Transcribed from notes dtd F, 29 Oct 2010.
A thin, soapy, off-white head that disappeared like a magic trick. Color was a cloudy orangish-yellow, not unlike fresh-squeezed grapefruit juice. Nose was VERY hoppy, speaking of grapefruit. The notes/cheat sheet read “[d]ry hopped with Cluster & Chinook.” Yes! The mouthfeel was as creamy as it could possibly be and the taste was as hoppy as I had experienced in a while. This last is testament to my bizarre CANQuest ™ with its preponderance of AALs. Finish was initially hoppy but the extreme finish evidenced the powerful black pepper flavor inherent with rye. Literally breathtaking! Trick or Treat time. Bring on the little devils.

On cask at the General Sutter. My intro to Barrier.
A: The IPA is a golden-hued copper color, hazed over. A small head insulates the ale.
S: The nose is a blend of hops and rye and grains. Hops aren't too strong, nor does the rye lay waste to scene. Balance is the key.
T: Rye and citrus hops set the stage. The hops, strong as they start off, have a citrusy and soapy flavor. They aren't overpowering, just present with a sweet bitterness. The rye and barley are bready with a dash of spiciness. Balance is the key, the lynchpin that holds the ale together.
M: Plenty of hops with a strong maltintess, rye and grapefruit pairing together. My first Barrier beer and I'm a fan.
D: Plenty drinkable, what's there not to like when grapefruity hops and rye come together?

Poured a murky bright copper hue with a finger and a half foamy white head. There was good retention and sticky lacing.
The smell featured a juicy orange and super peppery hop.
The taste was clearly hop driven with layers of spicy white peppery hop, bitter grapefruit and secondary rye spice.
The mouthfeel was a bit thin for the style.
Overall an enjoyable spicy hop bomb. Needs a bit of tweaking - perhaps deepening the malt bill as it is a bit fomented-like in body.

Poured a cloudy amber with a nice creamy head.
The smell was light and bready.
The flavor is very bready and malty with a light bit of rye spices. There is a nice level of bitterness but is lacking in the dry hopping side, especially for something with IPA on the label.
The mouthfeel is nice crisp with a bit of dryness.
A very interesting beer, heavy on the Rye, a bit light on the hops, but a big improvement over some of the past Sierra Seasonals.

Another gem from Barrier, Evan, you rock! We stopped by Barrier on a Saturday and how often do you have the opportunity to sit down and chat with the brewer himself? Way cool.
A - Pours a hazy light amber/orange color with an ultra thin, white lacing head and light carbonation.
S - Has a grassy, earthy pungency with a subdued citrus aroma, light crackery malt, and some light rye in the nose.
T - Hops are very forward in this beer...I really like that. Starts with an interesting rye taste up front and some sweet citrus tang followed with sweet crackery malt. Very early on in the sip there's a big tidal wave of bitter grapefruit that rides all the way to the finish line. The malt does a nice job of holding the fort down throughout and emerges along the sides of the tongue while the bitter waves roll over the top and down the middle. There's a metallic orange coating left in the mouth with a lingering grapefruit bitterness.
M - Medium body with a dry finish.
D - Runs high!
I really wish we lived closer to Long Island, Barrier would be a regular weekend run for me.

Very nice and balanced. Pours a bright copper color with great clarity and carbonation. Two finger white head fades fast and leaves thin sea foma walls.
The aroma has some evergreen elements with floral and slight citrus notes. Some spicy ryte features on a caramel whiff and deep toffee notes.
Flavor is impressive in its balance of spicy rye, caramel malt balanced flavors, some notes of vanilla and spice, and some good doses of toffee in the backgroud. Herbal touches.
Very elegant but simple. Crisp edge on a rather light body. Malty toasted edges with some sweet notes. Overall, very well balanced and drinkable.

Appearance: copper, bright clarity, thin layer of tight-beaded foam, good head retention
Aroma: spicy rye with hints of toffee and woodsy hops
Flavor: upfront malt sweetness with a good dose of rye, but a bracing hop bitterness kicks in pretty quickly to leave a fairly dry finish; notes of toffee and hops in the aftertaste
Mouthfeel: medium body, zesty carbonation, crisp
Other comments: To me, you can never put too much rye in a beer. They didn't. Having said that, this is a damn fine RIPA.

Had on-tap at Sunswick 35/35 in Astoria, NY on 2/7/12.
Review taken from notes.
This beer pours a nice golden amber color. There is about a finger of slightly off-white head resting on top. The head has good retention, and it leaves some scattered lace behind on the glass. The nose has some caramel malts and a good amount of piney hops. There are also some aromas of spicy rye, some fruitiness, and citrus. The taste follows the nose pretty well. it starts off with some caramel sweetness and rye spiciness. Then there is a nice piney hop bite that comes through. Also, there are some flavors of citrus, rye, caramel, and some other fruitiness. The finish leaves some lingering citrus and hop bitterness behind on the palate. This has a medium body and good carbonation. It goes down easy and has a pretty smooth feel to it. There is some sweetness at the start, which is cut by a nice piney hop bite. There is also some rye spiciness her. The drinkability is good. It has nice flavor and goes down easily. I would have no problem having a few pints of this one. Overall, I think it is a good beer, and a good representation of the style. I recommend trying this out, it's a pretty solid beer. I would buy it again.

Half of this glass is a kicked keg. The other half is fresh. The whole thing is awesome.
Hazy amber golden with a small froth that dissipates but sticks around as lacing. Aromas are huge citruses. Flavors are citrus on a malt backbone. Bitter and slightly floral, maybe even pine at the back. Basically this is a hophead's dream. The malt just carries everything else. Medium mouth and nice bitter residuals. This is a great beer!

From the taps at Bierkraft..It pours a sticky looking orange that clings with a touching embrace to the sheer walls of the glass. An everlasting head a centimeter in height. Unfiltered and impenetrable.
Spicy rye is easily evident, along with some pine and floral notes. A little citrus in the background.
Starts slightly malty, turning into a rye domination before giving way to the unrelenting lack of mercy the hops show. Finishes dry, but it's not extremely bitter. Great combination of flavors here.

growler filled on 1/8/11
guys at the brewery were awesome! sampled about 6 different brews, gave us the low down on the brewery, and had the latest issue of BA on their desk. cheers.
a- pours a deep amber body with about 2 fingers of clean white head that fade quickly. very nice lacing throughout.
s- smells like a big fresh ipa should. very reminiscent of flower power ipa but a little less citrus and a little bit more pine/grass. nice caramel backdrop. definitely what a hophead would be looking for.
t- starts and finishes with ample hop bitterness (70ibu), pine and lemon zest, middle is smoothed out with some sweet malt flavor. pretty complex taste for <7% ABV. finishes pretty dry too which is always a plus
m- carbonation was just about where it should be, a little bit thin on the finish but wasn't really expecting much more from a 6.4% IPA, would go so far to say i was very pleasantly surprised
d- very sessionable, paired great with a jets playoff victory, will need another fill asap.
can't say enough good things about this local gem, Barrier's got to be on the radar for anyone in the NYC/LI area!

Had the stout first but man I was glad I got a growler of this one. Poured nice and light amber orang with a little haze. Citrus nose. Spicy. Earthy. Real complex nose. Taste was outstanding. Genuine love from hops here. Nice and bitter without being annoying. Good texture. Mouthfeel bright and zesty. Great quencher. Loved all 64 ounces of this one. Super happy with this selection.
RUTHLESS AND DELICIOUS
