Poured from a bomber into a nonic pint glass.

A: Clear, dark garnet color with two fingers of diminishing mocha-tinted foam head. Very thick lacing remains, nearly continuous and with obvious relief.

S: Mild wood smoke is immediately evident, followed by milk chocolate and aggressive piney hops.

T: Begins off-dry, with refined roasted malt and hop aromatics that capture the pine from the smell as well as additional layers of artificial menthol or floor cleaner. Acidity is mild and evasive, respecting the roast. Fresh coffee is strong in the middle, also with some molasses joining, but influenced perhaps most heavily by the pungent Columbus hops. The middle is bitter and acrid, though not offensive, remaining hoppy and roasty to the end.

M: Thin to medium viscosity; simultaneously wet, slightly sticky, and even creamy; with moderate carbonation.

D/O: Despite the aggressive Columbus hop presence here, this is a remarkable black IPA. I didn't want to like this beer from a poorly-named brewery that seemed over-hyped since the first mention of it. Now, this beer has convinced me that Clown Shoes is only a slightly worse name for a brewery than The Bruery.

12 oz bottle, with Jan. 2014 bottling date, served in a snifter.

Pours opaque and essentially black with a small, semi-durable head.

As per the looks, this is loaded with dark roasted grains. No shortage of hops either, but these two flavor components clash a bit, as is common with black IPAs. More burnt grain flavor and burnt toast than I'd prefer. Black coffee appears mid-taste and lingers on well after the swallow.

O: strongly flavored black IPA with hoppy, if not happy, feet.

Bottle: a standard 355mL brown bottle with a decent craft label.

Appearance: a very dark black colour without much in the way of highlights. No carbonation visible through either. A small off-white head pops up and hangs about for a good time before settling to a thick ring with great lacing.

Aroma: a pretty demure aroma, but what is evident is roasted malts, some nuts, and coffee.

Taste: roasted malts and some citrus hops, with rich tropical fruits. A combination I don't think I have come across too often - and it works.

Aftertaste: lingers well, with some hop bitterness biting at the end. A great beer.

Mouth feel: well-rounded in the mouth - a good structure. Smooth also - a nice easy sipper.

Overall: a great black ale - very different to most of the black ales I have had. More nuances to this one, and richer. Well worth the slightly over AU$100 a case price.

Look - Very dark with slight head that went away quick. The way a black ipa should look.
Smell - I can barely smell it. After trying really hard I can slight smell toasted malty slight coffee smell
Taste - when I first tasted it I hated it due to the bitterness and lack of hop taste. After a few sips the maltiness calmed down and I could start getting the hop taste. This beer is very dark tasting with not enough hops for a black imperial ipa. Taste more stout.
Feel - medium body with slight carbonation.
Overall - not a fan of this black iipa. Lacking way to much. Black ipa's are a hit or miss and this is a miss. I don't plan to drink this ever again. I'm hoping this beer was skunked and if for some chance I try it again it taste better!
