Dark brown with red tinge. Roasted earth, lite smoke, chalky cocoa. Whoa. Big burnt ends flavors, medium smoke and deep.

Draft poured into a tall champaign flute. Color is very dark brown--the afternoon sun sends a weak ray of red brown through the brew. One-finger tan head and very attractive lacing. Aroma is first malt and caramel, then floral hops. Flavor is medium roast malt/-not really dark roast, with caramel, some sweetness, a little bit of chocolate and a hint of coffee. The hops are balanced or understated, a bit more like what I think of a porter, or halfway between a porter and a stout. It is a bit delicate and gentle for a stout. Overall I think it is very good to outstanding. I'm very glad to have sampled it on-tap overlooking the Deschuttes River.

From 12/17/13 notes. Had a 16 oz. pour of this in a pint glass on cask at The Jeffrey in NYC.

a - Pours a deep brown color, almost black, with low carbonation evident and no real head. Looks alsmot flat, which I guess is to be expected from the cask.

s - Smells of roasted malts, dark chocolate, coffee, toasted malts, burnt malts, and milk chocolate. Nice nose, lots of chocolate, coffee, and roasted malts. Like it a lot.

t - Tastes of roasted malts, light dark chocolate, chalk, burnt malts, light coffee, and toasted malts. Taste is much lighter and alsmot seems watered down compare to the nose with much less chocolate and coffee. Decent but a big step down for me.

m - Light, thin, watery body and no carbonation. Way too thin for a stout, subpar.

o - Overall a decent beer with some promise in the nose, but the taste was a bit too light and the body was way too think. Would have liked it a little bit thicker; probably wouldn't revisit too often.
