Pours a thick, pitch black color with a large, brownish-java colored head that goes down slowly. Scent is...amazing...So much fresh coffee in the aroma. Sweet vanilla aromas with subtle oak. A good amount of bourbon whiskey in the nose. Dark chocolate with more coffee and espresso. Such an inviting aroma. Taste is just as good! At first, I get sweet vanilla and bourbon. A bit of a chocolate liqueur flavor as well. Fresh espresso with a hint of coconut and dark fruits. More bourbon in the finish. High ABV is noticeable, but well-balanced with the flavors. Mouthfeel is full-bodied and creamy. Drinkability is high, especially for such a big beer. Overall, I was blown away by this beer. I haven't been too impressed by all the other offering I have had from Epic, but this one definitely is EPIC (as much as I hate to use that overused word). Definitely goes up there with the BCBSs, Parabolas, and KBSs.

Release #3

A= Pours a deep black color with the smallest amount of nice brown head that falls to a skin on top of the glass. Solid lacing and little retention are left in the glass.

S= Smells like a big ass imperial stout. Tons of liqorice and soy sauce. A deep chocolate and coffee flavors are buried under it.

T= The flavor isn't nearly as harsh as the nose is. It's got a great chocolate flavor. Tons of almost a milk chocolate to it. There is a decent amount of roasty malt to it as well but mostly a delicious milky chocolate. The soy sauce from the nose is almost totally gone and there is no harsh alcohol present.

M= Well carbonated to a silky smooth texture.

O= The smell left me wanting something different but this beer is bad ass. A great beer actually. I had written off Epic after being dissapointed by a few of their beers but this one is no joke. I almost can't believe it's the sae brewery. This beer is excellent. Get this and drink them no need to age.

22oz into a pint

A - Pours a deep black motor oil color with just about the same texture. Little mocha colored head, breaks down to a film fairly quickly.

S - Hefty coffee flavor, roasted with a few burnt notes. I catch a little bit of deep flavors of chocolate, maybe even chipotles.

T - Starts off roasty, deep - with little bits of a campfire. Gets more coffee flavors, deep and dark. Chocolate and a little bit of oak in the middle. Hopping well hidden. Finishes with a burnt sticky flavor.

M - Strong body, moderate to lighter in carbonation by comparison. High alcohol is hidden pretty well. I get some burnt flavors sticking to the tongue.

O/D - An interesting big coffee stout. A bit hefty to the palette, the burnt flavors become very dominant. Alcohol is pretty potent, this one is a slow long sipper - fortunately the beer's style plays that way. A bit filling from its full bodied nature.

Spit-shined boot black with a thin coating of dense tan head.

Has a well-focused aroma consisting of dark chocolate, coffee and molasses.

Quite smooth and creamy up front with a hit of coffee and chocolate following. Other notes of grain, pine, caramel and plum float in the middle. Has a touch of grind residue in the finish that serves to make it that much more authentic.

Has a big body of course, but carries its weight and hold its alcohol well.

This is how it ought to be.

A: pitch black with a dark brown head. retention really is not very impressive. neither is the lacing.

S: coffee all up in your face. and chocolate. man this is inviting. a little bit of bitterness with dark burnt grain.

T: similar to the nose, a rich french roast starts the palate off. vanilla beans. dark chocolate. burnt grains. this thing is complex with new flavors coming across each sip. the flavor lingers with coffee and chocolate. bitter. absolutely fantastic.

M: mild carbonation. definitely a full body.

D: man this is good. the flavor as well as the nose is everything i want in a coffee stout. really impressed and well worth the search.

Pours black with a dark khaki head. Alright retention given its barrel aged. Never smelt anything quite like this and I like. No, I love it. Smells of huge whiskey filled burnt mocha frappucino. Huge cocoa, coffee, and whiskey barrels. Flavor is just as unique; starts off with the whiskey barrels, then some coffee, and leaves with a huge thick, melted chocolate. A medium to fuller mouthfeel. Overall, yeah, this beer is great.

Opaque black pour with no light filtering through at all. Dark khaki head, 1 fingers worth. Only downside is the beer is light on head retention. Thin sheen of wet lace all around the glass.

Nose is very complex. Coffee overwhelms, but cocoa comes through along with oak underneath that. Smells like a roasted chocolate covered espresso bean.

Strong coffee flavor, espresso even, with a strong roast chocolate presence. Citrus hops manage to sneak through all the coffee and chocolate bitters in the finish. Definite smoked oak flavor from the barrels. Not really picking up the whiskey until the very end of the bottle. Vanilla starts to pick up late in the bottle, too. Wow, this is complex.

Feel is a bit disappointing. A little on the thin side. For a beer this powerful on the tongue, a thicker feel would pair better.

Overall, this rivals the best coffee stouts I've tasted. The best beer I've had from Epic.

Outstanding. Everything you would want in an Imperial stout: huge roasted malt, dark molasses sweetness, cocoa/coffee adds an awesome flavor that melds with the molasses/bourbon sweetness. This is a huge tasty beer, with nothing offensive or cloying about it.

Deep black body, creamy chestnut head. Nose is spectacularly rich, a candy store of molasses, caramel, toasted marshmallow, and dark chocolate. Give it a sip, though, and you've got a lot more than that...especially first off, as warm, woody bourbon flavors comes rippling over the front end. Keep sipping and you see that the palate stays in that mode, condensed, powerful, but adding layer upon layer as the drink goes on: first chewy, chocolate-covered fruit, then crisp, smoky, and toasty (think chocolate-covered pretzel), and finally finishing with the spice of clove and fresh ginger. In all, this is a gorgeous beer. The only problem I have is that, like I said before, it really doesn't expand. It's a concentrated experience, never quite as full-bodied and lingering as other top contenders in its class. But still, just because it isn't the best, that doesn't mean that what's contained in this bottle isn't pure magic. Overall, this stout is nothing less than extraordinary. Cheers!

A - Pours a pitch black with 2 fingers of tan foam that leaves solid lacing down the glass as the foam retreats.
S - Big coffee aroma is what hits you first, then you start to notice the chocolate and slight hints of the whiskey barrel and even some smokiness. Very nice aroma that reminds you of your morning cup of coffee.
T - Wow, the coffee really comes through in the taste. There is some nice roasted malts along with a hint of smoke. I might be picking up the whiskey a bit but its certainly not a strong note.
The flavor is very enjoyable.
M/D - Smooth bodied, almost creamy mouthfeel, very little carbonation. Slightly oily body as well. This is very easy to drink and hides the alcohol very well. Too well.

22oz bottle poured into a pint glass
A: Pure jet black, with a very thin head that disappears in a flash.
S: Very, very strong coffee/espresso. I'm not picking up much else the coffee is so strong, but it smells like a mighty nice cup of java.
T: Tons of coffee again, along with a bit of caramel and a slight hops kick at the end. You almost question if at the end of a 11.7% bottle that tastes like this whether you'll be feeling more alcohol or caffeine. A bit one-dimensional, but I like coffee so this tastes mighty fine, and the alcohol is well hidden. Bitter coffee finish.
M: Full-bodied and rich.
O: I honestly could confuse this with a cold Irish espresso. If you don't like coffee I wouldn't recommend this, but I certainly enjoy it.

22oz bottle from Beerandboards (thanks!). Release #8 (bottled 09/12). Served in a Burnt Hickory snifter.

Pours jet black with one and a half fingers of active, foamy tan head. Head recedes to a ring around the glass and leaves nice patches of lace.

Smells of coffee, whisky, rich roasty malts and caramel. Nice!

Tasty, bold, up front coffee leads. Followed by dark chocolate, whisky, slightly burnt oak, caramel, vanilla and a nice booze bite. It's a well done blend that my description can't do justice to.

Medium full, creamy feel with pleasantly subtle carbonation. Long whiskey infused coffee finish.

While admittedly I haven't had as many barrel aged coffee stouts as I'd like, Big Bad Baptist is far and away the best I've tried so far. The coffee is delicious, not too burnt and stays in the forefront while the whiskey dances around it. Very well done and worth seeking out.

Appearance- Pours up a fair amount of head which seems to have really good retention. The head is a dark beige/mocha while the body is an opaque, dark chocolate black. Only a few spots of lacing at the moment. Pretty much no lacing at all.

Nose- Delicious, creamy, and rich. Loads of chocolate that begin to suggest fudge. Hints of cherries and raisins. Coffee and roasted notes. Some nuttiness. The aroma from the glass is much more mellow, much more subtle, but not any less delicious. Very milky with slight notes of butter, caramel, toffee, and vanilla. If the taste reflects these notes, this is going to be a damn good beer.

Taste- Starts off with chocolate that quickly turns to fudge and brownie while revealing raisin and cherries and plenty of alcohol. Thick coffee with hints of wood, oak, and vanilla. Very warm on the finish- the tongue tingles with both heat and spice. Lots of bourbon but chocolate and coffee are by far the most dominant notes. Very solid, very good imperial stout. Not in my top ten but definitely worth the price. Some notes of oatmeal and a very complex malt bill that has lots of balance and integration. A few more flavor notes and this would be in the same class as Abyss, Parabola, and Bourbon County. Very well rounded. Some hints of leather and tobacco but these are very slight.

Mouthfeel- Along with the aroma, this is one of the most notable aspects of this beer. Thick and heavy but still rich, creamy, and silky. A slight grittiness on the finish.

Drinkability- Very easygoing. While the heat was upfront in the beginning, it is beginning to hide behind the chocolate and coffee. I will gladly pay 12 dollars for another bottle which I will be aging.

Overall- Solid, very good, almost great beer. If you're a fan of imperial stouts, this is a must try. If you're not, still try it. This beer is definitely more than the sum of its parts. I might even get two more bottles.

22 oz. bottle served in Darkess snifter. Release #1, big thanks to MarkIntihar for the extra.

A: Pours a jet black with some brown hued edges and nice khaki head that has some nice retention.

S: Solid coffee bean dominates the nose upfront with a touch of roasted malt and a subtle whiskey backend.

T: Again this is coffee forward, but the whiskey barrel is integrated very nicely. The vanilla and caramel flavors blend nicely with the chocolate, coffee and roasted malts. Tastes like a sweeter version of an Irish coffee. No heat, but the alcohol is noticeable.

M: A tad thin in the body with ample carbonation. I would have liked a little thicker mouthfeel. Coffee lingers on palate long after the sip is complete.

O: I though Grand Teton's Wake Up Call was the most coffee forward until his came along. The barrel is well integrated and sort of lingers in the background to let the coffee and roasty qualities really shine.

Release #13. 22oz bottle poured into a tulip. Pours jet black and I don't see much light getting through at all; overage khaki head that falls and leaves solid retention/lacing. The aromas are very nice. Tons of black coffee. Lots of chocolate. Hints of vanilla. The whiskey seems to be overshadowed and seems to be just an accent in the nose. The flavors are wonderful. Lots of stuff going on. The coffee really seems to be the star of this beer. More milk chocolate to give it a sweetness and dark chocolate to give it a subtle bitterness. The whiskey comes through more in the flavors, in my opinion. The oak/wood notes are pretty subtle. Lots of cocoa malts. Alcohol goes unnoticed for such a big beer. Mouthfeel is great. It's full-bodied and smooth. It's creamy and fluffy, but not like a milkshake. Moderate carbonation. This is a very fun beer to drink and a great beer to sip on. It's dangerously drinkable.

This is a wonderful stout. The coffee really shines and can go toe to toe with almost any coffee brew. The coffee flavors makes you forget this was even aged in whiskey barrels. Lots of depth to this one. It's extremely enjoyable. Highly recommended.

Batch # 9

Pours dark black with a 3 finger mocha colored head. Smells heavy of coffee and chocolate, almost no whiskey scent at all. Tastes pretty much follow the nose, coffee, chocolate, roasted malts. Mouth on this one is good, perfect carb, not too thick, not too thin. Overall this is a good coffee stout, it's just lacking the barrel that I expect to smell and taste on a good BA stout. My bottle has been aged for around 8 months so maybe that has something to do with it. I'd like to get another one of these and see how they differ from batch to batch.

Release #5

I saved this one for my 600th review on BA. I went back to my all time favorite style=BA Imperial stout.

Tons of creamy milk chocolate head is achieved with a vigorous pour (about three fingers actually). Body is the 3000 mile used motor oil standard. Nose is well, Wow! The coffee plays huge here. Really fresh ground coffee of the very fine variety. Fresh chocolate cake is there also, hold the icing. Very nice aroma. With first sip the coffee dominance continues. The coffee is just so bright and flavorful. Rich and succulent just like that perfect morning cup. The bourbon really is hard to find in this beer, maybe it could use just a little more time in the barrels. This may stand as the most pure coffee forward beer that I have ever had the joy of having. Other flavors include molasses, black cherries and bitter dark chocolate. What more can I say, the flavor, the finish, and the feel are just a coffee and stout lovers dream. I may have just found my new favorite morning brew.

Received this as an extra in trade with BA BrettHead. Enjoyed out of a 22 oz brown bomber with a production date of October 2013. Poured into an oversized 33 oz snifter.

Appearance (4.0) - Pours a rich, dark brown that pretty much comes across as black. Holding it up to the light reveals some shades of charred wood brown, but it's not very capable of letting light through at all. Atop the body sits a half to three-quarters finger of mocha colored foam that provides a blanket of head with just a few places where a larger bubble has burst, revealing the dark liquid beneath. Retention is moderate and before long, that blanket has turned into an intermittently dispersed film. Lacing is almost nonexistent, save for a few speckles on the sides of the glass as I drink it down.

Smell (4.0) - I'm a bit surprised at how well the coffee continues to power through 10 months later. I've never had this fresh, so I don't know how aggressive it is normally, but to me, there is just a really nice amount of the roasty brew infused into this beer. French roast and bittersweet chocolate interplay up front, and there is a hint of oak and whiskey hidden behind the pleasant bitterness from the coffee/cacao.

Taste (4.0) - Here, the coffee seems to have succumbed to the extended time period, but what's left is a nice roasted highlight to the roasted grains and malts contained therein. At this point, it hits the palate with the essence of coffee, rather than being a straight-up assault of arabica. This allows the bittersweet and chocolatey goodness of the nibs to shine, providing a nice sweet counterpoint to the more astringent elements of the barrel, with notes of whiskey, vanilla and wood.

Mouthfeel (3.75) - Medium-to-full bodied, with moderate-to-low carbonation. It's a bit thin, but not unpleasantly so, and that is to be expected from barrel-aged beers, I suppose. There is a lingering but pleasant bitterness on the palate after the beer is long gone. Makes for a great digestif.

Overall (4.0), a really nice barrel-aged beer. I'm happy to have been able to try this one, but since it's ultimately no easier for me to get than any of my favorite, hard-to-acquire barrel-aged imperial stouts, I'm not likely to have it much moving forward. At the very least, it has me curious to try some of Epic's other offerings, as this was my first.

Great lasting foamy head rises caramel colored and dense. Nice head retention too. Missing a touch of lacing...

Whoa. Let me preface: I despise Hazelnut, but the hazelnut in this brew is done wonderfully. Roasty, bready, tons of coffee, ripe, chocolately, deep, dark and bold. For being full of hazelnut, it's done very well.

A great amount of carbonation, prickly. Harsh initial bite followed by flowing flavors of roasty hazelnut coffee. Bitterness is high and goes very appreciated. Sweetness is that of 80% dark chocolate.

A total mind bender. It's hazelnutty, but doesn't taste or drink hazelnutty. Way recommended @ $13/22oz. IMO, this is one beer best drank cold. One of Epics best beers for sure. Cheers!

Release #1 enjoyed with rjochman

A: Pours out of the bottle black and rests in the glass pretty viscous. A big brown head raises up, but recedes quickly. Not a ton of lacing or carbonation that I can see. Wish the head stuck around a bit longer.

S: The aroma on this is really impressive. The amount of coffee and chocolate really blows me away, but the whiskey is really underneath, and understated. While the aroma on this is quite bold the balance is there, which equally as impressive.

T: I've had stouts with coffee in it before, but wow this is a new experience. The aftertaste is exactly the same as when I take a sip of actual coffee. Really blown away about just how much this tastes like coffee. Up front is chocolate, vanilla, and a bit of whiskey. After a brief second, this becomes all about the coffee.

MF: Low carbonation, thick body, and pretty damn drinkable. The finish is so dry. I just can't stop taking sips the taste is so interesting.

O: I thought this was a hit, really glad I tried it. At $12.99 I thought this was definitely worth it. Interested to see how the other releases stack up.

Release #3

A: Just as deep and dark as Release #1 with a better head retention. Nice brown head, with minimal lacing.

S: The smell is a little less balanced. Tons of coffee, but less chocolate and certainly no whiskey at all. Let's see what happens with the taste.

T: The taste is a little better, but still after a few releases I was hoping this would have improved. Ton of coffee, the aftertaste is still similar to drinking an actual cup of coffee, but the chocolate is a bit thin, less vanilla, and again no whiskey.

MF: Not quite as thick. Perhaps this would benefit from some age as Release #1 was clearly better.

O: At $11.99 I think this is definitely still worth it. Expected more, but I still definitely enjoyed it. Wish the barrel aging was a bit more present.

Release #4

A: Black pour with a couple fingers of brown head. The retention and lacing are both wonderful. This is a great looking beer. 4.5

S: Amazingly the smell is all coffee. Can't believe how deep and dark this beer is and for it to be all coffee. The bourbon and oak lie underneath with a strong chocolate character. Great balance, but coffee focused. 4.5

T: Like the aroma, the coffee dominates the taste. A bit too much for me honestly. Bourbon hangs out, making its presence known as the beer warms, but the chocolate and barrel characteristics are secondary to the coffee. I think this needs a few months to balance out. The other dimensions are there. Just not strong enough. 3.5

MF: The body is full and the carbonation is a bit high as well. Big Bad Baptist is crazy drinkable and sports a dry finish. This is a great beer. 4

O: Overall, I wish the coffee was stepped back a bit and the bourbon was more prominent. This beer is top notch, but I'm thinking it needs some age to make all the flavors come together. Not my favorite of the releases, but I would never turn it down. 4

Big Bad Baptist, on-tap @ Bier:Thirty in Bound Crossing. This is Batch #7; not sure how much batch variation has been encountered with this beer. Poured into a snifter, review from notes:

A: Opaque body with a huge tan head (impressive for a BA beer with adjuncts added) that recedes to a constant ring.

S: Tons of coffee with hints of smoke...a bit of boozy sweetness. There is an underlying whiskey note, but no real oak or vanilla, its just spirit.

T: Semi-acrid coffee on the front of the palate, with a moderate roasted malt component...hints of smoke and char again...mocha...the spirit burn on the back of the throat meshes pretty well with the notes of coffee and buried chocolate.

MF: Thinner and closer to medium than full...lighter to medium carbonation, light alcohol presence on the finish.

O: Decent but not great. I don't go gaga for this like a lot of guys buts a solid BA coffee stout.

Had a chance to try this at 2011 Brewzilla in Cleveland during Beer week. So I decided to pick up a couple bottles @ Acme in Akron, OH.

$12.99/ bottle (worth it)

Knocked my socks off. Best chocolate/ coffee imperial stout I have ever had to date. The only down side is that it's a bit sweet.

The alcohol is barely noticeable and the flavor is overwhelmingly complex. Get this one while it last. It's rumored to be a one time brew.

Poured from 22 oz bomber into snifter.

A: Pours a very dark murky brown that almost looked black. No light penetrating this sucker. Capped with a one finger mocha colored head that settled fairly quickly to a thin ring and left spotty lacing.

S: Roasted coffee beans, sweet dark chocolate, bourbon, and a hint of vanilla.

T: Follows the nose quite nicely. Good balance between roasted coffee and dark chocolate. I think I could drink this all day. Alcohol not very apparent.

M: Thick and creamy with a velvety texture that goes down rather smoothly.

O: Outstanding imperial stout. A much different beast than say BCBS but no less enjoyable.

*notes from 12/06/12

A: Pours a dark black bean color body with a thin cap of brown sugar head. Wisps away relatively soon thinning out to just a fine collar. Some loose running legs upon the glass with each sip.

S: Initial aromas are of dark roast malts with light barreling character to it – wood, sweetened vanilla, and some earthy char. Nose really blooms with fresh espresso beans and chocolate after the pour. Very nice. Has an overall coffee liqueur quality that just takes over. I could smell this brew for days.

T: Premium dark roast coffee abounds. Espresso beans coated in dark chocolate. Highly kilned malts carry through a charcoal note that is met by some oak and vanilla crème. There is a nice earthy hop presence with an almost piney accent to it. The beer has a higher level of bitterness with an emphasis from the coffee but never becoming acrid. Alcohol is present and warming but incredibly well integrated at such high levels. Some faint brewer’s licorice noted. Rich but not overly sweet. The coffee flavor in this is quite intense. Like a sweet coffee liqueur. Really great stuff.

M: Body is moderately heavy and viscid but seemingly thinner with an oily slick and fleeting feel to it. A little perplexing. Somewhat wet however silken smooth and almost non-existent at times Carbonation may be on the lower end.

D: This is a big beer so you will want to take some time with it. Super rich with intense bold flavors. The only other coffee beer I have had that was this concentrated is Pizza Port Carlsbad’s Coffee Monster. This one is on a whole nuther scale though. Somehow maintains a great balance. My biggest quandary was not picking up more of these when I had the chance…that and maybe the mouthfeel.

More like the Big Badass Baptist. I am actually shocked this is coming out of Utah.

Purchased from epic.$12 for a 22oz bottle. Into an epic snifter.

A: Pitch black with a sand colored head that bubbles up to about an inch then fades to nothing. No laying to speak of. Completely opaque.

S: coffee and a ton of it. Man. This is easily the most coffee forward beer I've ever smelt. Just incredible on the coffee note. Some sweet chocolate and a touch of cocoa. Awesome here.

T: like the nose would lead on, huge coffee, tons of roasted malt and a lot of chocolate as well. Brown sugar and coffee, with a little vanilla as well. Not a ton of barrel character but there is a bit of whiskey and oak. Huge milk chocolate as it continues to warm. Wow. Best beer from epic that I've had.

M: just about right a bit more body would help. Surprisingly not hot, just the right amount of warmth.

O: glad I got a bottle of this, easily the best beer I've had from epic. A little more bal character would really help, but this is damn tasty. I love coffee forward beers and this is awesome. Nicely done epic. Nicely done.
