Had this in cask.

A
It was labeled as a unfiltered black IPA but I don't think any amount of filtering would have made this a black IPA. Muddy brown at best. It also had alot of specs of something (yeast? grain?) floating in it. It did have a decent head to it.

S
citrusy hops. Thats it.

T
Very bitter and very hoppy. With some roasted malt flavor.

M
light body but a bit too acerbic to my tongue.

O
I wouldn't try this again from the same cask but I would like to see how this tastes in a year from now. Perhaps their recipe will change. It wouldn't win any beauty pagaents but the taste wasn't that bad.

On draft at the brewery.

Poured a jet black hue with a one finger foamy tan head. There was good retention and lacing.

The smell featured a resinous piney hop and roasted malt.

The taste offered an initial punch of vibrant pine with a secondary roasted malt, with the accompanying elements of charcoal and black coffee.

The mouthfeel was typical of the style.

Overall a very well made black ale.

Black with a creamy lingering head. Plenty of floral hops in the nose and on the tongue. Roastyness is there but subtle. Light and smooth with a bitter finish that combines hops and burnt malts. Easily the best Barrier beer I have tried. Possibly the best black ipa.

Ok something is wrong here. This was served to me as a black ipa but it was murky brown in color. Server said that is normal but I think there was too much yeast. Aroma confirmed it. Had a chalk like smell. Seemed way out of place. Hop aroma was there but not in front because it was overpowered. Then the taste was too. Chalky and bogged down by a roasted flavor. Really I was not enjoying this one at all. Was going to get a growler but glad I settled for a pint instead. Going to try different one if their brews.

Not a big fan of IPAs to start with but I was really not impressed. Very grassy smell and flavor that would not go away. Could not drink more than a few sips

Served in a pint glass on-tap at Jimmy's No. 43 on 4/22/2012

Poured a thick stormy black base with a coffee colored lacy head. The smell was full of piney hops with some coffee malt backbone. It tasted a bit less developed than it smelled, with a more faint hop presence. The carbonation was excellent, and the piney bursts of hops felt great. Overall an excellent black ipa.

On tap for the Barrier tap takeover at Bierkraft. Had a glass of the Oil City Black IPA. Dark murky brown with low carbonation. Definitely unfiltered.
I smell the roast, some coffee and pine, and the flowers of spring. Yes, spring is coming.
Tastes good, the roast and pine play nice, citrus is pretty subdued. Some flowery hops finish it out. It finishes pretty dry, good hop kick, only a slight bit of sweetness in the drink.
All in all, pretty solid effort, I'm always worried when I get that roast in there that the hops won't mesh, but this one did alright.
Good work, Barrier, keep the goodness coming.
