22oz bottle from Total Wine (Kennesaw, GA). 8.99. Bottled 03/2012. Served in a stemmed New Holland glass.
Pours glossy black with two fingers of creamed capuccino head. Ocassional small clumps of lace.
Smells dark roasty with chocolate, coffee and a little smokey pine.
Tastes of deep roasted malts, dark chocolate, licorice, coffee, smoke and raisins with just enough hints of piney bitter hops and booze. A really nice blend.
Oily slick, medium thick feel with moderate sharp carbonation. Long bitter aftertaste with more coffee and dark chocolate notes.
I've enjoyed this one several times so it was past time to review. This is my favorite year-round available Russian imperial stout and favorite from Clown Shoes. Thick, smooth (much more than expected for 12.5% abv), creamy and complex. Plus it ages well. Highly recommended for imperial stout lovers.

Bottled on 2/22/13. Says its designed to improve with age.
Appearance: Black body with a thin cap of light brown suds. Not quite as dark as some other stouts but definitely looks the part.
Aroma: Rich dark malt and stone fruit. Dried figs. I've got a bit of a head cold so this thing is very quite aromatic for being about a year and a half since it was bottled.
Taste: Starts with nearly sweet dark malt flavor that transitions to a sweet cream flavor. The hops don't add much to the flavor, likely having faded from sitting on the shelf for so long. However, the bitter tones from the dark malt help balance the creamy sweetness. Finish is bitter coffee grinds. Really not tasting much of the 12.5% ABV apart from a burn on the palate in the aftertaste.
Mouthfeel: Very smooth with moderate carbonation. Full in body.
Final Thoughts: This one basically met my expectations. Would have liked to taste a little vanilla or perhaps an oaken-aged version just to spruce it up a bit. The flavor is consistent with many other well known stouts of the style. Definitely a well done beer but nothing special. Would I drink it again? Maybe if it was on nitro-tap.
