Poured a bottle into a chilled mug.

A: Pours a dark brown with no translucence, like a typical stout. Pours with an amber two-fingered head, moderate lacing with sticky brown resin clinging to the side of the mug.

S: Citrus, chocolate, brown sugar and coffee on the nose. Just a hint of pine resin.

T: Grapefruit and bitter floral notes up front. Then comes the sweet dark chocolate, coffee and malty flavors.

M: Surprisingly light, fizzy and crisp for a stout. Very refreshing.

O: This beer is a bit challenging and confusing at first, but this of the most interesting beers I've tried. It's like drinking two beers at the same time. You get the citrusy hops, like a IPA, then the caramelized maltiness and richness of a stout. Drinks like an ale, with stout-y goodness!

355ml Bottle from Brewdog's Online Shop:
Black with a thumb-sized head that is creamy & holds well, especially over the opening couple of minute. There was very little movement initially & the head smoothed out a little after a bit with some minimal lacing on the sides.

Hoppy & IPA-like to start with some subdued pine notes & bitterness. A strong, darker malts presence with some darker fruits coming in as well with some sweetness that makes the beer seem almost like a porter. There is some grapefruit & pine coming through towards the end too.

Mellow hops with a pine bitterness & a little bit of grapefruit coming through, quickly followed by some darker malts, hints of sweetness & coffee. The beer tasted quite fresh & lively with the hops and malts balancing against each other well.

Smooth with a medium body & plenty of bitterness from the hops throughout, although hints of sweetness make an appearance. Carbonation was about medium with this one & the beer had a good balance too.

A pretty good offering, it's hoppy & packs a punch with regards to bitterness. I enjoyed with one, particularly because the balance was good with the hop bitterness & the darker malts working well together.

Picked this up the other day in Totowa, not having a beer from Clown Shoes in quite some time. With all of the Black IPA's out there now, I thought that this would get lost in the shuffle but this was enjoyable and pretty easy to drink, once I let the voluminous head settle down after a while.

No doubt that the pour and appearance were the best aspects of this beer, not that the other features weren't enjoyable either. The head had to be the thickest that I've ever seen for anything out of a bottle that I've emptied into a pint glass, as the bubbles rapidly filled up to the top and didn't quit for quite some time. It was like an ice cream float squared as the tan, creamy suds stuck around for a while, nearly looking solid in nature. The beer itself was quite dark with garnet edges and a good amount of carbonation to boot. Not a strong aroma to this but there was some dark fruit and a toasted maltiness to this. Both of those were found in the taste as well, along with some dark bread and dry, earthy hops that subtly shone through in the back. The IBU's were just right and this came across as a Schwarzbier of sorts to me, but just a bit stronger that a typical one would be.

This had booze for sure but it didn't detract from the taste of this beer and I could only feel a slight warming once I polished this off. The recessed dark fruit tones were enhanced licorice sweetness that tied everything together, without making this seem artificial or not true to style. There's a lot to like here and as this warmed up, it grew nicely on me. A good take on the style that's easy to enjoy year-round and possibly, the best current offering from Clown Shoes.

Dark ale with a thin dissipating head. Notes of caramel malt on the nose. Some sweetness is offset by mild bitterness. Tabacco notes reminicient of a porter. A decent, drinkable beer, but nothing remarkable here. Not sure if I am a fan of the dark IPA style.
