Notes/Commercial Description:
Epic Brewing Company’s latest barrel-aged beer brings something new—wild yeast. This brew is a collaboration ale with Crooked Stave Artisan Brewing of Fort Collins, Colorado. Chad Yakobson, brewmaster/owner of Crooked Stave, is well known for his skill and knowledge in the brewing of sour and Brettanomyces driven beers. The beer was brewed at Epic by the two brewers. Kevin Crompton, Epic’s brewmaster, and Chad spent several weeks working on the recipe and selecting the proper Brett strains and barrels for the beer to morph from a golden Sasion into a Saison-Brett Golden Ale.

Thanks to Cam for sharing this bomber last night. This was labeled as Release #4 / 9.1% ABV.

Appearance - This pours a light straw yellow with a white head. Retention is great, some lace left too.

Smell - Good brett and wine presence brings to mind flavors of lemon lime, floral, tart grapes, oak, light funk and some mead-like sweetness. Pretty aromatic, perfumey.

Taste - A little more tartness here, the wine barrel also takes over a bit. Mix of tart+sweet wine grapes, earthy farm yeast, bretty funky fruit, oak barrel.

Mouthfeel - Zesty carbonation, decent body, seems a little on the boozy side but it may be just wine. Very dry finish.

Overall - The wine barrel brings some great flavors, also overtakes the rest of the beer a bit but a pretty nice and unique mix of wine/brett/saison flavors.

A- Bomber split for a tasting pours with a slightly hazy golden body. A white head builds to over one finger with a frothy consistency and pretty good retention. Medium ring leaves a huge sheet at first with spots and drizzle.

S- Quite Brett ridden here with a funky fruity mix bringing notes of barnyard, must, big vinous fruits from the barrels, white grapes, yeast spice and straw.

T- Wine really breaks out to the forefront here with semi sweet white grapes and apple coming to mind. Musty barnyard, straw and cherry pits round it out with a Belgian yeast spice and slight oak. A lot of wine, very distinct.

MF- Medium bodied with a texture between creamy and foamy, smooth. Carbonation is pretty high with a vinous tart finish. Bitterness grips the palate somehow seems dry and sweet at the same time.

Wine really shows up massive with time and grapes dominate with a nice Brett Saison character underneath. I like parts of this but I think having more than half of the bomber would be fatiguing due to the wine domination. This was a fairly tough beer to rate for me, at times I loved it and at times I thought there was flavor clashing. Would I have it again, most likely.

A juicy lemon grass, tropic fruit flavored sasion, with little dryness. A light frunky bret note on the finish.

A - Pours a golden yellow with a two-finger foamy white head. The head dissapates quickly leaving lots of spotty lacing.

S - Aromas of lemon, hay, and Brett funkiness.

T - The flavors follow the aroma: green apples, lemon, brett funkiness, and white wine. The finish has a light alcohol burn.

M - Light bodied with high carbonation. Mouthfeel is very crisp with a dry finish.

O - This is a dangerously drinkable beer at 9.3%. Very crisp and refreshing.
