Epic Brewing Company’s latest barrel-aged beer brings something new—wild yeast. This brew is a collaboration ale with Crooked Stave Artisan Brewing of Fort Collins, Colorado. Chad Yakobson, brewmaster/owner of Crooked Stave, is well known for his skill and knowledge in the brewing of sour and Brettanomyces driven beers. The beer was brewed at Epic by the two brewers. Kevin Crompton, Epic’s brewmaster, and Chad spent several weeks working on the recipe and selecting the proper Brett strains and barrels for the beer to morph from a golden Sasion into a Saison-Brett Golden Ale.

Deuce to pint glass. Looks good; murky-orange and carbonated. Smells good too; tart and fruity with Belgian undertones. Tastes just like it looks; a refreshing delight. Mouthfeel is good too. Overall, a good beer, especially for the style and price tag. (253 characters)

Poured into a large tulip glass a somewhat hazed lighter golden with a thinner than expected white head atop.Alot of tart green apple in the nose,a tinge spice with funk induced brett somewhat subdued wich didn't bother me.Again tart green apples play a big role on the palate with the funkiness being a little more assertive,a decent breadiness holds well thru the finish, the alcohol lends just a little sweet zip.Not bad,it's not as funky as many of the farmhouse brett in fused styles, but it's not overly complex either. (524 characters)

A pretty golden pale straw. Smells deeply of fruit - golden apple and pear. A lot of funk and some hints of Chardonnay. Crisp to start with an acidic tang. The mid is a plump socket of sweet pear. The golden ale makes itself known in the back third, rounding the brew into a highly drinkable package. Mouthfeel is a bit thicker than expected, though not overly so. Good collab.

22oz bottle, release #1. Pours a hazy yellow with a smallish white head that goes to a thin film that leaves some lacing. It has quite a few floaties.

The aroma is floral brett and some slightly metallic overripe fruits and some funk.

The flavor is some fruity apple champagne with brett notes and some funk with a bit of bitterness in the dry finish. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with smooth carbonation.

Overall, I recall this being a much better brett beer when I had it a couple of months ago. Either this bottle is different or it isn't aging well for my tastes. A lot more sediment this time around too. (614 characters)

Thanks to bu11zeye for sharing this bottle.

The beer pours a yellow color with a white head. The aroma has a good bit of brett in it, as well as some lacto notes, which are complimented by the wheat and lemon characteristics. The flavor has quite a bit of brett and leathery funk it in, with some wheat and a little bit of green pepper and Belgian yeast. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation. A very odd beer, but one I found pretty enjoyable. (447 characters)

A: Pours hazy straw gold with a 1” white foam collar that descends to ¼” and leaves light lace.
S: Barnyard nose with over ripe fruit, some wine notes, citrus, and a faint banana.
T: A funky, sour fruity palate with spicy herbal notes, lemon, some orange hints, a dash of pepper and traces of oak with a dry, tart finish.
M: the beer has the distinctive Brett texture – refreshing, very fine soft carbonation, medium light body.
O: This is a refreshing saison with a big Brett and wine character. (506 characters)

Poured a hazy yellowish orange with a thin white head that dissipated quickly leaving no lacing. Scents of apricot, barnyard like funk, and sour notes. Flavor is pronounced sour notes, some fruity (green grape) notes, a hit of lemon, light hints of pale malt and a dry, white wine-like finish. Mouthfeel is light and crisp with a medium carbonation level. An excellent brett beer, with deep sour notes and a good degree of complexity on the taste and a bit less complex, but still excellent, scent. A very good beer that I'd try again. (535 characters)

Big brett aroma, saison brett. Odd spider lacing. Funk aroma, a sour edge. Yellow bodied. Boozy smell in the finish, bigger than the listed abv. A pleasant drinkable sourness.
Bottle from recent US trip.A recommended try for funk and saison fans. A good and unique Brett. (271 characters)

A - Pours a clear golden color, very limited head.
S - Aroma is yeasty with lemon.
T - Flavor is yeast, just a little sour, others suggest alcohol in the finish but I do not. almost champagne like.
M - As expected, crisp, dry and thin with a lot of carbonation.
O - I'm not an expert on Saisons but this one seems a little different. Perhaps it's the Brett, or the wine barrel aging. I agree it's good cold and it was so good I never really let it warm up. This is not a sour beer, it's a farmhouse ale and if you enjoy that style you should give this a try. Glad I did. (572 characters)
