocolate, and brownie batter, oh my! And the barrel presence is beautifully nuanced inside the other notes, bringing very slight vanilla and oak. But the best part? It doesn’t come across as being excessively sweet. This is massive and decadent smelling, yet not cloying or diabetic – in other words, nearly perfect. (4.5)

Taste: The flavor profile thankfully follows through. It opens up with black coffee and dark chocolate (read: mocha), slowly but surely fading into oaky barrel notes. I pick up wisps of bitter hops, dark fruit, and whiskey on occasions. A finishing combination of vanilla cream and *slight* alcohol really just work. As does everything else about this brew – it’s balanced, it’s deep enough, it’s cohesive, it’s sophisticated, it’s beautiful, it’s like someone melted an 85% cocoa bar into my cup of Irish coffee…while in heaven. Mouthfeel: Not quite as viscous as motor oil, but the texture is more than good enough – medium to slightly full bodied, and velvety smooth. It finishes sweetly, though not ridiculously so. It also hits a nice medium between being rich and being easy to drink. Carbonation levels are just right, as well. (4.5)

Overall: This is EXACTLY what I anticipated KBS would taste like. Except there’s no hysteria surrounding the release of this brew, just a ridiculously delicious imperial stout that almost sits on the shelf. But even if this beer did reach KBS/BCBS/Parabola levels of yearly release insanity…I’d still hunt it down like Predator hunting down a fat guy. This beer is worthy of being hyped, and thank Diablo it really isn’t. (4.75)

All around coffee-bomb. Super dark roasted coffee flavor drowns out the whiskey-barrel completely! The dark bitter coffee smell is pretty much exactly what I'm getting on the tongue as well with a little bit of dark chocolate goodness and some hints of vanilla. Mouthfeel is chewy with medium-low carbonation. Glad to be a coffee fan or this probably wouldn't be for me. Batch #41. (381 characters)

Release #42

A: The pitch black liquid spewed forth into my goblet producing a persistent dark brown head. Streaks of fine bubbles kick up when swirled and slowly slide down the edge. No glimmer of light shines through even on the edges.

S: Moderate dark roasted coffee, dark chocolate not 100% cacao - more like 70% with a little sweetness. Mild caramel with a hint of cherry. No hop aroma, light fruity esters from the ferment.

T: Beautiful, big dark chocolate flavor right from the start - Sweet but in the way a chocolate bar is. Milk chocolate, caramel, vanilla and toffee come through in the middle followed by a blast of coffee to round it out. The bitterness is low to medium with a mild ethenol / wiskey / boozey character. The barrel doesn’t come through at all. Balance is on the sweet malt / chocolate side.

M: Moderate alcohol warming in the chest. Medium carbonation with a medium full mouthfeel. creamy with no astringency.

O: Tons of chocolate and coffee, very dessert like. Put this beer in your mouthhole if you haven’t tried it - it’s a tasty beer for sure just not my thing. Would have liked more barrel and less sweetness. (1,155 characters)

L: Jet black, no lacing bascially no head

S: Coffee dominates. No bourbon detected. Dark roast malts.

T: Well balanced, slight carbonation. Nice blend of bourbon and coffee. Bourbon is subtle and not overwhelming. Dark chocolate present. As it warms the bitterness comes out.

F: Smooth

O: A really nice beer. Nothing jumps out or dominates. The bourbon, coffee and chocolate are well integrated. The beer is almost too smooth w/o any high notes. Can a beer be too well integrated? This opinion might be a consequence of trying Lost Abbey Deliverance two nights before. (601 characters)

Release #31- Charming Beard Coffee.

Pours opaque black. The 1/4 inch tan head quickly fades to a thin film on top and leaves faint spotty lace.

The smell is of dark chocolate, vanilla, pipe tobacco, dark chocolate, toasted coconut and faint booze.

The taste is of bitter black coffee, dark chocolate, ripe dark fruit and hints of bourbon.

The texture is heavy bodied, thick and viscous with low carbonation.

A big, barrel aged stout that is dominated by bitter black coffee flavor. (492 characters)

Deep dark black with little to no head - non-aggressive poor.

The aroma is wonderful. Dark chocolate and coffee come off strong.

This is extremely well made. On the taste, I get sweet chocolate and sugar, vanilla, nutmeg, pecan coffee (or something similar), bourbon, brown sugar, oak, and char. On top of all that is a nice tobacco and nutty finish.

It's full bodied and sticky - just the way I like it. The velvety texture of the beer slips down so easily. The booze is well-hidden.

Crazy good! This reminds me a lot of Stone's w00tstout, one of my favorites. It's like a rich dessert with super complex flavors and a lingering taste. (644 characters)

One of the best barrel-aged stouts I have had. Poured pretty thick with a great nose of bourbon and coffee. Up front taste was chocolate, with a little sweetness from the residual sugar. Middle started to get some of the astringency from the coffee and had a great oaky finish.

One of my favorites, try it out! (312 characters)

22oz bomber lightly chilled and poured into a snifter...big boozy nose from the barrel, but not overwhelming on the palate. Solid coffee flavor upfront then giving way to roasted malt and stouty lusciousness. Not opposed to this offering whatsoever...well done Epic (266 characters)

Poured Big Bad BAPTIST into a snifter.

A - Pours black as midnight with a bubble of mocha head.

S - Coffee , dark chocolates on first sniff. Getting just a touch of vanilla.

T - Taste is nice. Smooth dark chocolates initially with strong coffee flavors. Mid palate getting vanilla, roasted malts and more coffee. On the aftertaste hints of char and vanilla with more roast and coffee.

M - Smooth full body with low carbonation.

O - Damn good beer. Recommended Cheers! (473 characters)

Poured into a stout glass, and this is oil black, with a cappuccino-like thick head that looks silky. Rich, velvety-thick liquid. (Lacing stuck all over the glass throughout)
Oh nice the chocolate up front smells fantastic. There's also a black licorice effect, coffee, wooden barrel and lurking dark fruit, slight alcohol burn. To me, dark cocoa comes through the most, even more so than the coffee. Smells terrific.
Sweet taste up front, chewy mouthfeel to experience this great chocolate and coffee syrup flavor, and a finishing bourbon bite/ chalky hop bitterness of a sensation that balances out this bad boy's sweeter side.
Medium body, super-smooth sipping, and appropriately lower carbonation.
This is easily in my top 5 ever tried of this style. Big and balanced, this stout is a must have for any imperial stout fan. (830 characters)

The beer pours very little head even with a hard pour. The head is a bubbly dark and chocolatey brown that dissipates very quickly. The beer itself is a very dark brown that borders on black and is opaque.

The beer smell is a variety of roasted malt, dark and milk chocolate smell, and a very strong coffee smell with a slight hing of the whiskey barrels that are in. The beer taste is even more complex and richer than the smell.

The beer taste has a complex mix that starts with a roasted malt taste that turns into a sweet dark chocolate with coffee in notes and finishes with coffee and whiskey barrel with hints of vanilla.

The mouthfeel is fairly smooth and silky with some light carbonation that gives it a bit more texture.

Overall, a fantastic beer and one of the best Imperial Stouts. In addition to a cheap price relative to other beers of this caliber, I would highly recommend this one. (903 characters)

Poured from a bomber bottle into a snifter.

L - Brown so dark it is almost black. When seen at edges it is clear, but light does not make it through the glass. Head is dark tan. It is not very thick on the initial pour, but a moderate sheet remains on the surface. Light lacing and "legs" like a strong wine.

S - Aroma is mostly espresso with a hint of smoke and roastiness. Nesquik chocolate milk. Oak. Bourbon with a strong alcohol smell.

T - Complex blend of espresso, chocolate and bourbon, with the balance leaning slightly towards bourbon. Hops are evident, but the type is not obvious to me. Slightly chalky powdered chocolate milk mix.

F - Medium to full body. Low carbonation. Silky feel. Strong alcohol burn. strog hops bitterness. Everything well blended.

O - Well balanced chocolate and bourbon. Smooth and drinkable for such a big beer. Nice. (876 characters)

Big, huge rich stout. Massive coffee over powers and leaves very little Bourbon to shine through. I was really excited about this and was craving a big BA stout on a cold
Winter night, instead I got waves of the classic 'coffee on the burner for too long' then got cold.In fairness, this was an issue with the batch I received (#25) It is exceptionally drinkable at 11.8% would like to try again, it tastes like it didn't stay in the barrel long at all~ (640 characters)

To me this is a great example of brewers using bourbon barrel aging to improve a stout, but not feature the bourbon barrel as an up front experience. The beer is deliciously roasted with beautiful coconut notes and not a sharp edge anywhere. Highly recommended. (263 characters)

Release # 17 - October 2013.

A - Black, solid, with red-brown highlights, and slight traces of tan head.

S - Barrel, booze, hints of vanilla, chocolate, and grassy hop notes.

T - Following the nose, the front is a wall of whiskey booze notes, woody and full. The middle comes in with big coffee and bitter chocolate notes, acidic. Flashes of char, tobacco and ash underlie the roast core. The close is narrows to a bitter line, hops coming in here with the bitter grassiness, but mostly this is the bitterness of deeply, profoundly roasted malts and coffee.

M - Silky and full, slightly oily and slick. Bitterness is present and the booze is hot and forward. This is not a beer that hides its walloping ABV.

O - Don't ignore the "Big Bad" here. This is a monster beer, fat and full, ready to lay you down in the river. Drinking it is an experience, with each drink offering up new elements. A masterly brew. (920 characters)

Absolutely delicious! Aromatic, chocolate, coffee, maybe hint of tobacco in the smell. Taste is thick, creamy slightly chocolatey. Got just a hint of booze awhile into the glass. Surprisingly one of the best American Imperial Stouts I've ever had. Cheers! (260 characters)
