A 22 oz. bottle, poured to a pair of snifters and split with my wife on a snowy/sleety afternoon in Portland. Bought the bottle last weekend at Taps n Caps in nearby Camas, WA. First time I tried this was at last year's Portland International Beerfest - what a memorably bold coffee/chocolate stout!

Label:
Release #20
10.5 Alc/Vol
SLC #1442

A: Very dark and very rich, but almost no head. A thin skim of light tan swirls across the top and hangs around as a slender ring. Sparse lacing.

S: So intensely forward with the "coffee" aroma, strikingly fresh grounds with sooty chocolate. Lacking some of the expected "whiskey barrel" notes, even when warmed. Coffee bean roast is dominant; good thing I love that aroma.

T:

M:

O: Still remarkable for its huge scent and flavor, although I remember it enthralling a bit more from the keg.

Batch #18, October 2013, 12% ABV

I agree with others below that this was like a coffee stout and not much else. I didn't get any barrel characteristics and it tasted like a cup of black coffee with a shot of scotch poured in. Almost no sweetness and very little complexity. This has nothing on BCBCS or KBS. Founders regular Breakfast Stout is even more enjoyable than this and its too bad because I had high expectations.

I feel I had to review this just because it seems fairly batch dependant. This was batch #27 and it was a coffee bomb. While I love coffee in beers this was more of a coffee with beer in it, somewhere? So take my end number with a grain of salt. It poured a very nice black with an off white head that was a little too pop like for me with next to no lacing. The smell was the best part of this beer, it smelled like a coffee shop, lovely. Too bad it tasted like a cup of coffee, very little cocoa and no whiskey barrel. it came across a little thinner than I like but nice. Overall this beer was OK. Would try again just not batch #27

Got this one from ScottO. Cheers for the trade man!

From a bomber into a snifter
Exponential Series
Release no.22
ABV: 10.2%
Stout with cocoa nibs and coffee added and aged in whisky barrels

APPEARANCE: A clear black pour produces a 1+ finger, medium looking, fluffy tan head with very good retention. Black body with higher levels of carbonation for the style. Head eventually fades to a full film and ring and the carbonation calms quickly as well. A slight wisp and ring remain leaving some dots of lacing down the glass. Pretty good looking.

SMELL: Lots of coffee on the nose. Roasted and burnt coffee beans, espresso, sweet cream, caramel and toffee notes on the nose. Very coffee dominant, with burnt coffee beans and some light notes of sweet cream. Little to no cocoa or whisky barrels. One dimensional and not as advertised, but still a solid imperial coffee stout.

TASTE: Like the nose, lots of burnt coffee up front. Burnt and roasted black coffee beans with light sweet cream notes, then touches of caramel through the swallow. A big and bitter finish with notes of whisky and cocoa under an avalanche of bitter, black coffee beans and burnt espresso. Very roasted with lots of coffee bitterness that pretty much dominate any hints of whisky barrel or cocoa that might be there. Tasty for sure, but not really as advertised.

PALATE: Medium-full body and medium levels of carbonation. Creamy smooth on the palate, goes down smooth with a scratch at the swallow and finishes slightly mouth-coating. Big with more than enough weight. Some bitter coffee lingers. Really good feel.

OVERALL: This is actually a really good coffee stout. As a BA cocoa and coffee stout it is definitely lacking, but as a coffee stout, it's great. The cocoa are way outplayed here and the whisky barrel aging is pretty minimal at best, but it's still really tasty and enjoyable. Take the scores with a grain of salt, as I'm reviewing to the label specification. This is a quality imperial coffee stout, nevertheless. Recommended.

I have had Epic's Big Bad Baptist several times from a bomber, but this review is based on my experience having it on tap at Freshcraft in Denver. I had not been overly impressed with Epic Brewing based on my prior limited experiences with their Brainless Belgian-style golden ale and one of their IPAs; however, the Big Bad Baptist came along and converted me with a spiritual awakening that any evangelical Southern Baptists would envy. The Big Bad Baptist pours a deep dark brown/black with a thin brown head. The smell is reminiscent of freshly brewed dark coffee with hints of mocha and vanilla, but the coffee scent definitely dominates. The taste is more righteous than Jesus Christ himself dressed in his Sunday best. Huge dark roasted coffee notes, espresso, bittersweet and milk chocolate cocoa nibs, creamy vanilla, oak, some faint whiskey notes, and some hop bitterness lingering in the background. It has a medium thickness with some creamy vanilla essence in the body that compliments the bitter dark coffee and dark chocolate notes. A beautiful combination of coffee, chocolate, and vanilla flavors. I would not have guessed that the Big Bad Baptist clocked in at 12+% ABV. One of my all-time favorite coffee imperial stouts.
