Excellent beer from Clown Shoes. Pours ruby red to deep brown in color with fine beaded foam that dissipates to nice lacing. Lot's of caramel in this one. Caramel and sweet chocolate chip cookies on the nose and a hint of coffee---medium roast. Great mouth feel with solid carbonation----tons of sweet crème brule style caramel and some coffee and sweet malt, same for after taste. This is an excellent beer for getting into a novices palate and expanding their horizons. Somewhat single flavored but more than solid and very enjoyable. Clown Shoes continues to impress.

appearance: Copper brown, a little hazy. Fairly thick tan head on the pour that mostly subsides.
smell: Smells like a caramel brown ale i guess. Fairly subtle, subdued i.e. not particularly rich. Pleasant enough.
taste: Much like the nose. Kudos....there's no weird artificial aftertaste....tastes like caramel though again, not particularly rich.
overall: nice enough. truth in advertising, this is indeed a caramel brown.

22 oz. bottle, with no apparent bottled on date present, but the local store just got bottles of this so I'm confident that it's fresh. "Brewed and bottled by Mercury Brewing Co." Brewed with 500 lbs of burnt caramel sounds amazing, so my expectations are pretty good.

Poured into a clear balloon snifter.

A - Pours a dark muddy caramel brown color, a deep red when held to the light. About a finger and a half of creamy fluffy mocha head. Lots of scattered spotty lacing. Looks pretty nice.

S - The nose is nice, but standard for the style - caramel / brown malts, earthy & herbal tea leaf like aroma, some molasses, mild notes of cream / lactose / vanilla. Earthy & nutty on the aroma.

T - Taste follows the aroma - it is nice, but standard for the style. Lightly bitter / roasty / charred tasting. And while caramel / brown malts are definitely a main player, burnt caramel is not the first thing that comes to mind. Herbal tea leaves, notes of chocolate, cherry, vanilla & brown sugar.

M - The feel is good; creamy and smooth. Moderate bitterness / roast on the palate, with medium carbonation.

Overall, it is about standard for the style, and the caramel isn't as ridiculously in your face as I was hoping, considering it boasts using 500 lbs of the stuff. Worth the try, but not a beer I would seek out again.

A: poured into a pint glass to a nice brown with some ruby hues topped by a half finger of light tan head that fades to a small mat and leaves no lacing
S: smells of caramel and toasted malt with a light raisin note
T: this beer tastes of caramel, caramel and more caramel with a slight toasted malt character and a slight weak coffee note. swallow is more caramel, a slight fruityness and a robust toasty malt flavor with a slight nuttyness
M: this beer seems to be on the heavier side of medium with prickly carbonation and a slightly refreshing finish that starts a little dry
O: Overall, not bad but a little one note. Fairly sweet from their addition of a lot of burnt caramel to this beer and it could have used some more bitterness for balance.

22oz bottle from Sprayberry Bottle Shop (Marietta, GA). 8.99. Bottled 4/10/14. Served in a Clown Shoes snifter.

Pours chestnut brown with a finger and a half beige head. A nice thin layer of retention leaves only tiny spots of lace.

Sure enough, aromas of burnt caramel dominate. Mild brown sugar, dulce de leche ice cream and vague roast malts.

Again in the flavor, plenty of burnt caramel up front. Toasted nuts, vague soft chocolate, brown sugar, molasses and toasted bread.

Light, just shy of medium body with moderate carbonation. Nutty, caramel and brown sugar finish.

While this is not Clown Shoes' best work in my opinion, they have successfully made a brown ale (not a style that I favor) that is pretty darn good. The sweetness of the caramel adds a pleasant element to the typical maltiness of the style.

This is a good/very good brown ale. A bit sweet, but overall solid. Pours a dark black and for a moment has carbonation bubbles that look like cola. The color turns brown, a reddish brown in the end. Interesting beer that I would revisit if offered, but will not be seeking it out.

Somehow a fairly cool rainy night in the middle of what seemed like summer was here, but then again it is New England, so this seemed like an apt beer.

Pours a brownish fizzy but a little creamy 1/2 finger rich head that sticks around fairly well, touch of lacing, very dark murky molasses brown color with the faintest light barely able to sneak through.

Nose is quite potent, biiig sweet candy malts, caramel and brown sugar all over, burnt caramel, creme brulee, toffee, sugar daddy, flan, a touch of a milky aroma like a brown sugar candy milk thing, even a little cake note... but with all those sweet candy aromas it doesn't actually smell like it's overwhelming sweet like a Southern Tier. Light nutty toffee, and a little fluffy nougat as well. Pretty much a big bottle of liquid candy.

taste comes on sweet, but not overly sweet, more candy all over, first up is the caramel as expected, with caramelized brown sugar as well, sugar daddy candy, touch of a nutty note, creme brulee, etc. Again a touch of a milky flavor again, candied milk and caramel sugar, also milk duds which is interesting, and even caramel cake icing and like caramel ice cream. A hitn of warming booze tries to poke it's head but fails with the big candy, until a bit of a spicy hop does come through, a mild bitterness but you get that spicy hop character in there. Finish is sticky and sweet, again not overly sweet thankfully, with more candy flavors lingering, caramel all over, touch of spicy hop, and a touch of warming booze.

Mouth is fuller bod, fairly thick and rich, a little creamy, fair syrupy feel too, lighter but decent carb, just a hint of warming booze.

Overall interesting, pretty much delivers what it promises, burn caramel, and brown ale-ish like notes, hops at least poke through, booze is about where it should be, thankfully not super sweet, although tons and tons of various candy flavors, hard to drink much of it.

This brew was poured from a bomber into generic chalices. It appeared a stormy tawny coloring, sporting a quickly dissipating eggnog colored head worth one finger’s height. Intermittent clouds of lacing were left around the glass, but these too quickly dripped away into Dali-esque malformations. A thick haze was present, but no sediment was noted. Carbonation appeared to be light. The aroma smelled very much like cooled wort, with heavy flow of steeped raw barley, oats, brown and caramel malts. This was balanced by light brown sugar granulations, singed smokiness, caramelized onions, plastic and medicinal phenols, browned apples, and grassy and citric hop pellets. The flavor came with more bittered malts of caramel and burnt brown varietals, soy sauce, sesame seeds, plum and black cherry fruitiness, flaked oats, grassy and sweetly nectary hops, high fructose corn syrup cloy, metallic and floury adjuncts, and raw molasses. The body was medium, and the carbonation was high. The mouth was left wet, with nothing more coming off a lackluster slurp and glug. The abv was appropriate, and the beer drank back only okay.

Overall, we were not very happy with this beer. Lately Clown Shoes has been on point, and we thought this would be a nice easy letdown to accompany the wedding-after Sunday brunch, but unfortunately we were wrong. The malts are more burnt than caramel, and this kills the flavor, blend, and allure of it right from the start. The recipe is otherwise overly formulaic, and seems unfinished and underdone with this gimmick of an inclusion.

22 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 4/10/2014. Pours hazy deep reddish brown color with a 2 finger dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of caramel, molasses, toast, brown bread, brown sugar, light chocolate, light roast, light nuttiness, raisin, prune, herbal, and toasted earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/roasted malt and burnt caramel notes; with solid strength. Taste of caramel, molasses, toast, brown bread, brown sugar, light chocolate, light nuttiness, light roast, raisin, prune, herbal, and toast/roasted earthiness. Light earthy hop and roast bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, molasses, toast, brown bread, brown sugar, light chocolate/roast/nuttiness, raisin, prune, herbal, and toast/roasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Nice balance and robustness of dark/roasted malt and burnt caramel flavors; with a good malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying sweetness after the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a smooth and fairly slick/bready mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with only a slight warming present after the finish. Overall this is a nice brown ale. Good balance and robustness of dark/roasted malt and burnt caramel flavors; and very smooth to sip on. A bit one dimensional, but nicely enjoyable.

A- poured to a tulip. Almost no head. Not a clear brown or deep dark brown. Hazy in a not so appealing fashion.

S- a surprising sour smell up front. Back end is a nice growing sweet deep caramel. A decent nut brown undertone.

T- the usual nutty yumminess of a brown ale is overwhelmed by the burnt part of this burnt caramel. The bitter burnt flavor overpowers the subtle sweetness of the caramel that tries to shine through. The taste was rather disappointing

M- IMO it's the best part of this beer. A light body and appropriate for the style. Decent carbonation tingles the tongue.

O- I love me some Clown Shoes and was really wanting to top off my Friday night dessert paired with a burnt caramel brown. I put this aside to finish my dessert paired with water.

Bottled 4/10/14. About 6 weeks old.

A: Pours a deep dark brown. Tall, fizzy and frothy light brown head. Head fades slowly with pretty good retention. Quite decent chunky lacing everywhere.

S: Typical brown ale around. Quite a bit of nutty, toasted bread. Pretzel-like at times. A little bit of caramel but it melds nicely.

T: Whoa. Big burst of caramel up front. Not necessarily a fully burnt caramel, but a toasted caramel. Toasted caramel drizzled over a thick, heavy bread. Lots of nuttiness, like a natural peanut butter. Toasted peanut butter and caramel sandwich? Get lots of sweetness in general, a honey-like sweetness at times too. Finish is grainy pretzels and toasted caramel.

M: Medium bodied, smooth and you can practically feel the syrupy caramel on your tongue between sips.

O: Pretty much what you'd expect. It's a nice brown ale with a toasted caramel overlay. Caramel is fairly strong but does not overpower. Lots of real brown ale characteristic to this one. I enjoyed it, it's a nice unique take on a brown ale.

After I drank about half the bottle I ended up pouring it out. Something about it I decided I didn't like as it got fully warm. Too sweet? Tiring to drink, if that makes any sense.

Bottled On 04/10/14

A: Pours a deep mahogany color with a fingers worth of creamy head that fades a little to a decent cap that leaves some good lacing

S: Some lightly roasted malts, caramel, and earthy hops stand out. Some dark fruit and nuttiness in the back

T: Starts off with the maltiness that is lightly roasty and a little grainy. Some caramel sweetness comes out to balance that light roast, while the dark fruitiness and nutty notes comes out as well. Finishes lightly bitter with a hint of the roast

M: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation

O: The amount of dark fruitiness in this reminds me a little of a quad or something of that manner (minus the Belgian yeast influence of, say, a quad), and not of a brown ale but it still works well with the light sweetness and roasty flavors. Clown Shoes can apparently do no wrong

Appearance: A medium brown, russet-toned body, appears hazed, with a thickish, beige, leisurely receding head.

Smell: A glorification of malt, the caramelly, toasty malts, the tastes of chocolate, brown sugar, and, yes, even a hint of roast boosted with fruity esters and a little welcoming hint of alcohol.

Taste: Toasty maltiness, reasonably nutty, with a thin, thin sliver of chocolate. Then, there's the caramel, aided by the additionally caramelly malts. Moderate sweetness without being excessive. A leafy, lowly earthy hops with some bitterness, but, ultimately, and, as one would expect, it is a malt-leaning brew. Raisiny, cherry esters falls amidst the malty flavors and caramel flavor. A mite bit drying, but, Burnt Caramel, again, as one would expect, still manages to finish with a lingering sweetness.

Mouthfeel: Falls at the far end of medium-bodied, bolstered by a bit of chewiness. Medium carbonation.

Overall: If you have a burning desire to see all that malts have to offer, this may be the one for you. Much to my regret, the few caramel-based beers have been as painful as a peanut to the eye. God, some have been almost disgusting. However, Clown Shoes brings us a solid, sturdy brown ale underneath with a deep, authentic (burnt) caramel flavor (whereas the Saranac Caramel Porter delivered a staunchly artificial taste).

Serving Type - 22oz bottle

Appearance - Brown/dark tan, 2 inch foamy tan head with nice lacing.

Smell - Strong aroma of sweet caramel, toasted malts, nut, a little brown sugar/molasses also.

Taste - Starts off with the classic nutty/roasty malt flavor. The added caramel really gives this a nice sweet flavor. Malts are smooth, bready and nutty. Some molasses and brown sugar add even more sweet flavor. There's really not a much more to say about a brown ale.

Mouthfeel - Malts and caramel coat the tongue. Palate gets the same with some added sugars.
Aftertaste is malty, nutty, and caramel.

Overall - Typically I find brown ales boring, too mild and all of them taste the same. With this one, the added caramel gives this some much need flavor to set it apart and become pleasurable to drink. Its sweet but nothing overboard. Smooth, roasty and caramel heavy, its a nice drink.

Pours a dark brown with a light tan head. Decent lacing.
Huge aroma of dark burnt caramel, toasted malt, dark fruit and nuts. I'm also tasting some molasses which is excellent. It's sweet and nutty with a perfect toasted smell.

Tastes of roasted malts and caramel are prevalent. Sweetness and brown sugar balance it out nicely. Such a great brew. Slight spices come out as well. It's a superb brown ale.

Mouthfeel is medium heavy. Typical for a brown ale like this.

Overall this is a must try. I can't wait to get more
