22oz bottle. Sexy blaxploitation meets Catholic afterlife mockery - who could be offended by that, eh?
This beer pours a clear (I believe), rather dark red-brick amber hue, with three fingers of puffy, loosely foamy, and pretty bubbly tan head, which leaves some decent broadly spanning webbed lace around the glass as it slowly ebbs away.
It smells of lightly toasted, and subtly meaty biscuity caramel malt, softly dank piney and leafy forest floor detritus, overripe citrus rind, bar-top nut skins, and the faintest whiff of bittersweet cocoa. The taste is gritty bready, doughy, and dry biscuity caramel malt, muddled green flora notes, mildly spicy orange citrus, more pithy generic nuttiness, wet ash, and a suggestion of time spent hanging around a black coffee urn, one adjacent to the creamer station as well.
The carbonation is gently rendered, in a playful, if a bit obsequious frothiness, the body a wavering medium weight for something out of 'murica, plainly smooth, and well, well nothing. It finishes off-dry, the 'layers upon layers' of malt surely saving some for the end, amongst a lingering bitter coffee, chocolate, and still mixed-up pine and citrus hoppiness - oh, those crazeee kids!
American Brown Ale? Why the hell not, truth in advertising is not said nation's strong suit. Way more amber than brown, and with a few smoky notions more aligned with the nascent Black Ale denomination, I'm at a virtual loss as to whether this one comes anywhere near the ballpark (talk like a native, they won't know!) of the purported style. Ok, on to actual impression - ummm, tastes good to me.

More people need to make good brown ale's in my opinion. I thought Brown Angel was great. The first beer from Clown Shoes I bought was this for nothing other than the artwork on the bottle but I became a big fan. The appearance is a dark brown with an off white head which sticks a bit to the side of the glass. The smell was very sweet with hints of chocolate and walnuts coming through. The taste was more subtle with roasted malt and barley coming through with a nice clean finish. The only thing I'm not a giant fan of is it's a little thin but easily overlooked. I love this beer because it's the beer that got me into Clown Shoes as a whole.

Pours a finger and half of light tan head on a brown body.
The aroma is extra nutty, roasted and toasted malt and a touch of lemon.
The taste is a well rounded roasted malt and chocolate flavor. There's some mild bitterness in the middle to balance it out.
The texture is smooth and soft.
It tends towards the sweeter side, but it's really good.
