Dark bodied beer. Thin brown head. Decent retention. Aroma is quite nice and typical of a well done Black IPA....chocolate and roast mix with juicy, citrusy hops. Quite nice. Flavor foundation is layed down quite nicely with the chocolate/caramel malts while hop notes of citrus, pine and resin tap dance all over it. Moderately carbonated and medium to medium-full bodied. Nicely done. Nice little intro to Clown Shoes for me.

I poured this into a glass, it has a jet black color body with a thick cream head. The smell has a roasted malt aroma to it. The taste has a dark chocolate and roasty ness to it, I get a little hop on the back of the tongue. Mouthfeel is good and overall a good beer.

12 oz. bottle picked up in Port Huron; bottled Jan. 9 2014 and served moderately chilled.

Pours an opaque brownish-black colour with crimson highlights under the light. Seated atop the liquid is just under two fingers of creamy, light tan-coloured froth that manages to retain cohesion for a good 5+ minutes before eventually fading into a messy cap and collar. Beautiful lace. The aroma consists of roasted malts, coffee, raisins and grapefruit, with a hint of pine resin and booze in the background. About what I expect from this style.

Not bad at all, though I think this one's age is starting to show. Lots of dark, roasted malt flavours come through initially - toasted bread, roasted coffee beans and dark chocolate the foremost among them. Citrusy notes of grapefruit pith and some resiny pine bitterness begin to seep through toward the finish, culminating in an interesting finish that combines roasted malts, bitter resin and mild ethanol warmth. The resiny bitterness lingers on the palate after each sip. Medium-bodied, with moderate carbonation that provides a decent bite to distract you from the astringency.

Final Grade: 4.05, an A-. Certainly one of the better black ales I've had in recent memory. While I am enjoying this glass of Hoppy Feet, the beer itself is pushing 7 months of age and I am inclined to believe that the hop profile has suffered as a result. Considering both of those facts, I'll more than likely revisit this one at some point when I find a younger bottle, and adjust the score accordingly.

Serving type: poured into pint glass from a 22 oz bottle.

A: Pours a foamy 2 finger head which dissipates to a half inch ring and leaves nice lacing on the glass. Black with an amber hue.

S: Smells of dark malts, leather, and resin.

T: Dark fruit, leather, sweet dark malts and coffee with some bitter pine on the back of the palate. Enough booze, enough IBUs and plenty of character.

M: Excites the mouth with with carbonation, dark malts coat the tongue without being cloying.

My first black IPA, the style is complex and interesting. This was like drinking a Black and Tan made from a porter and an IPA, delicious and worth the experience!
