Batch #9. Just jumpin' right on in: This stuff pours a deep black-brown topped by a finger of dark khaki foam. The nose comprises coffee, roasted malts, light dark chocolate powder, and the faintest hint of whiskey. The taste brings in more of the same, with the coffee taking control once everything else runs its respective course. I've heard other batches have been more whiskey-forward or whatnot, but this batch is decidedly coffee-heavy. This doesn't really detract all that much, as everything is delightfully balanced and expressive; I'm just sayin'. The body is a stolid medium, with a light moderate carbonation, a generally smooth feel, and a slightly dry finish. Overall, a very nice impy stout, one that shows what moderation can do for a barrel-aged beer. Good times, indeed.

This was brewed in SLC, # 2072 then some numbers I can't read...

Pours ebony with 2 fingers of mocha colored head. Great lacing & head retention, very bubbly...

S: Coffee, chocolate, a little bit of red pepper

T: All the nose is here up front; loads of coffee, a little caramel as well. Seems like a little barrel hiding in the background as this warms. Much coffee & chille heat, some more caramel sweetness, mocha as well. Finishes with heat, dryness, caramel, & much coffee...

MF: Medium bodied, warming, & firm carbonation. Thins as touch as this warms, still pretty nice...

Drinks so easy for the style, I liked it a little more on tap. This on the must purchase list the next time I'm back where this is feasible. LOVED this...

22 ounce bottle into snifter, batch 1; bottled 9/22/2011. Pours pitch black color with a small dense tan head with good retention; that reduces to a very thin cap that lingers. Some decent spotty lacing on the glass. Aromas of huge dark roasted coffee, dark chocolate, caramel, roasted malt, toffee, vanilla, whiskey, oak, molasses, toast, and light char. Fantastic aromas with awesome balance and complexity. Taste of big roasted coffee, dark chocolate, vanilla, caramel, roasted malt, molasses, toffee, whiskey, oak, molasses, and toast. Light bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of dark chocolate, coffee, whiskey, oak, toast, molasses, caramel, toffee, and vanilla on the finish for a while. Fantastic balance of the barrel flavors with the beer; no overwhelming whiskey flavors at all. Medium carbonation and full bodied; with a nice creamy, slick, and thick mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is extremely well hidden with only a slight warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is an absolutely fantastic barrel aged imperial stout! Great balance of flavors with the barrel aging; and very smooth to sip on for being 11.7%. This is the easier to find substitute for KBS in my book.

Beer #62 in my great Utah Brew Hunt.

So this is #9, which is aged in whiskey and bourbon barrels.

Hey now. Super tasty cocoa tones. It has quite a bit of coffee bitterness that seems to mesh extremely well with all of the characteristics of the beer. I get a very slight touch of vanilla that shows in a quite interesting way. Seems the perfect tone from a barrel, or the nicest way it could show.

I remember seeing someone on the boards here say that this was better than KBS, or something along those lines. Founders Breakfast Stout will always be one of my favorite beers, so I can't really go near that statement. But this is definitely a world class beer.

If this were bottled year round, and available at a cheaper price, this would be my go-to beer almost every day of the year. A pity it is such a rare release, but I am definitely glad I had a chance to try it.

Too bad this will most likely overshadow all other beers brewed in Utah I try from here on out.

From 01/28/12 notes. Shared with some friends, 22 oz. bottle into a tulip.

a - Pours a pitch black color with one finger of dark tan head and moderate carbonation evident. Looks great.

s - Smells of coffee, cocoa, roasted malts, bitter chocolate, whiskey, oak, and toasted malts. Lots of coffee for a whiskey barrel aged stout, but still very nice.

t - Tastes of coffee, cocoa, roasted malts, vanilla, coffee grinds, whiskey, oak, and choclate. Lots of coffee again, and some nice vanilla here. I like the taste a little bit more than the nose.

m - Medium body and moderate carbonation. Smooth and not very hot.

o - Overall a really nice stout; one of the best beers I've had from Epic so far. I thought there was a lot more coffee then whiskey in the nose and taste, but still really liked it. Would have it again.

Amazed by this beer, pitch black pour into my Stone R.I.S. chalice, absolutely absorbed all the light in my glass. Big thicket of khaki tan head forms fine even bands of lacing between sips. A perfect breakfast beer, hair of the dog, basically smells and tastes like a coffee bomb with dark bitter chocolate and oak barrel aging effects smoothing things out a good bit. Espresso notes creamy vanilla and charred oak, this was one big complex Big Bad Baptist Imperial Stout that I enjoyed immensely. Body wasn't cloying full to the max with flavor and texture, evenly carbonated...excellent offering. Overall I'm in love and I need to find more I only had one bottle and I need more of this nectar. I've officially been baptized!

Batch #10 - Cocoa Nibs and Coffee in Whiskey Barrels

A: Pours an opaque jet black in color with some very dark amber highlights and a moderate amounts of visible carbonation near the surface. The beer has a three finger tall dense foamy dark mocha head that slowly reduces to a thin film covering the entire surface of the beer, a couple of small thicker patches, and a thin ring at the edges of the glass. Significant amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Strong aromas of dark roasted malts and green + freshly roasted coffee beans with moderate aromas of oak, whiskey, and cocoa. Lightly bitter in the aroma. Very light notes of vanilla and char.

T: Moderate to strong flavors of green and freshly roasted coffee beans with some more moderate flavors of roasted dark malts. There are some more moderate elements of oak, whiskey, cocoa, vanilla, and charred wood. Light amounts of lingering bitterness.

M: Slightly heavier than medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation.

O: This beer is pretty easy to drink considering that it is 12% ABV (roughly) and it is quite enjoyable - the coffee is very present but the whiskey barrel is not as much. Very enjoyable but definitely a sipping beer considering the strength.

Lots of coffee and a tad too much roast. The thinner body is a distraction, but other than that it's solid. Chocolate and cocoa. Oaky and vanilla. Big whiskey flavors.

Solid offering, I could drink a lot of this.

Review from notes.

A: Pours black with a small off-white head on top, quickly reducing to a thin cap. Minimal lacing.

S: Lots of cocoa and chocolate upfront. Some light coffee with nice roasted malt. As it warms the coffee aroma intensifies. The barrel imparts a bit of vanilla.

T: Really nice combination of coffee and chocolate here, both a bold flavors that blend nicely for an almost mocha like flavor. Nice roasted malt underneath with a slight kick from the whiskey barrels.

M: Full bodied with moderate carbonation. Abv hidden nicely, but slightly warm as it goes down.

O: Was very impressed with this beer. Glad that Epic is now in WA.

Batch #10. Shared at Jason's place. Served in a snifter.

A - Tan foam settles to a thin cap, thick collar, and splotches of lace. Body is pitch black. Very nice looking brew.

S - A delightful blend of whiskey, oak, coffee, roasted malts, dark chocolate, and perhaps a touch of vanilla. Some faint charry notes, and not as sweet as many American stouts; excellent depth and balance here.

T - The taste is nearly as good, with heavy doses of roasted malt, coffee, dark chocolate, and oak. Perhaps a bit too far on the burnt and bitter side things, but never gets heavy-handed or fatiguing. Low sweetness and well-hidden alcohol.

M - Medium-full body, creamy texture, pleasant carbonation, and well-hidden alcohol. Was surprised by how soft this was considering the oak and coffee.

D - An excellent barrel-aged coffee stout. I would happily purchase this again if it were available locally and would very much like to have it again. Probably the best beer I've had from Utah.

From a growler purchased two days before at The Brass Tap, Greenfield, WI:

Pours black with a thin, wispy brown head. Spotted lacing sticks.

The smell is of roasted coffee/chicory, burnt brown sugar, wood and some warming alcohol.

The taste is of coffee/espresso/chicory, chocolate (hint of anise?), wood and some peppery alcohol.

It is rich and velvety with a woody lingering dryness.

This is a wonderful, complex, thick stout. Some alcohol shows, but not as much as the actual abv. A rich "sipper"!

Batch #3 care of joefc, thanks man! Bomber into a cervoise, the brew appears black with a finger of brown to khaki head that fades slow leaving some stringy lace sticking to the glass. A swirl revives about a finger back to the surface and paints some spotty lacing effect on the glass. When held to the light, the brew shows some ruby clarity through the body.

The smell is robust with earthy coffee. For being a year old at this point, it is still smelling pretty fantastic. I can only dream about how awesome the sumatra versions must be when fresh. The coffee imparts its own unique blend of citrus aspect mixed with hops. There is a raw oak quality about this that blends into the earthiness mixing with some mineral aspect that is almost dusty to rusty. The roasted aspect of the grain provides a bit of chocolate and a tang of whiskey becomes more evident as the brew warms up.

The taste is very roasty from a combination of heavily kilned grains and strong coffee flavors that are both earthy and include a bit of citrus coffee bean elements. Some warming alcohol is present with an accenting whiskey tang. The coffee's earthen aspect reminds me very much of kopi luwak for some reason. More sips reveal a bit of dusty to almost rusty mineral inclusion that while awkward at first dissolve away into a flavor of nothing but coffee and roasted grains that are at this point almost like milk chocolate with a bit of herbal hop flavoring.

This is a medium to lighter bodied brew with a modest amount of carbonation. I tip my hat to epic brewing company for making a seriously epic coffee stout. The alcohol is masterfully integrated and while the coffee flavors push to be almost excessive and overdone, it is fantastic. I need to try the other batches of this ASAP.

The beer is dark brown, nearing blackness. Atop the beer rests a half inch of dense, beige head. Aromas of roast, chocolate, spice, coffee, espresso beans, cocoa powder. Fabulous flavor following the aroma. Strong and potent coffee character without dominating the flavor profile. Medium to full-bodied with fairly low carbonation. Smooth on the palate with alcohol content very well hidden. A top-notch Imperial Stout.

Batch 1 poured from a 22oz bottle into my Stone IRS glass. It poured black in color with a frothy tan head barely covering the top of the beer and clinging to the edges of the glass. Nice lacing as I drank it.

The aroma shows a good amount of roasty, bitter coffee flavors to it. The chocolaty flavors really come out in it as well and mix pretty nicely with the whiskey. Some notes of oak and vanilla smooth it out a little. The coffee is a little dominating, but it's a pretty nice aroma overall.

The taste also has a big roasty and bitter coffee flavor throughout. It's a a little overpowering of the other flavors for me. In the finish I do get some of the dark, bitter-sweet chocolate and whiskey flavors coming out along with just a hint of vanilla.

The mouthfeel is heavy with carbonation being low. Overall it was a pretty decent beer, but the roasty, bitter, coffee was a little overpowering for me. I liked the coffee flavors, it just overshadowed the chocolate and whiskey a little too much for me. A little more balance would have really gone a long way. Pretty decent beer of the style, but not an outstanding one for me.

Shared by Lunch the other day thanks! He told me it was described to him as a "poor man's KBS" but since this is slightly more expensive than KBS and not as good, I didn't understand why anyone would say that.

Beer is black with a thin tan head, low retention, some lacing, low carbonation.

Aroma is nice, coffee, sweet, a little chocolate, mild vanilla, no oak or bourbon.

I wouldn't have guessed this was a bourbon stout. I still don't really think so. This is a coffee stout to me, the coffee bitterness is there, the flavors are mostly sweetness up front, malt and a nice coffee finish. I liked it but probably won't have it again.

Pours a big, blackish brown with a mountain of brown head that has great retention. The nose is big and robust with an immense coffee aroma and faint chocolate. The flavor is dominated by coffee with some rich, roasted malts and underlying chocolate. There is a faint, citrusy hop finish that adds a little balance to the richness of the malts. The mouthfeel is definitely full bodied, very smooth, and well carbonated.

This was a great stout. The coffee was immense and intense, the alcohol is big and warm, the flavor was profound, but at the same time it was drinkable and smooth. It was all around enjoyable.

Poured from the bottle into a large snifter, release #1.

A real nice creamy appearance of uniform light brown. Bubbles for the most part are tight but have some larger ones. Head forms normally and falls at a good but normal clip. I wouldn't stay it sticks around, but it doesn't disappear quickly either. Some spotted leopard lacing, and this body looks particularly black. I am on the fence between 4 and 4.5 on this one it could go either way. Very nice looking, and leaving a whispy cloud appearing top.

Nose is just a very simple roast coffee. Not much else, but at least the nose is particularly solid, simple and VERY well done here. Honestly, the bouquet is not varied other than that, with some soft sense, kind of creamy sensation coming. Just very solid and good.

Taste is... yeah even more of a surprise. Creamy milk sweetened coffee. A good char roast character on the finish too with a lingering almost milk lactose milk stout sense, giving to slight powdered sugar. Bigger body gives a thicker cream but nothing overpowering, sticky, or thick to swallow. Cream sensation mixes with the coffee and sweetness angle so perfectly.

Overall, it's very much a simple flavored big stout, nothing crazy, or incredibly varied, but just done extremely well. This one is a keeper, this is a winner right here.

Appearance - Black with a small khaki head. Medium collar.

Smell - A little bit peppery and spicy. Oaky. A little chocolate.

Release #13. Poured from a bomber into a snifter, the beer is jet black, thick and oily on the pour, with a halo of light brown head. It just looks thick and big. Terrific. The aromas are bittersweet, with notes of cocoa nib, coffee, vanilla, bourbon, woody notes, crème, and earthy highlights. This smells huge and layered. Flavors are very robust, with a heavy roasted character, solid cocoa nib backbone providing sweetness and bitterness, coffee highlights, a solid blast of whiskeyand booze that supplies a building warmth, earthy notes, and a steady flow of spice throughout. This is a beast. Very layered flavor profiles throughout. The body is robust, smooth, almost velvety. The aftertaste is heavily roasted, with cocoa nib, whiskey, and subtle crème. The finish is smooth, with a subtle boozy edge, and an overall dry, lingering feel. Solid, big, monster of a beer. This was a workout! Fantastic!

A vigorous pour into my small De Glazen Toren tulip produces a three finger thick, densely bubbled, darkly brown stained head. The beer is a concentrated, almost perfectly black color that shows quiet opaque. As I pour this I get rich notes of dark chocolate and spicy / toasted oak. An actual stop to inspect the nose yields deep, roasted, coffee notes (bright coffee notes actually), a deeply toasted grain character, light vanilla notes, blackened chocolate, cold espresso, some malt ball like notes, and perhaps a hint of oak woodiness and spiciness. The vanilla and and coffee notes, along with the rich dark malt base, makes me think of some sort of vanilla scented, coffee liquor. The oak / whiskey Barrel character is weird here, the spicy, woody oak was definitely quite prominent at the front of my first smell of the aroma, but it is now a lot harder to find and blends in with the ample coffee and toasted malt notes. This really smells a lot more like a coffee dessert drink of some sort than like a beer; the coffee aromatics are just so prominent. I do like that the coffee notes don’t quite get into acrid or sharp territory as the nose is quite smooth

Rich feeling and viscous as it first hits the palate. The beer has a burnt sweetness to it that balances huge roast and coffee flavors, which really come to dominate the long finish of this beer. The bitterness in the finish is huge; some of it is hop derived, but a lot of it is contributed by the roasted malt and coffee notes that just cling to the palate and really dry out the finish. Toasted and even burnt whole grain toast notes are evident, though in truth it is like toast that has been burnt to the point that the fact that it is whole grain almost doesn’t matter. Noticeable vanilla note help to soften the burnt character at the front and through the middle of each sip; other oak flavors of spicy wood actually help to accentuate the almost harsh roasted character and the added astringency in the finish makes the lingering bitterness all that much more piquant. Some Bourbon like flavors contribute to the finish and seem to dry things out a touch more. Some nice, dark chocolate notes are noticeable in the middle after the beer warms up a bit, but it remains dominated by the coffee flavors, followed closely by the roasted notes.

With so much roast character, the sweet malt character could actually be quite a bit bigger here; to be well balanced, either the roasted / burnt notes need to be dialed back or the sweet / residual malt character needs to be increased. Still this is actually quite a tasty brew and I really like how subtle the Whiskey Barrel character is here; it really only plays a supporting role and could almost be overlooked. I am on the verge of getting a cold & this is certainly a good beer to kick off the fact that I am going to be on a self-imposed beer drought for the next week to recover. Despite being aggressively burnt in focus, I am actually enjoying this a fair amount; it could be so much more acrid and harsh than it is & it somehow is escaping that. I really like that this isn’t overly heavy or rich, on the other hand it makes it easier to drink a beer that is 11.1% abv, which isn’t necessarily a good thing either.

A: poured a dark as night black in color with a nice finger worth of brown head that left good frothy lacing sticking to the glass.

S: huge coffee aroma upfront on the nose, plenty of chocolate goodness, molasses, brown sugar, great roasty character, a little bourbon booze, hints of vanilla and very nice oakiness coming through as well.

T: the coffee character was just as potent like the aroma suggested it would be alongside rich dark chocolate flavor, caramel brown sugar sweetness, great raosted malts, vanilla accents with good oaky notes and a little underlying booze.

M; the brew was medium in body with a good amount of carbonation which had a sweet, roasty, chocolatey, oaky, roasty, mildly boozy and creamy finish.

O; I honestly didn't think it was going to be that good and they proved me wrong. Definitely going to look out for more of their offerings.

On-tap at Beachwood I,

A: Pours black with a firm creamy dark tan head, good retention, nice lace.

S: Like sticking my nose in a coffee machine, big heavenly coffee bean aroma, some secondary dark chocolate.

T: Coffee and chocolate dominated the first half. The second half gets quite hoppy and grassy, it reminded me of ST Creme Brulee in this aspect, hops when you'd never expect it. Big, full flavour.

M: Full-bodied, though it does feel a bit thinner at the finish than I'd like. Creamy, with a soft carbonation.

O: An interesting tasty beer for sure, like Peche Mortel meets Yeti. The bomber price is a bit out there, but a pour on-tap was a good deal methinks.

Bottle from release #4 (bottled on 1/23/12) poured in to CBS snifter.

A - Poured black. One finger of bubbly espresso coloured head that receded to a thin layer. Some light lacing.

S - Whiskey up front that gives way to a bold espresso aroma, charred oak and cocoa nibs. The overall nose is very bitter with noticeable alcohol.

T - Massive espresso flavours up front that give way to whiskey, charred oak and heavily roasted chocolate malts. Bitter cocoa nibs are present as well, which combine with the espresso to create an almost overpowering bitterness that dominate the palate, somewhat muting the barrel aging qualities; but that is not a bad thing, as it allows the flavours to integrate well with good balance.

M - Medium to full body. Somewhat viscous. Light carbonation.

O - A little to heavy on the coffee but very good. Will be interesting to see what happens to my other bottle with a year or so of age on it.

Pours black as night with an oily, deep brown head. Aromas of charred roasted malts, dark fruits, and alcohol. In the taste, coffee, charcoal, mild sweetness and small hop presence. Bitter almost acrid malt flavor, some barrel presence, providing a nice bite the the beer. Clean alcohol flavors are hidden underneath a strong coffee presence. Full bodied, thick feel. Overall, a beast of a beer, but one thats worth fighting.

A - Thick, creamy, dark khaki head. Dark black body with thin cola highlights.

S - Nice roast, dark roasted chipotle peppers, dry espresso beans.

T - Awesome flavor profile. Medium roast coffee, milk, 60% cocoa, dry cocoa nibs, espresso beans, light woodiness.

M - Thick, smooth body. Lacks a little bit in depth.

O - An excellent Imperial Stout. Great complexity and integration.
