Notes/Commercial Description:
Why are Miracle Mike and his dog, Bionic, being chased by many evil laser beam shooting cupcakes and two giant layer cake mother ships? Because we're straight lunatic fools? Well, maybe, but with a few brains cells remaining we managed to craft Space Cake double IPA, utilizing citrusy Mosaic hops and an immaculate West Coast style malt backbone. Dude... Chill out. Enjoy some Space Cake.

Pours a clear orange. White head and plenty of lace. Aroma of orange, mango, and melon.

In the taste, earthy and bitter, yet still tropical with grapefruit, pineapple and mango. A little booze and pale malt, perhaps toffee. Bright and hoppy, with a crisp medium bodied finish.

Overall, this is a good double ipa. Par for the course, at the very least.

I wonder if this will make me feel like that time I was in Amsterdam...?

A: Tangerine to medium orange/caramel. Hazy and tropical looking. Whipped cream like head supported by 2 fingers of micro-sized bubble. Persistent with exquisite lacing.

S: Lots of tropical fruit. Mango and orange work very well with the sweet malts. Nice pine and resin with grassy notes. Light peachiness and apricot as well.

M: Creamy but stiff feeling with a good amount of alcohol warmth. Pretty thick, sticky. The head clings to the lips on each sip and as it dissipates you get a nice popping sensation on the tip of the mouth. Medium carbonation, active carbonation, which leads to a nice dry sensation on the palate.

T/O: If you drink this too quickly your palate can become overloaded to only taste the pine and resins with the malt sweetness, tropical and fruit notes being lost. Has a pleasant citrus character, refreshing stone fruit aspect and a more savory mango puree as base. Grassy and dank throughout. Complexity of the hop flavor is outstanding, and for those fans of Mosaic this is a must have beer. Good malt toastiness compliments the high bitterness extremely well. Clean and easily recognizable flavors.

Wishing I bought a couple more of these, considering they were only $6 for a bomber. I picked up some peaches. Thinking this might pair well with a peach cobbler maybe, or pineapple cake.

I am a huge fan of IPA's. My fiancee has a maternal twin sister, so I consider myself a man who appreciates doubles. Now, this Clown Shoes brew can't wear a bikini, and leave me asking life questions, yet it does satisfy that need for the double. Pour and appearance similar to most. The smell, oh the smell, that's where this gets it going for me. Yeah, there's a hint of grapefruit, maybe a little apricot. Side story: I grew up a little poor, not starving, but enough to appreciate what I have. Being poor, dogs where a pet we couldn't afford. They cost too damn much to feed. I also lived most my younger years with my mother and older sister. So, what do poor women have to do with a beer review you may be asking? Cats, poor women love cats. And what do cats do for poor women? Well they piss all over the place, in case you didn't know. So I know cat piss and doubles. Space Cake immediately reminds me of those great muggy New England days of a low income apartment with no A/C and abundance of free willed felines with no regard to the sense of smell of the higher species. I'm not saying I enjoy the smell of cat piss, but it rings out with power in Space Cake. Cat piss, man. That being said, it ain't so bad, when you get the hop punch to your tongue. You embrace the smell, knowing that it is, like a poor childhood, the beginnings of an epic story with a great finish. One of the best double IPA's I look forward to enjoying for a long time, and if lucky, maybe with my fiancées sister....

The beer pours a dark, caramel-orange-amber with a fat pillowy head of creamy yellow colored, tiny bubbles. The head has some decent retention and leaves fluffy strings of lacing on the glass. In body the beer is crystal clean and clear, but with a darker hue adding a touch of opacity to the overall look. On the nose, this beer is beautifully full of character. Unripe blueberries, strawberry skin, watermelon, mangoes, slight pine needle and dank weed, as well as the edges of catty scents. The malt backbone is subtle and well integrated into the nose, allowing for this beer to be a fruity fiesta of hop scents. Gotta love those mosaic hops. On the tongue, the beer tastes fruity sweet up front, with a delicate bitterness that builds into a nice strong bitter finish. Subtle acidity dances around the edges of the palate, as well. In flavor, the beer begins as sweet strawberry, watermelon, and slight sweet lemon, this blooms into bready caramel dosed in tropical fruit with a strong shiver of mellow bitter pine and grapefruit pith. The finish is of bitter grass and soft aspirin, which nicely balances out the sweeter hop character. The aftertaste is of soft bitter pine with a nice sweet resiny sense and definite caramel coating. As it warms I start to sense sticky, fruity caramel pudding. In the mouth, the beer feels medium plus bodied with superb smoothness, and a middling carbonation fluffs the tongue with a decadent pillow. The mouthfeel is superbly soft and luxurious, gelling across the tongue like a pillow. Overall, I am a fan. This is my first venture into Clown Shoes hoppy offerings (surprisingly) and I really enjoyed it. The mouthfeel is nicely smooth, velvety, and luxurious, and unique for my venture into DIPA’s. A fine beer from Clown Shoes.
