Release#22. 8.7 % abv... Picked this up a Coal Train Liquor in CO Springs less than a month ago...

Pours Orange/Caramel with beige head.

S: Breadyness, pears, caramel. Above average head retention & okay lacing

T: Dryness, pears, white grape, apple skins & a little brown bread. Leafy hops & a little bit of tannin as this warms, some toastyness as well, a little dry. Finishes slightly figgy, dry, with brown breadyness

MF: Medium bodied, slight carbonation

A pretty good take on the style, not upper tier by any means...

A nice beer for the last day of winter. Perhaps a bit thicker and less carbonated than some doppelbocks but very well done.. Would have again with no problem.

Bottle, batch 31:
Pours a nice brown, but pretty clear despite color. The head is off white doesn't build too high with a rough pour. However, the head lasts covering the surface throughout the taste.

The smell seems a bit strange to me. Initially I got wet cardboard more than I'd like or expect. After that I do get some dark rock-candy sweetness and maybe some cinnamon or ginger spiciness. I may have underrated this, but I was not a fan of the complete makeup of this smell.

The taste starts with a hint if lager taste, clean, lightly sweet grain taste. Quickly a dark bread flavor comes on, followed by a spice-bread like brown sugar sweetness. A bit of raisin taste brings some tartness, and the end taste could be noble hops, but also seems sort of rye in nature.

The carbonation seems to play a bit into the spicey flavors, but is about medium strength. The body is pretty full, and the tastes envelop the entire mouth.

Not knowing the style overly well, I waffled on taste a tad. This beer seems to have a little more dryness than I recall from Celebrator, and I'm not sure if that's too be expected. Either way, except for the nose, I thought this was a fine malty option for the rate occasion I might want one; it seems suited for the holidays, for instance.

Excellent, ridiculously underrated Doppelbock. I like it better than Weihenstephaner Korbinian or Spaten Optimator. Glowing dark amber, clear body with a creamy off-white head. Smells and tastes of toasted bread, malt and Doppelbock sweetness. Decadent, rich mouth feel with low-to-moderate carbonation. Packs quite a punch at 8.3% alc./vol. (2014 edition). A steal at $4.49 a bomber if you like Doppelbocks.
