12oz bottle - the label imagery resonates well right now, as I watch the sun fade over my west-facing deck.

This beer pours a very dark, cola syrup highlighted russet brown colour, with three fat-ass fingers of puffy, rocky, and generally creamy beige head, which leaves some nice gear chain webbed lace around the glass as it slowly recedes.

It smells of musty, slightly dank pine resin, dry powdered dark cocoa, muted orange and grapefruit bitters, old leather couches, black bread, and a slight herbal, leafy astringency. The taste is gritty chocolate-ensconced caramel malt, hard toffee, wet ash, still mildly dank pine forest floor, an acrid grapefruit and lemon fruitiness, more tanned leather, and subtly metallic cold alcohol.

The bubbles are nothing special, but supportive enough, just the way I like 'em, the body an adequate medium weight, and a bit too astringently hoppy, toasty, and well, boozy to be considered all that smooth. It finishes just a tad off-dry, the bready caramel flailing in a wind of agreeable char, hop, and sublimated liquor.

An approachable and drinkable version of a style to which I'm still coming around. The hop yin and roast yang bang heads (or touch tips, whatever) well enough, leaving my gustatory expectations generally satisfied. Worth a go if you like your dark roasty beers hoppy, or your decent IPA dragged through the coals.
