Why are Miracle Mike and his dog, Bionic, being chased by many evil laser beam shooting cupcakes and two giant layer cake mother ships? Because we're straight lunatic fools? Well, maybe, but with a few brains cells remaining we managed to craft Space Cake double IPA, utilizing citrusy Mosaic hops and an immaculate West Coast style malt backbone. Dude... Chill out. Enjoy some Space Cake.

22oz bottle. More seemingly nonsensical comic fan-boy imagery on the label.

This beer pours a mostly clear, medium copper amber hue, with three fingers of puffy, loosely foamy, and bubbly off-white head, which leaves some sudsy streaky lace around the glass as it evenly subsides.

It smells of big tropical and domestic fruit - pineapple, blood orange, guava, kiwi, and mango - with an equally pungent leafy and resinous pine tree essence, some dense bready caramel malt, sticky toffee, and further herbal, grassy, and slightly perfumed hops. The taste is a little drawn back from all that, the malt ascending with its biscuity, bready, and grainy caramel sweetness, while the citrusy, piney and leafy hops quickly muscle out that robust tropical manna from the nose, and the herbal character gets (I almost said 'hops') into bed with the sneaky alcohol.

The carbonation is fairly active in its tightly swirling frothiness, the body a steady medium weight, and plainly smooth, both the acrid hops and bristling alcohol leaving a few permanent dents here. It finishes off-dry, sort of, as the piney, leafy, and herbal hops continue their unchallenged run of the table.

A well-wrought DIPA, one that draws you in with the big tropical, almost candied notes, and then drops the hammer with a straight up west coast bitter deluge of the forest floor and citrus grove ilk. Yup, this is much more of a regular IPA, taste-wise, one that does a bang-up, commensurate job of hiding the otherwise damning big ABV. Worthy as sin of checking out.

Purchased at Champagne's outside Detroit for $7.00 650ml bomber. Served at 4deg C in a draught glass

A- Opens well and pours a 1" high white thick creamy head that films out within a few minutes. Dark golden color and unfiltered

S- Oodles of hops. Sweet

T- Hop bomb and a nice one at that. Yup a bit sickly but it is a nice blend of high hop brew. Particularly like the C hop bombardment

M- Not that dry surprisingly

O- Very nice brew. This one has a malty and hoppy backbone that really stands out

Food Pairing

This wonderful big little IPA went well with........ Sloppy Joe's. Some ground beef, onion, green pepper and that can of mix and voilà! Don't like it often but every once in a while you get that craving.

22oz bottle into a tulip
no bottling dates

A: Crystal clear golden color with just over 1 fingers width of light tan colored head that dissipates down fairly quickly and leaves a few small patches of lacing. 4

S: Lots of sweetness, and quite boozy. Fairly big citrus rind, grapefruit, and some pine. Lots of malt. Smells like its past its prime, but still quite good. 4

T: Citrus rind, pine, bitterness. More hop forward then the nose implied, but solid malt backbone is there with some malty sweetness. A bit of booze. Tasty. 4

M/D: Full bodied, carbonation appropriately low, fairly smooth actually, booze is noticeable, drinkability is pretty good. 4

O: Overall, this was an enjoyable beer that I would have again. 4

I bought 2 bottles against my better judgement because I didn't see a bottled on date. Normally I would never buy an IPA that doesn't show a bottled on date, but I'd never seen this one around here and was eager to try it.

When I got home a poured a glass it appeared very flat. Smell was only sweetness, very little hops. Taste was terrible, flat and syrupy sweet. Then I checked the bottle again and saw a faint date printed in black ink on the dark brown bottle. Beer was bottled in Oct 2014, I purchased in late March of 2015.

Never again Clown Shoes!! I'll never buy another IPA from Clown Shoes until they CLEARLY mark the bottled on date on the label so it's readable in the store.

Bomber poured into a tulip. Another Mosaic bomb, cloudy orange amber with three fingers of persistent rich and foamy off-white head. Amazing head retention, just sits there like a dollop of thick cream. Huge fresh fruit aromas ... Guava, papaya, mango, tangerine, blueberry, orange, yellow grapefruit, nectarine. These are meld together on the palate to yield a Juicy Fruit gum effect. Is it almost too much of a good thing? Seriously, its sweet. More citrus on the nose and tropical fruit/nectarine on the palate. There is a resinous bitterness that saves the day over the course of multiple sips. Alcohol is prominent, particularly in the piney and herbal yet still somehow fruity finish. Malts are in the background, just a light butterscotch vibe. The candied peachiness cannot be escaped. Thick bodied, which adds to the sweet impression, with moderate carbonation. Is it getting hard to find a DIPA that does not showcase Mosaic lately? Probably should not complain, particularly when such a brew is done well. I do dig that almost rank, dank blueberry flavor. If fruity is your thing, this is your concoction. Its going down dangerously quickly. The cake in the name seems apt.

From a bomber bottled 5 wks ago
Poured to a shaker.
Dark amber, light head
Smell- Malty , slight yeast overtone
Taste- tips to the malty tide for a DPI
Feel, full mouth coating followed by good micro carbonation
Don't know if I would have it again, but its not bad.

In a snifter this beer was a clear gold color. There was a small head that left a smattering of lace.

Sweet malt aroma. Pine and earthy hops. No fruit. A bit on the timid side.

Caramel malt taste. Pine and earthy hops. Still no fruit. The taste was better than the aroma suggested.

Hoppy, malty. I missed the citrus.

Don't think I'd try this again.
