Notes/Commercial Description:
Epic Brewing Company’s latest barrel-aged beer brings something new—wild yeast. This brew is a collaboration ale with Crooked Stave Artisan Brewing of Fort Collins, Colorado. Chad Yakobson, brewmaster/owner of Crooked Stave, is well known for his skill and knowledge in the brewing of sour and Brettanomyces driven beers. The beer was brewed at Epic by the two brewers. Kevin Crompton, Epic’s brewmaster, and Chad spent several weeks working on the recipe and selecting the proper Brett strains and barrels for the beer to morph from a golden Sasion into a Saison-Brett Golden Ale.

Attractive pale golden in the Brugs chalice with a modest mustache of foam. Appealing spritzy mouthfeel but light in body. Release #2 is 9.5% ABV.

Flavors of apple and pear skins with a touch of sweetness and honey fragrance. I think this is one of the better varieties of Brett-infused brewing. It includes the flavor and dry funk without submerging the fruity Saison character. Actually this reminds me of a French cider, but seriously amped up. Dry at the end, but fortunately not as intense as many Belgians.

Another good example of Epic's brews that include restraint among their virtues.I think this would stand up to most of the Belgian breweries in a blind taste test. From the 22 oz bottle purchased at Holiday Wine Cellar in Escondido.

The beer pours a brilliantly clear golden yellow with a hint of amber. The frothy white head quickly subsides to a thick collar. Strong flavor from the Brettanomyces. The nose has an earthy mustiness with cider apple and pear fruit notes. Very inviting.

The taste is slightly acidic and tart. Begins with a hint of fruity sweetness of apples, but quickly moves to a bone dry crisp tart finish. Very effervescent carbonation. The strong carbonation seems to make the beer even more dry and acidic. Very interesting beer. The flavor does not quite reach the heights of complexity as the scent. I would enjoy having this again, yet I imagine it will soon be hard to find.
