Batch #13. Been sitting on this one for a month or two. 22oz poured in to a snifter.

A: Served at cellar temp. Thick pour on this one that leads to a mocha brown head. Fades down pretty quick to a ring around the glass. Not too much lacing but some patches.

S: This is where it's at. Dark, dark chocolate with extreme char. Coffee, vanilla, roasted malt, Hershey's syrup. Deep inhale gives way to a bit of alcohol but for 12.2% it's nothing.

T: Chocolate covered coffee beans, char leading in to woody vanilla and then whiskey. Minimal burn but some noticeable alcohol mouth. Translates well from the nose. I love it.

M: This is smooth. Silky but leaves a touch of alcoholic residue in the mouth and throat.

O: I was craving a huge stout and got what I bargained for. My first offering from Epic left something to be desired but this one is satisfying. Have it on a cold night and it'll warm your bones.

Batch #13. Tulip glass.

A: Pours black with a medium-dark brown cap of head which fizzles out pretty quickly, leaving a thin ring and some on the surface. No lacing and so-so retention.

S: An inviting, medium roast coffee in the forefront, a spot on match of Kopi Luwak, with some deep cocoa and charred dark malt. Big flavors that nevertheless manage to display balance.

T: Charred coffee, very dark chocolate, and just a hint of oak. I think the dark chocolate is a bit overwhelming, kind of like chocolate with a high percentage of cacao—just not that pleasing. A little boozy with moderate alcohol burn.

M: Round, full body and light carbonation. Very smooth and viscous.

O: Decent enough, has a nice aroma but the flavor is a bit one dimensional and too heavy on the dark cocoa and alcohol. The barrel treatment barely comes through.

Release #13. 22oz bottle poured into a tulip. Pours jet black and I don't see much light getting through at all; overage khaki head that falls and leaves solid retention/lacing. The aromas are very nice. Tons of black coffee. Lots of chocolate. Hints of vanilla. The whiskey seems to be overshadowed and seems to be just an accent in the nose. The flavors are wonderful. Lots of stuff going on. The coffee really seems to be the star of this beer. More milk chocolate to give it a sweetness and dark chocolate to give it a subtle bitterness. The whiskey comes through more in the flavors, in my opinion. The oak/wood notes are pretty subtle. Lots of cocoa malts. Alcohol goes unnoticed for such a big beer. Mouthfeel is great. It's full-bodied and smooth. It's creamy and fluffy, but not like a milkshake. Moderate carbonation. This is a very fun beer to drink and a great beer to sip on. It's dangerously drinkable.

This is a wonderful stout. The coffee really shines and can go toe to toe with almost any coffee brew. The coffee flavors makes you forget this was even aged in whiskey barrels. Lots of depth to this one. It's extremely enjoyable. Highly recommended.

Release #17. Den (Ben?) #1307. Bottle says 12% ABV. Scoped this one at the Middleburg Heights Heinens.

An aggressive pour gets me a finger of cocoa colored head. The body is as near black as it can be. The head diminishes to a frothy ring in a little over a minute, and a thin sheet of lacing is caught clinging against the glass.

This smells of dark chocolate and dark, richly roasted coffee. A little maltiness joins with a faint nuttines to create a nice undertone.

The java is quite strong with this one. Coffee starts it off, then in glides the chocolate, to almost gild the mouth. This is topped off with the slight flavors of wood and roasted nuts, and capped with a mild alcohol burn at the end.

The mouthfeel on this is beautifully thick and heavy. Full bodied. This is the full package.
