Pours pitch black with a thin lacing of brown head that has little retention. The nose has a bouquet of hop aromas as well as some chocolate and roasted malts, some coffee undertones, and some faint anise. The flavor is bold, rich chocolate malts with some roasty notes and some anise. The hop character is intense. The hops really hit the full spectrum; piny, floral, citrusy. There are some alcohol esters throughout as well that add some warmth and body. This is a full bodied, heavy, rich, smooth beer.

In mouthfeel and appearance this is like a RIS, but the hops are so potent that it quickly becomes a fantastic Black IPA. This was a fantastic beer. I'll definitely pick up another bomber the next time I'm at the store.

This bipa pours a very near black color with a generous tan head that lasts well into the pour and leaves very substantial lacing. The aroma was far maltier than I had expected for an imperial black ipa. The same can be said for the flavor; although that was more complex with notes of vanilla and coffee present. Overall, this one seemed closer to porter or even stout than black ipa. Would have enjoyed a hoppier presence like its little brother Hoppy Feet.

Poured from a 650 ml bottle into DFH IPA glass.

A: Black with a 2 finger, foamy khaki head. Settles fairly slowly, leaving a smattering of bubbles and a partial foam blanket on the surface. Thick, persistent lacing.

S: Roasted nut shells, and a little black licorice. Just a bit of grapefruit peaks out from behind the roasty characteristics, and is accentuated with a bit of butterscotch.

T: Roasted pecan shells, bitter floral hops, and a fair amount of black licorice.

M: Heavy mouthfeel. Bitter and roasty. A little boozy. Bitterness lingers on the palate throughout.

D: Sipping experience... the character will dictate as much.

Atmosphere is really strong. Dark, with a substantial head, and plenty of persistent lacing. Nose is a well balanced combination of char roast, bitter citrus, and a touch of sweetness. Very roasty, with biting bitterness, and a nice hop. Overall, this is a really good quaff.

Outlived my expectations.

Appearance:
As black as any beer I've seen to date - ZERO light penetration. Finger-thick beige head disappears quickly to little more than a ring. Okay lacing and legs that can be spotted a mile away.

Aroma:
Sweet cocoa and molasses. Undertones of espresso and hints of caramel irradiate through thick malt and surprisingly subtle pine notes. A bit of cola.

Taste:
This one is a tongue bruiser, but I'll be damned, it's tasty! Wasting no time, this brew attacks with gusto - bitterness hits right away with a distinct pine punch, a bit grassy even. However, gobs of roasted malts and roll with the punches and provide a bit of peat and burnt chocolate. It hurts so good, even the aftertaste is bitter. Alcohol is noticeable. Sweetness is omnipresent but muted and most notable on the finish - mostly molasses.

Mouthfeel:
Thick. More carbonation than I was expecting to encounter. Finishes sweet and somehow dry at the same time. Light alcohol burn. Ashy aftertaste.

Overall:
Intense... There is nothing subtle about this beer. If you like the clashing of two worlds, this beer is most certainly for you. Whether you're a hophead or you prefer to indulge in sweet malts, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised with this. I highly recommend picking this one up, and I also recommend bringing a friend along for the ride. Attempting to tackling a bottle of this, alone, is madness.
