Shared bottle at local tasting, as Clown Shoes First Anniversary Ale Hoppy Feet 1.5 Double Black India Pale Ale. ABV is 10%. Black colour, moderate beige head. Strong and pleasant hoppy aroma, some mild roasty notes in the background. Distinct and powerful piney / hoppy flavour, fairly dry, moderate roasty notes. Massive bitterness in the finish.

Black beer pours black with beige head, no surprises Radiohead said. Aroma was dark fruit and alcohol, some roast. Barely perceptible tree like hops.

Taste tamed the alcohol somewhat, as usual, clown shoes just doesn't make anything hoppy that is truly far removed from average on the good side (some examples of way below average). This is no different. Its a big ass black ale that imparts more roast than hop flavor. Big beer, bomber format, no repeat purchase, just average to slightly above.

Appearance: Black, thick, tannish head.

S: Smells much more like an imperial stout than a black IPA. It’s malty, roasty, with faint hoppiness. Despite the label claiming it was dry hopped twice, I do not sense a ton of evidence of that, though to be fair my bottle wasn't as fresh as I would have liked.

T: Burnt, roasty flavors mingle with hoppiness upfront, with a fairly malty finish though. Leaves substantial bitterness that seems both hop and roasted/dark malt derived. Some alcohol in the taste as well.

F: A medium-thick mouthfeel with low carbonation and a good deal of alcoholic warmth.

O: I was pretty disappointed with this beer. I really had high hopes: I’ve heard great things about the brewery, this beer has gotten really good reviews, and it wasn't the cheapest bottle in the world. I didn't get much hop aroma and the taste did not have fresh hoppy characteristics aside from being very bitter.

Best Black IPA I have had to date. Nose and taste are nothing short of badass.

Appearance: Brilliant deep dark brown under a 2” light tan moussey foam cap that produces thick lace. Light legs. Smell: Rich malt, dark chocolate, traces of coffee, light roast, grapefruit rind hops. Taste: Starts with dark chocolate, then coffee, and alcohol, with hints of licorice, and a little pepper on the finish. The roast, malts and hops contribute to the bitterness on the finish giving it a character of espresso bitter chocolate with some citrus rind. Mouthfeel: Creamy, smooth, big and bountiful - medium full body, medium carbonation.

Pours pitch black with a thin foamy head. Head retention and lacing are mild. Has a malty, licorice, raisin aroma. Smooth, silky taste. Can definitely taste licorice, maybe some slight chocolate and raisins. You can definitely detect the booziness. It has a slightly astringent aftertaste with some hoppy bitterness. Good beer, but not much of a black licorice fan.
