We took our double gold medal winning Brainless Belgian, added cherry puree and aged it in French Chardonnay casks for a secondary fermentation in the barrels. Pours a beautiful deep ruby color with a medium white head. A nice nose of sweet cherries, Belgian malts, and barrel aging.

Pours a translucent dark pink with a medium head that dissipates quickly.
Low to Medium effervescence.
Slight smell of sweet cherries.
Tastes initially of lightly sweetened carbonated cherries. A “wine”after taste mixes with the malts on the back end where the high ABV of 9.7 comes out.
Easy to drink but leaves a dry mouth feel (Imagine drinking a decent glass of wine).

This is one of our favorite beers. We always keep one in the fridge. High ABV and 22oz per bottles makes it an ideal dinner beer to share with someone. Can sneak up on you so use caution if enjoying it while out. The French oak barrels gives a fantastic color and a very unique flavor. This is a beer you could have at a decent restaurant and not feel low class for drinking a beer.

Overall it’s a great beer in both appearance and taste. It’s not sweet thanks to the ABV and the malts but the cherries do come through at the right moment up front. Very easy to drink and pairs with just about anything.

$ 12 (Including tax)/22 oz capped bottle ($ 0.545/oz) from Franklin Beer, Franklin, PA.
“Release #03 9.7% ALC/VOL” stamped on label but no date, stored at 42 degrees and served at 54 degrees in a hand-washed and hand-dried Jester King snifter.
Appearance – 3.5.
Body – Copper-red, translucent with chill haze which disappears as the temperature rises to 51 degrees, slight effervescence.
Head – None. A fizzy head was present while pouring but disappeared as the pour ended, leaving neither ring nor layer.
Lacing – None.
First pour – Pink, hazy.
Aroma – 3.75 - Weak cherry. As it warms both malt and alcohol appear. No hops in the aroma.
Flavor – 3.5 – Begins as generic cherry cough syrup with the flavor becoming more malty at the middle. The alcohol is not directly present in the taste but makes its presence known in the slight gastric warming. While hops are not directly present in the taste, there is a bit of syrup-cutting bitterness which nicely offsets the cherry sweetness. No diacetyl, no dimethylsulfide.
Palate – 3.25 - Medium, slightly syrupy, lively carbonation.
Impression and summation – 3.5 – The appearance of this brew is good overall, with the transparent redness enticing, but is held back by the fizziness and lack of head and lacing. The aroma is an interesting mixture of cherry and malt with just a whiff of alcohol. The whiff of alcohol is not present in the taste – you’ll have to wait for its next appearance in the gastric warming. The lower viscosity certainly helps the overall impression, making this a little less like cherry cough syrup.

Reddish pour with some serious cherry flavor and taste. Love the Belgian yeast notes and how they add some bready notes. I loved this beer and it reminded me a bit of Ommegang Three Philosophers.

Raspberry puree stickiness in mouthfeel, a bit of spritz, thin middle, satisfying finish. Much more character needed here; a rather faceless, anonymous beer. The only thing Belgian about this brew is that it is tasty with the waffles of the same name.

L - poured from a bomber, beautiful ruby red color with a fizzy white head that dissipates quickly leaving just a thin layer of white bubbles. Looks beautiful. Love the red color. 4.5

S - Nothing special about the smell. Belgian malt, wheat, a hit of cherry on the nose. 3.25

T - This is the biggest let down of the beer for me. Taste is foremost Belgian malt, yeast, wheat. Then there is a subtle cherry that surrounds the malt, but leaves me wanting more. The finish delivers a bit of acidity, wine tannins, and wood, but none of which seem to positively add to the taste of the beer. There is something here in all of the components that just doesn't work. 3.25

F - mouthfeel is light with a fair bit of bubbly carbonation that is just the slightest bit harsh on the tongue, but it works very well with the light malts and acidic fruity flavors. 4.5

O - not the greatest offering from Epic. One can pick out all of the things they were going for in this beer when drinking it, but somehow, it just doesn't all come together.

Pours a clear crisp effervescent orange color. A momentary fizzy white head is noted that dissipates almost instantly. Looks more like carbonated soda.

Smell has aromas of yeast, tart cherries, and some wheat.

Taste is a slightly tart yeasty flavor up front. Lots of wheat malts. There is just something odd about the flavor that I can't put my finger on. Maybe like bad cough syrup? Either way, I'd never drink this again. The flavors just don't really work for me.

Feel is very carbonated, light, easy drinking for the ABV.

Overall its an interesting concept that just doesn't quite come together. It ends up tasting more like a very carbonated yeasty cherry cough syrup than anything.
