Very complex, and lots going on. Successive releases have toned down the complexity, and made for a much more cohesive taste. A good 20-30 minutes at room temp does so much for BBB.

Look: Lovely motor oil dark color. Pitch Black.

Smell: Like Chocolate Coffee

Taste: Like a delicious chocolate/coffee flan. Alcohol is hidden well, and oak has a slight appearance at the end.

Feel: Feels great in the mouth, like liquid silk

Overall: This is the next whale (e.g. KBS, BCBS) once people realize how good it is.

Perfectly pleasant coffee and cacao beer, and anyone who loves the aforementioned two elements will definitely like this beer. Points off, however, because the bourbon barrel really does NOT come through here, which is really disappointing. Some creamy vanilla from the barrel treatment would really have raised this beer to another level.

Looks pitch black, small, light brown head sticking around the glass. Some alcohol legs sticking behind. Looks really nice.

Smells like a mocha. Big chocolate and coffee. Cold pressed coffee, with some cream and sugar perhaps. I wouldn't prefer that sweetness in my own coffee, as I like it black, but it smells like a great chocolatey, coffee forward dessert.

Upfront, the dryness from the oak, then some semi-sweet chocolate and soft vanilla, almost like a cookie. Then it goes down and the alcohol starts to tingle and lightly burn the tongue and warm the throat. Finishes very nicely and balanced.

Lighter side of full bodied, more of a medium plus body. Pretty nice creaminess to it as well.

Overall, if you dislike the thin mouth from KBS and maybe find the coffee to dominate the bourbon and are looking for more balance, then this is for you. Not sure why the ratings aren't more around 4.5. It likely hasn't quite met the masses yet or does not deliver that rareness factor.

Release 45 poured into a tulip glass at cellar temp.. L: dark brown color, nice 1/4 inch head that hangs around. S: fresh coffee, chocolate, malt, vanilla, touch of bourbon. T: follows suit: coffee, chocolate, with oak and vanilla. the bourbon is slight here, but there's no alcohol either. the finish is really smooth on this one. M: silky, creamy, very nice carbonation.

Fresh off some other coffee stouts, I gotta say I'm impressed with this one. Have another that I'm aging, so that'll be fun. But I'll echo others in saying that this is overlooked. If you see it and you like the style, pick one up!

Pours a deep jet black, slightly oily but highly viscous with a very thin layer of creamy light khaki foam.

An immediate wave of chocolate and freshly ground coffee hits first, with some vanilla, toffee, and caramel notes to add as well as a ton of roastiness in general.

Coffee and chocolate both battle to be the standout ingredient in this beer. Tons of bitter but not overwhelmingly roast and some oak, earth, and vanilla.

Heavy-bodied, light carbonation, bitter roast, silky smooth, semi-chewy.

I was very happy with this beer overall, the one downside I have to remark on is the lack of bourbon aroma and flavor, but that is splitting hairs because this is damn good either way.

A - Pitch black with minimal head around the edges. Head is tan in color with good lacing.

S - Sweetness and chocolate. Prunes, raisins, and some hops.

T - Very sweet front with chocolate middle and a mildly bitter coffee aftertaste.

M- Heavy with some carbination and alcohol burn. Nice and smooth.

O - Easy drinking beer. Pleastant sweetness with tons of flavor and not much bitterness.

2011 bottle opened in 2015. It's possible my review is on the high side due to the aging.

Appearance – Pitch black with a nice brown head and lacing that initially runs back into the beer, then sticks to the glass as the beer sits longer.

Smell – A powerful blast of espresso coffee (maybe too much in the smell, but it works for the taste), roasted malts, whisky, and chocolate. Just a touch of vanilla.

Taste – Whisky is more pronounced in the taste than the smell, but it's not overpowering; it’s actually the perfect amount. Espresso, malt, and chocolate. Very nice!

Mouthfeel – Creamy, and velvety, perfectly carbonated. Although the whiskey lingers in the aftertaste, it’s very pleasant and not too strong.

Drinkability – A surprisingly good stout. Highly recommended!

Poured from bottle from a # 39 vintage (11.7 % abv) into a snifter

Appearance – The beer pours a pitch black color with a one finger head of thick tan foam. The foam has a great level of retention, very slowly fading over a long time to leave a lighter level of foamy lace on the sides of the glass. Swirling the brew in the glass shows some thickness to the brew, with some fingers of beer clinging to the sides of the glass and slowly descending to the base of the glass.

Smell – The aroma of the beer is massive of a coffee smell mixed with tons of roasted malt and some aromas of a sweeter caramel and some chocolate. Mingling with these aromas are some wonderful smells of a more woody nature as well as some bourbon boozy smells. While there is a sweetness in the nose it is rather light in comparison to the other aromas, with the overall smell having a very rich and dark smell overall.

Taste – The taste begins with a huge flavor of a roasted malt mixed with a big showing of the coffee that was present in the nose. There is a lighter sweetness upfront of a caramel and vanilla nature, which grow stronger and stronger as the taste moves on further to the end. All while the sweetness increases, the roasted malt flavors actually dwindle, but are replaced by more and more coffee. While smoother upfront, boozy flavors of a bourbon nature as well as a bit of wood come to the tongue, bringing a bit of a burn and a little bit of an astringency. While this is said these coffee and alcohol flavors balance nicely the sweet, and with more caramel and cocoa coming to the tongue at the end of the taste, one is left with a massively rich and boozy, but very enjoyable flavor, to linger on the tongue.

Mouthfeel – While still rather thick, the body of the beer is actually somewhat light for a beer of 11.7 % with a carbonation level that is rather average. A little thicker of a body may have been slightly better for the super rich dark, boozy, and sweet flavors of the brew. Although with that said, for the big coffee and bourbon boozy flavors of the beer, the feel was somewhat appropriate and made for a wonderfully easy-ish drinking brew (as at 11.7 % easy-ish is what you want… so…).

Overall – This is a fantastic brew with tons of flavor!! Deep and dark, but balanced by some nice sweetness. It is also bourbon boozy but still very drinkable. Along with this the beer has loads of delicious coffee. One amazingly flavorful and delicious brew!!

EBF sample. Pours syrupy and black. The beer sticks to my sample cup. Aroma is impressive. Coffee and chocolate, both very bold. Maybe a little bit of dark fruit. The flavor is immense and filled with bitter coffee and espresso along with dark chocolate. Faint dark fruit. It's mostly a big one-two punch of coffee and chocolate but it's done very well. Espresso bean finish. Full, thick and oily feel. Some alcohol heat. Great feel with lingering bitterness. I wish I had this on my radar earlier.

Appearance - The beer was a murky black color with mocha colored bubbles clinging to the sides of the glass.

Smell - Chocolate is the attention getter in the aroma. The boozy notes are present, though fairly well masked.

Taste - The bourbon notes make the first impression. Chocolate, nice toasty malts, and bourbon create the taste storm. My favorite element is the toastiness of the malts. The taste finishes in a warm after, with little burn.

Mouthfeel - The beer is thick enough to be a stout, but I thick the aging may have eroded the thickness. Carbonation is low, as one might expect.

Overall - I am a little surprised this one is held in high regard. I was not terribly impressed. Still, this is a great BA stout.

This was brewed in SLC, # 2072 then some numbers I can't read...

Pours ebony with 2 fingers of mocha colored head. Great lacing & head retention, very bubbly...

S: Coffee, chocolate, a little bit of red pepper

T: All the nose is here up front; loads of coffee, a little caramel as well. Seems like a little barrel hiding in the background as this warms. Much coffee & chille heat, some more caramel sweetness, mocha as well. Finishes with heat, dryness, caramel, & much coffee...

MF: Medium bodied, warming, & firm carbonation. Thins as touch as this warms, still pretty nice...

Drinks so easy for the style, I liked it a little more on tap. This on the must purchase list the next time I'm back where this is feasible. LOVED this...

Release #37. Dark/brown almost black in color with slight ruby red hues around the rim of the glass. Beautiful oil like viscosity with only a few bubbles in the middle and spotty in nature lacing. Aroma of cocoa, bourbon, wood, vanilla, coffee and chocolate. Tastes of strong bittersweet chocolate, vanilla, some burnt sugar, hints of oak and bourbon plus coffee. Thick, creamy, and smooth on the palate with just a bit of bitterness and burn in the finish. I must say I found this to be one of the best Imperial Stouts I've had the chance to enjoy. Well done Epic!

Release 45, 10.9%. Pours pitch black. Normal head volume, outstanding retention and World Class lacing.

Rich complex nose of coffee, chocolate, roast and a bit of vanilla. As it warms, bourbon is quite noticeable.

Medium bodied with a very smooth texture that approaches creamy. Below normal carbonation with just a bit of effervescence in the finish.

The flavor profile is World Class. It is intense, richly complex and balanced to perfection. Simply, it is a brewer's masterpiece. It begins with a semi sweet chocolate over a mild coffee background. The middle produces a subtle bitterness comprised of dark chocolate, roast and coffee over a sweet background with rich malt notes. As the middle fades, coffee achieves its most prominent flavor aspect over declining chocolate notes and an ascending bourbon background. As the finish begins, vanilla and oak notes make a short appearance. The finish is a slow fade of coffee and roast bitterness over a rich sweetness that is both malt and chocolate in nature. The only trace of alcohol is the nice light burn at the back of the throat.

Batch # 36 ABV = 12.4 % . Very nice Imperial stout brewed with Cocoa Nibs, coffee , aged in whiskey Barrels !!! This is a great stout coffee forward with smooth cocoa dark flavor . Just got better as , I drank it over 2 hours & the last sip was the best !! Wow I will look for more of this A.S.A.P.!! Epic , very well done great job !! Thanks for brewing A Top A++ Beer that will age well with time !! Love this beer !!! WOW !!!

Spit-shined boot black with a thin coating of dense tan head.

Has a well-focused aroma consisting of dark chocolate, coffee and molasses.

Quite smooth and creamy up front with a hit of coffee and chocolate following. Other notes of grain, pine, caramel and plum float in the middle. Has a touch of grind residue in the finish that serves to make it that much more authentic.

Has a big body of course, but carries its weight and hold its alcohol well.

This is how it ought to be.

Medium bodied RIS, but were it really shines though is the medium-light roast coffee beans and the nibs. It is a great blend with the right balance of the two without requiring a milk stout or being overtly sweet.

Superb imperial stout. Heavy on chocolate and coffee tones without overpowering alcohol forward. Very well balanced for such high ABV. Batch #35 is 12.4% ABV

Shared in red solo cups under the shelter on a beautiful Thursday. Opaque black with a thin tan head. Hard to tell much else. Aroma is awesome, cocoa powder, coffee, dark roast, a bit of vanilla. Taste is good but less of a superstar compared to the nose. There’s whisky heat, cocoa and roasted malt sweetness, and coffee bitterness. Medium body, oily texture, moderate carbonation, some heat and bitterness on the finish.

Batch #36. 12.4% ABV
From everything I've read this beer varies greatly in ABV and ratings from batch to batch. I was lucky to come across several bottles of this 2013 brew and absolutely find it is one of my favorite coffee Imperial Stouts.
Look is black as night with a bit of lacing as I let it sit in my tulip glass.
Smell is amazing with tons of coffee and chocolate mixing with a bit of oakiness as well.
Taste follows the nose with delicious hits of coffee and chocolate and bourbon barrel with each warming taste. Extremely smooth and drinkable for it's ABV.
I've never tried any other batch but this one is a total winner!

Served at 55, very dark brown with thin mocha colored head, smell is not really there at first but opens up after about fifteen minutes, cocoa nibs make the first impression, start to get the other flavors as it warms, don't get much coffee, whiskey really hits toward the end, pleasant hot finish, body is thin for my tastes but overall very nice brew.

almost no head despite pouring it like I was having angry makeup sex with a stubborn ketchup bottle

Initially smells mostly like roasted coffee with whiskey/alcohol next and sweet stout smells last

For taste I get the nice roasty base stout first then start tasting mild additions of coffee cocoa and whiskey

mouth feel is pretty good and complements the brew very nicely.. a little heavier with a little more soft carb may have upped the rating

overall if you have never tried this beer expect a nice well balanced stout with no overly strong or offensive flavors.. to spell it out a nice base stout complemented by mild whiskey coffee and cocoa that is quire smooth for .6 abv
