This was brewed in SLC, # 2072 then some numbers I can't read...

Pours ebony with 2 fingers of mocha colored head. Great lacing & head retention, very bubbly...

S: Coffee, chocolate, a little bit of red pepper

T: All the nose is here up front; loads of coffee, a little caramel as well. Seems like a little barrel hiding in the background as this warms. Much coffee & chille heat, some more caramel sweetness, mocha as well. Finishes with heat, dryness, caramel, & much coffee...

MF: Medium bodied, warming, & firm carbonation. Thins as touch as this warms, still pretty nice...

Drinks so easy for the style, I liked it a little more on tap. This on the must purchase list the next time I'm back where this is feasible. LOVED this... (748 characters)

Release #37. Dark/brown almost black in color with slight ruby red hues around the rim of the glass. Beautiful oil like viscosity with only a few bubbles in the middle and spotty in nature lacing. Aroma of cocoa, bourbon, wood, vanilla, coffee and chocolate. Tastes of strong bittersweet chocolate, vanilla, some burnt sugar, hints of oak and bourbon plus coffee. Thick, creamy, and smooth on the palate with just a bit of bitterness and burn in the finish. I must say I found this to be one of the best Imperial Stouts I've had the chance to enjoy. Well done Epic! (572 characters)

Release 45, 10.9%. Pours pitch black. Normal head volume, outstanding retention and World Class lacing.

Rich complex nose of coffee, chocolate, roast and a bit of vanilla. As it warms, bourbon is quite noticeable.

Medium bodied with a very smooth texture that approaches creamy. Below normal carbonation with just a bit of effervescence in the finish.

The flavor profile is World Class. It is intense, richly complex and balanced to perfection. Simply, it is a brewer's masterpiece. It begins with a semi sweet chocolate over a mild coffee background. The middle produces a subtle bitterness comprised of dark chocolate, roast and coffee over a sweet background with rich malt notes. As the middle fades, coffee achieves its most prominent flavor aspect over declining chocolate notes and an ascending bourbon background. As the finish begins, vanilla and oak notes make a short appearance. The finish is a slow fade of coffee and roast bitterness over a rich sweetness that is both malt and chocolate in nature. The only trace of alcohol is the nice light burn at the back of the throat. (1,103 characters)

Spit-shined boot black with a thin coating of dense tan head.

Has a well-focused aroma consisting of dark chocolate, coffee and molasses.

Quite smooth and creamy up front with a hit of coffee and chocolate following. Other notes of grain, pine, caramel and plum float in the middle. Has a touch of grind residue in the finish that serves to make it that much more authentic.

Has a big body of course, but carries its weight and hold its alcohol well.

This is how it ought to be. (486 characters)

Batch #41
Medium bodied RIS, but were it really shines though is the medium-light roast coffee beans and the nibs. It is a great blend with the right balance of the two without requiring a milk stout or being overtly sweet. (223 characters)

Shared in red solo cups under the shelter on a beautiful Thursday. Opaque black with a thin tan head. Hard to tell much else. Aroma is awesome, cocoa powder, coffee, dark roast, a bit of vanilla. Taste is good but less of a superstar compared to the nose. There’s whisky heat, cocoa and roasted malt sweetness, and coffee bitterness. Medium body, oily texture, moderate carbonation, some heat and bitterness on the finish. (424 characters)

A - no light can penetrate, dark deep black, thin tan creamy head
S- rich deep coa-coa, a hint of whisky, bitter chocolate,
Slightly roasty
T- stays true to the smell, very roasty, semi sweet chocolate, pleasant whisky aftertaste
M- rich and full creamy mouthfeel
O- this is a really good ba stout, love the whisky notes, lately this has been easy for me to find, think I'll find some more (391 characters)

Batch #36. 12.4% ABV
From everything I've read this beer varies greatly in ABV and ratings from batch to batch. I was lucky to come across several bottles of this 2013 brew and absolutely find it is one of my favorite coffee Imperial Stouts.
Look is black as night with a bit of lacing as I let it sit in my tulip glass.
Smell is amazing with tons of coffee and chocolate mixing with a bit of oakiness as well.
Taste follows the nose with delicious hits of coffee and chocolate and bourbon barrel with each warming taste. Extremely smooth and drinkable for it's ABV.
I've never tried any other batch but this one is a total winner! (631 characters)

Served at 55, very dark brown with thin mocha colored head, smell is not really there at first but opens up after about fifteen minutes, cocoa nibs make the first impression, start to get the other flavors as it warms, don't get much coffee, whiskey really hits toward the end, pleasant hot finish, body is thin for my tastes but overall very nice brew. (353 characters)

almost no head despite pouring it like I was having angry makeup sex with a stubborn ketchup bottle

Initially smells mostly like roasted coffee with whiskey/alcohol next and sweet stout smells last

For taste I get the nice roasty base stout first then start tasting mild additions of coffee cocoa and whiskey

mouth feel is pretty good and complements the brew very nicely.. a little heavier with a little more soft carb may have upped the rating

overall if you have never tried this beer expect a nice well balanced stout with no overly strong or offensive flavors.. to spell it out a nice base stout complemented by mild whiskey coffee and cocoa that is quire smooth for .6 abv (683 characters)

Tried this one on tap and had to buy a bomber of it...great imp stout! It hits all the classic notes...coffee, chocolate, hint of bourbon and booziness but what stood out to me was the mouthfeel...it's unbelievably drinkable for such a big stout. The flavors meld so nicely that makes this thing an incredible brew (316 characters)

God this is a good beer. Quality for sure. I need to hoard up a few more before they disappear again! Although the coffee might fade. Jesus this Baptist is bad and in a good way.

Appearance: Black as night if poured aggressively the head does rise significantly with a nice caramel colored head.

Aroma: Coffee, bourbon some chocolate but not too much of any of those things. It all melds into a perfect balance of bliss. For sure one of the best smelling beers in this category I have ever had!

Taste: Amazing, not boozy at all for the abv. The bourbon shines just enough but does not overpower the coffee or the chocolate. The malts balance everything else out in harmony. Its a very well made beer. Man, it really is so good. The mouthfeel is spot on as well. Very velvety and like drinking a chocolate milkshake with some coffee and bourbon in it! Amazing beer and very well done. Warning: There is coffee in this beer and you can taste it, if you are not a coffee fan you won't like this beer. I do! Its not overpowering and will likely settle even more as time passes but overall this is a very well made beer.

Overall: Amazing, I would buy again. This was release 45 for those counting. (1,198 characters)

Big thanks to @tbadiuk for the bottle. A beauty, dark black with a thick mocha head and decent lacing. The nose and taste are big boasting lots of chocolate, espresso, roasted malts, some boozy notes. Lower in carbonation, but not to a fault, so the beer is smooth, rich and creamy. Overall, this is a delious beer with an amazing note! (338 characters)

Poured from a Beer Growler growler into a bulbous wine glass.

A - Jet black, half finger that moves quickly to a thin lace. Good lace retention.

S - Cocoa and chocolate, some burnt wood, smoke.

T - Follows the nose, bitteness ensues. Not picking up much whiskey. Some vanilla, coffee more prevalent.

M - Carbonation is medium, moving to low as it warms. Sits heavy, the bitterness makes it finish dry.

O - Serve closer to room temp to reduce some of the bitterness. Definitely a winter slow sipper. (510 characters)

Bomber. Batch #37. First impression is that it smells like bourbon county coffe. Well as much coffee, maybe not as much bourbon. But as close as it gets to a perfect coffee stout. Taste, although still good, is a bit of a letdown. Mild chocolate, sweet bourbon, coffee (which worked much better on the aroma) and bitter vanilla. Average to maybe on the tho side for such a big beer. (382 characters)

Draft, taster glass

A – Very deep brown to lighter black. Seems pretty clear. Tan head, fairly low retention.

S – Strong coffee aroma, hard to find much else here. A bit of vanilla and a touch oak, molasses.

T – Strong espresso, a touch of vanilla, some sweet molasses. A nice touch of bitterness, seems to be from the roasted malts.

M – Residual sweetness with a nice roasty bite. Light to moderate carbonation.

O – Prominent coffee and dark malts with lots of barrel character. This beer seems to be exactly what it wants to be. (569 characters)

Poured into a Duvel snifter glass.

A - 4.75 - Poured an oily, pitch black color. Formed a nice finger and a half of very dark brown colored head. Low head potential, great head retention. Nice thick whisps of lacing left on the walls of the glass.
S - 3.75 - Tons of roasty coffee, little traces of alcohol, but the nose is primarily dominated by coffee.
T - 4.25 - Sweet cream upfront with an EXTREMELY distant note of butterscotch, possibly imparted by the whiskey barrels. Lots of dark chocolate and coffee which mingle together creating a nice bittersweet mocha flavor. The upfront sweet cream is balanced perfectly by the bittersweet finish. Would have liked a little more whiskey taste imparted by the barrel.
F - 4.75 - Super rich and thick, very creamy mouthfeel.
O - 4.50 - Definitely an A imperial stout, one of the better ones I've had in a long time. Stuff is a bit uncommon, but if you can get your hands on it and are a fan of the style, I highly recommend buy a couple to set back and age! (1,005 characters)

This is one big beer in terms of taste, feel, and effect! Poured black as black can be and thick with minimal head. The 11.7%abv wasn't hidden at all and smacked you with each swig. Notes of roasted cocoa beans, dark chocolate and vanilla(?) were there along with the alcohol. As it got warmer in the glass, the bite got bolder. All in all, I enjoyed this bad boy from the folks at Epic, just glad I was safely at home as this one easily brought out the drunkard in me:) (470 characters)

22 ounce into a snifter, release #40, 11.5%, maybe batch 1977 bottled 10/13/2014.

Pours dark, no head but lacing on the sides while drinking. Smells oaky, vanilla, buttery (?). Whatever, smells really nice. Tastes of vanilla, whiskey, some oak. Get some coffee on the back end. This is beautifully blended. Really smooth drinking, almost creamy.

First beer from Epic and it's a big winner. Can't get this where I live, wish I would have bought a second. Don't know if all the releases are this good, but you should buy it if you see it. (546 characters)

Appearance- Very dark brew with a tawny head.

Smell- Primarily bourbon sweetness.

Taste- Surprisingly very little bourbon flavor, it only makes an appearance in the nose. Heavy roast is the majority of the flavor coming through here. Chocolate and hazelnuts... Reminiscent of Nutella. Notes of coffee and cola round out the finish, but after drinking BCBS or Parabola this seems like a medium bodied beer.

Feel- Very creamy and smooth. Not harsh in the least.

Overall- A unique bourbon barrel offering, good but not one of my favorites. (540 characters)

Draft, at the Aces and Ales, Las Vegas, poured into a goblet

Appearance: Pours a beautiful, completely opaque, pitch-black color with a half of a finger of chocolate-colored head that dissolved away into a thin lacing of foam that partially covered the top of the beer.

Aroma: Tons of roasted malt up front, imparting notes of freshly toasted pumpernickel bread, followed by some dark chocolate aromas, caramel and brown sugar. Rich.

Taste: Strong flavors of roasted malt up front, imparting notes of freshly toasted pumpernickel bread, a touch of freshly roasted coffee and smoke, followed by some dark chocolate-like bitterness, dark molasses, brown sugar-like sweetness and a touch of star anise or licorice. Delicious!

Mouthfeel: Very chewy, very creamy and smooth, as there is no carbonation what-so-ever in this beer. With an ABV of 11.8%, there is a very pleasant alcohol warmth on the palate.

Overall: This is an excellent beer! I love the strong flavors of malt, dark chocolate and dark molasses/brown sugar-like sweetness as well as the creamy mouthfeel. Delicious! (1,090 characters)
