Insanely thick head with even the most conservative, down-the-side pour. With half a glass to go, head is still 1/2". Stong aroma of roasted grain from a very rich chocolate brown with no light shining through the glass. A licorice taste comes out after a bit. The label says 80 IBUs which seems high to my taste. Classed as a black ale, not an IPA, but I would vote to move this to the IPA column.

This was poured into a nonic pint glass.
The appearance was a solid dark black color with a one finger white to off white foamy head that dissipated fairly quickly. Lingering messy lacing roamed around the glass adequately.
The smell started off with a big slick wet pine, smelled really fresh like it was just plucked right on off a pine tree. After a bit of warming, light roasty coffee and cocoa runs into the pine and blends nicely.
The taste was moderately sweet with the roast making a good effort to balance yet still have a nice bitterness to also make a sly backing in the flavor. Pine and roasty coffee makes the aftertaste and runs into the finish.
The mouthfeel had a semi-roasty to semi-sweet balanced bittersweet piney/roastiness rolling over my tongue.
Overall, I'd say this was a nice black ale that I would have again.

A 12 fl oz bottle with a bottled on date of 2nd March 2015 and poured into an oversized wine glass.

Appearance: Poured a near opaque black with a one finger caramel coloured head that dissipated slowly leaving spotty lacing.

Aroma: Begins with caramel malts and toffee followed by notes of pine, grass and also some dark chocolate.

Taste: Caramel, black coffee and bittersweet chocolate followed by grassy and piney hops.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with medium carbonation.

Overall: A nice hoppy Black IPA that I would revisit again.

Really solid black IPA. Pours black with a thin khaki lacing that dissipates fairly quickly. Aroma of slight pine, grass, oats and roasted coffee. The hops come through first and foremost followed by roasted oats and then a nice bitterness to round it all off. I'm not a fan of black IPAs in general (I felt like giving it another shot) but it's easy to tell that this is a good representation of the style that's easy to drink.

Had a very large creamy caramel color head. Dark in color with a very hoppy smell to it, along with some sweetness. Has an overwhelming hop taste that matches the smell.

The hops seem to perfectly match up with an assertive, yet refined roast character. Notes of West coast hops dance around dark malts like mad men around a fire. Lighter in body than one would expect of such substantial flavors.

I’m relatively new to Clown Shoes and have loved their beers so far. This one is a Black IPA, which to me is like a unicorn, because they seem a bit rare and the great ones are even harder to come by. This one is a perfect 7.0% ABV and is as black as an India Brown Ale and almost as black as an Imperial Stout.

Look-Well I’ve already said that it is a dark beer so I’ll just add that it has orange/red tint that shines through on the side of the glass even in a dim light. The head is has a brown hue that seems like the darkness has been bleeding into the one and a half thick foamy head. The lacing is off-white and bubbly.

Smell-It smells first of caramel malts and hops. I get notes of citrus, pine, and grassy hops that overshadow the slight toffee and roasted coffee malts. The malts are a bit muted in my opinion.

Taste-The smell follows the nose, but the hops are more pronounced. The astringency from the hops mixes in a peculiar but interesting fashion with the caramel malts and toasted grains. There are also grassy notes that shine through. This brew isn’t very sweet since it is a Black IPA. It was true to its name so that is cool. I get some tangerine and orange peel from the hops.

Mouthfeel-It has a slight stickiness, but is creamy and smooth. It is medium-bodied and crisp. The carbonation is perfect and complements the medium alcohol content.

Overall-It has a refreshing cola aspect to it as well as a well-balanced flavor that reminds me of a more hoppy version of Dogfish Head’s India Brown Ale (see my review of that one for more information).

Drinking out of a tulip glass

L: Real dark, nearly opaque, like a stout. Thick frothy head wtih nice lacing. Sexy looking beer
S: Kind of faint, IMO. Sweet odor, some sting from the hops on the nose. Roasted malt.
T: Really great flavor. I would say my only qualm with the beer is it is somewhat acrid from the combination of dark roast malt and the choice of hops here. I like it but the bitterness is a bit much, and I like IPAs. Other than that, has that chocolately/coffee and creme flavor you'd expect from a dark beer such as this. The hops are nice, a bit on the pungent side, somewhat piney. Kind of lacks balance and drinkability.
F: As mentioned somewhat acrid/astringent, sort of pulls the moisture from your mouth. Medium carbonation, heavy drinking.
O: I like this beer. Always a fun style. That being said this one has a lot of flavor, and a decent amount of booze, which makes it kind of hard to have more than a few of. Not my first run with it, certainly won't be my last.

This is a well made balanced beer that i would definitely get if i see again. Reminds me of Victory's Storm King and He'Brew Bittersweet Lenny's R.I.P.A.
Smell: molasses, wet hops, roasted malt, brown sugar and caramel
Taste: bitter taste that mixes roasted malt and hops that changes to dark chocolate, caramel and wet hops combined
Mouthfeel: Creamy heavy feel that finishes crisp and clean

Beer of great character. It looks like an Irish stout and tastes like a strong IPA. Bitter, sweet fragrance, beautiful presence. However, it is not easy to grasp, is not for everyone.

12oz bottle into my Dogfish glass.

A: Pours a deep, dark amber/brown with reddish accents. 1" off white head that recedes at a snails pace. Retention & lacing are top-flight.

S: Very muted aromas. Piney hops & graham cracker malt. Maybe dark chocolate.

T: Comes on off-sweet with more of the graham cracker aspect & some not-bitter dark chocolate. Mid palate has almost a date-like quality that quickly transitions into black coffee bitterness & more piney, bitter hops to finish. Quite nice!

M: Generously carbed with a pretty burly malt body. It has a silky richness that fits the flavors.

O: I could see myself drinking this pretty regularly, I like the complexity & notable bittering hop additions.

Unique blend of Columbus and Amarillo hops in this IPA. Get your pallet ready for the 80 IBU blitz.

Ipswich MA is the east coast San Diego.
Love Clown Shoes brews.

A. espresso color and a sea-foam beige head that lasts nicely and leaves lots of lace.

S: Roasted malts appear first, with wood char and peat fire, but then piney/minty hops emerge as if thrown on the fire.

T: Blacked dark bread, then piney hops assault with a minty-bitter-peppery direction. Lots of complexity, good sipper.

F: Medium body with prickly, carbonation, and nice cream feel.

O: This is a major, bitter explosion on the buds without much fruit and mostly dark char, fire, pepper, pine, mint, herbs. Like herbs thrown on a fire pit.

Pour obsidian black with a roaring khaki colored creamy head, lacing is moderate to high. At a distance of about 8in from the glass I get strong floral aroma hops with caramely roasted malts smells trying to peak through, closer to the glass I get more of the biscuity base malt smells tinged with a slight vanilla finish. In the beginning of the taste I get a brilliant balance of caramel and dried fruit, followed in the end with a strong but not overpowering presence of bittering hops. This one isn't too heavy on the palate and finishes nicely. Overall its very balanced, mingling the dangerous black malts and base malts with the bitter and fruity hops. The only thing for me at the end was plastic like taste lingering between sips, but this fades about 1/4 of the way through the beer. I'm honestly surprised this one isn't rated higher, but everyone has a different palate.

Dark brown in color. The nose had the requisite hoppiness but it was not impressive overall. Certainly the flavor profile was significantly more hoppy than malty.

This was a fine effort but nothing outstanding.

Black body and beautiful head. Stout-like. First sip though not nearly as hoppy as hoped. Unexpected dry finish, only slightly bitter with heavy coffee notes.

Appearance: Brilliant deep dark beown with a 1” light tan foam cap that produces light lace. Smell: Smells like a light chocolate cola with races of hops. Taste: Very creamy palate chocolate, cola, anise – the hops give the chocolate a bittersweet character. Mouthfeel: Medium full body, medium carbonation, fine and soft, creamy.

12 oz bottle. Black ipa. Loads of roasted malts but not a lot of hops on the front end but definitely on the back end. Don't taste much citrus. Stone Black IPA is better. Not bad. Just not great.

Big chocolate up front. Soft earthy hops. Clean, soft bitterness that cleared fairly quickly. The beer had its moments, but nothing memorable about this beer.

I have admit a certain prejudice that was welling up inside as I opened and poured this brew. I've been on the fence when it comes to products put forward by Clown Shoes having been disappointed by some of there offerings. I struggle to keep an open mind as I dislike the extreme polarity of modern opinion holders. Blah, blah, blah.
It poured dark, had a reasonable about of foam, the aroma was pleasant with a hint of hops. The taste was pleasant and reminiscent of a decent though not outstanding stout. Stout? Black IPA? What is this stuff? I went back to the reference materials for a definition which seems to place it in its own category based on brewing method,ABV,IBU's and so forth. I acquiesced and finished the liquid in the glass no matter what it was called. In the end I actually enjoyed it and would try it again if it came my way.
Please forgive all this subjective blather. I promise to be more objective and less haughty in the future. A logo for a brewery in NH states "Fear No Beer" something I shall take to heart and with an open mind.

I've never been a black ipa fan and hoppy feet doesn't change my mind. Pours like a dark coke product with 2" of head. Aroma-roasted malt little citrus. Taste was very bitter. Again lots of roasted malts, some citrus notes but overshadowed. Bitter after taste.

Poured a jet black-brown color with a 2F head in a snifter.

Citrus- notably grapefruit, and roasted malt in the aroma.

MF- very hoppy and carbonated.

Taste: an excellent meld of roasted malt and citrus. It's quite intense- almost an over the top burnt malt taste which blends with the citrus. Highlighted roasted malt of the typical in the style- one of my favorites- more in this beer. What's interesting is that the body is light-medium, but the roasted malt intensity makes it a slow drinker.

An excellent beer. My bottle was 2 months old, but Black IPAs endure better than other styles of IPAs. Clown Shoes has a singular approach to brewing style. This is quite different.
Intensity without a big bodied beer.

Appearance - Pours a dark cola brown with three fingers of frothy tan head.

Smell - roasted malts, coffee bean, slight pine, hint of citrus hops, hint of orange, hint of grapefruit.

Taste - Starts off with the roasted malts then goes into pine resin and citrus hops. Definitely more predominate then the aroma suggests. It then goes into the grapefruit peel, hint of orange, and coffee bean.

Mouthfeel - Medium bodied with moderate carbonation . Finishes with lingering bitterness from the hops along with the coffee bean.

Overall - An interesting venture on the Black IPA style by adding coffee bean. I found the hops to be pretty subdued in the aromas, but quickly turned around in the taste. Some minor tweaks to allow the hops to shine in the aroma would make this a true stand out.

Pours a dark black with a 'root beer" like head. Smells more bitter than it tastes. Taste is very smooth. One of the better black ales that I have tried.
