This beer is retired; no longer brewed.

The brewery releases this special beer once a year, just in time for the holidays, and this “2013 vintage” has a slightly tweaked recipe that aims to accentuate the roasted pecan flavors even more. With many breweries releasing pumpkin beers and Oktoberfest styles this time of year, this brewery has taken a different approach, offering a refreshing alternative to an autumnal release.

Clown Shoes 2013 Genghis Pecan (pecan pie porter) bottled on 8/28/13 weighs in at 7% abv, there's something natural about their dark beers and porters. I'm glad to hear that they switched to brown sugar and roasted pecan additions and ditched the extract bullshit. The label has Genghis Khan chucking pecan pies at a flock of clown shoe wearing turkeys. It pours pitch black with a hint of brown highlights, dark khaki tan head forms thick leaves thin sporadic lacing down the sides of my glass. Aroma has dark roasted malts, hints of coffee, vegetal notes deep nuttiness, with some caramelized sugars. There's also a nice fruity sliced apple/grape flesh element amongst the dark roasted malt character, if you gave this to me blindly I highly doubt I would be screaming pecans, but I like the subtle element it plays within a really solid base beer. Slight nuances of pecan skins, roasted barley, hints of creamed coffee, a really complex slightly fruity ale, I'm engaged in the label, and the beer's concept and execution. What I'm perceiving as the lactose element must be the roasted pecans and brown sugar sweetness that just kicks this beer up another notch, not quite dessert but quite decadent and meant to be enjoyed after or before dinner. Hell, I'm thinking this is going to be the Thanksgiving beer this year...it just makes sense. Mouthfeel is smooth and creamy, rolls perfectly on the palate no off tones or harshness medium to full bodied on the palate with nothing but natural smooth rolling carbonation. Overall, I'm a fan and I will grab another bottle without hesitation.

There's a half-finger or so of tannish head on top of this robust-looking dark brown porter. It's got pretty good retention and some decent stick to the lace as well.
The main elements of this beer are appropriate, and in appropriate portions as well: strong notes mainly of roast and light char with a little tang in the finish. The question of where exactly the pecan comes in is an issue. That the pecan flavor is supposed to be accentuated makes me wonder how there was any detectable at all in earlier releases, as it's hardly noticeable whatsoever here. Still, it's a good porter and a strong base beer, but the main draw should be much stronger than it is.
This beer has the medium-full body it ought to and is lightly crisp. It's somewhat smooth, and brings some roasty dryness into the finish.
