Appearance - Pours near black with deep, dark ruby red highlights when held to light. Tan, 2 finger head with good retention, resulting in a fine, consistent film of suds across the surface. Leaves a fair amount of lacing with good stick.
Smell - This smells promising! Big citrus notes and a touch of pine and hop spice backed by solid notes of chocolate malt.
Taste - Mostly an earthy, bitter baker's chocolate character upfront, but there's also a noticeable metallic twang which resonates throughout. Hops are subdued, but a subtle citrus pith peaks through near and into the finish, as well as a mild coffee bitterness.
Mouthfeel - Medium in body with lively carbonation. Thins out toward the end and leaves a semi-dry finish.
Overall - No decipherable freshness date (I found on the bottom of the bottle, and held at a specific angle against a close light source, '2013 B1 0435'. Anyone know?), so unfortunately I cannot cornfirm if this is just an old bottle or just a beer that isn't quite my ideal CDA. A bigger hop bite would be nice.
