Served on-draught in Messyr's Maguire, in March 2011. Served in a generic pint glass. The beer was double-poured from the handpump.
A: A nice bubble show. One finger lovely head of nice tan colour with brilliant cream, and notably excellent retention. More promising already than their plain stout. Black colour.
Sm: Coffee and roast. Subtle.
T: Creamy open to body of roast, caramel, vanilla, and coffee. The coffee bleeds into the finish, which is a nice touch. Touches of cream lacing are present in the finish.
Mf: Nicely dry on the climax. Overall, this beer is too smooth and wet for the style.
Dr: Unfortunately, as with the plain stout, the whole beer has an overtone of a wretchedly awful metallic taste. It makes me think something is wrong with the tap. I wouldn't have reviewed it, except that some of their other beers (from the same tap array, no less) do not have this metallic abomination. Hopefully, if it is the case that the tap has a problem, they can get it sorted. No one I talked to seemed to notice it, leading me to believe it may be part of the beer, though I sincerely hope not. The beer is priced very fairly (4 Euro) for Dublin, but with a taste like this, I won't be ordering it again.
