22oz bomber poured into a Sam Adams Perfect Pint glass. This beer pours a very pale straw color with golden highlights. It appears to be amply carbonated. A large, bubbly, thin head rises and takes over a third of the glass. The head retains itself for approximately 5 minutes before finally fading away. Very sparse lacing clings to the glass.

The nose is an attractive array of citrus fruits – very sweet smelling arrangement of lemon and orange. Maybe some banana in there as well. The added spices seem to be dominated by clove making this smell more of a hefeweizen than a white.

The taste is quite subdued and a letdown in comparison to the nose. It is faintly citrusy with more of a malt presence. The orange presents itself with more emphasis on the bitter rind than the sweet fruit. The finish is a bit floral and earthy, with slight hop bitterness. It isn’t really memorable in the least – in fact a bit thin and watery.

The carbonation is good, maybe just a bit too much. A bit too thin in this department as well.

Overall this is a decent example of the style, nicely spiced, but nothing spectacular. I guess I just don’t get all the hullabaloo about this brewery.

Bottle: a standard 355mL brown bottle with a decent craft label.

Appearance: a cloudy mid-amber colour with decent carbonation. A one-finger head hangs about for a time before settling to a thin cap.

Aroma: plenty of clean wheat, orange and tangerine citrus. A touch of Belgian yeasts.

Taste: follows the nose quite closely - wheat, citrus, cloves and like yeasts. Very little hint of alcohol. Refreshing.

Aftertaste: still quite refreshing, an easy drinking beer.

Mouth feel: fairly light in body with a moderate fine carbonation. Quite sweet up front with a dryness on the finish.

Overall: quite a tasty witbier - very clean and refreshing. I don't think it has quite enough over the standard witbier to justify the price, but hey - still a damn good beer.

Pours very cloudy, there is a lot of sediment here, although it suspends nicely with a good aggressive swirl. Taste is lightly sweet, faint fruit taste as you'd expect. Nice and refreshing, no edge to it at all. Really enjoyable if you're looking for a light summery beer.

Picked this up in Totowa this past weekend, not having any beers from Clown Shoes in quite some time. I like this style of beer a lot but for some reason, this didn't do it for me. It went down well and was true to form but there wasn't anything notable about this and once the head settled down, this was a somewhat flat Witbier that needed a slightly bolder array of flavors to it.

The pour to this was indeed good, as this beer had a hazy, golden hue and a thick head that settled into a nice layer of foam. Quite a bit of sediment at the bottom of the bottle as well, as it too me a while to swirl it out. No date on this bottle either, as I would have liked to have known how old this was. Lots of citrus zest in the nose with some lemon, pepper, and straw. Not a lot of wheat to be tasted and this was just a hair too thin and sour for me. Some more carbonation would have been great too, as I didn't see or feel any when I took my sips.

Of course, the alcohol wasn't that heavy here, which lead to this going down faster than it should have. While beers of this style tend to be light and easygoing, this could have been a bit more heavy and bold. Citrus lovers might want to substitute this for a glass of orange juice but now that the spring is here, there are much better examples of this to be found on your local retailer's shelf. Only worth a try for fans of Clown shoes.
