In my own personal race to reach the big four zero zero I came across Clown Shoes, which Monty Python would no doubt remark "is a silly name indeed" and to which I would tend to agree, so yeah I'm telling you that I bought Clementine pretty much solely due to the brewer having a silly name. That's just a mere glimpse at the hampster-on-wheel logic going on inside my head, enjoy!
Poured from a 355ml bottle into a Chimay chalice.
A: A perfect Clementine coloured hazy body with a white half centimetre head. Looks great it has to be said, but hardly a "white ale" or Witbier, sorry Clown Shoes.
S: Typical Witbier coriander leaf, orange peel and candi sugar aromas at play. A second inhale reveals a lingering back note of medicinal hops. Not bad, not bad at all.
T: Spicy coriander and white pepper leads to some chewy mid-palate orange peel, sugar-glaze and bread yeast which then finishes with a touch of medicinal hops. It has a nice, clean refreshing palate at play here and is quite honestly the best US made Witbier I've tried, though admittedly the list of US Wits I've tried is shorter than my forearm.
M: Medium bodied with a creamy, dense carbonation, spot on again Clown Shoes.
D: I must say I've got to hand it to myself on my system of picking out beers based on how silly their brewers name is. It has worked a real treat this time and if you're looking for the best Witbier outside of Belgium (based on my limited knowledge, yes) this is the one. I could drink this stuff all evening if the price tag wasn't so restrictive. Dammit Australia make a decent Belgian style Wit already! Anyway, bravo Clown Shoes, bravo.
Food match: Lighter spiced dishes such as garlic chilli prawns or a spicy BBQ fish with mango salad would pair quite well.
Note: This is how I remember Hoegaarden Original tasting before it got bought out by a multinational and watered down to the point of silliness.
