This bottle is from 11/2011
Pours a 1/3 inch dark chocolate head, body is pitch black. Head retention and lacing are barely above average.
Smell is big on charred, roasted malts. I get semi sweet chocolate, freshly baked cookies, burnt oak, and even some vanilla bean. Hops arent very noticeable and alcohol is lightly detected. One of the most complex smelling beers I've had.
First taste is of chocolate covered espresso beans, sweet but with a bitter bite. Charred oak and some smokiness balance out the sweetness and some medicinal hops come out in the aftertaste. At 12.5% abv it's not too potent but the alcohol does coat the throat and leave a nice warmness in the stomach.
Mouthfeel is medium bodied with a good amount of carbonation. Beer could have used more of a head or a fuller body, one of the few flaws in this outstanding stout.
Overall this beer was very good, an excellent example of a bold Imperial stout without being brash or over the top. The sweetness on the nose was amazing and when the taste was about to get cloyingly sweet, burnt malts and bitter hops balanced the palate out and left you wanting more. For almost 13% abv, this beer drank well and wasnt overbearing. If only the body had the substance of say a Ten Fidy or Peche Mortel it would easily be in my top 5 of all time.

Bottled on 2/22/13. Says its designed to improve with age.
Appearance: Black body with a thin cap of light brown suds. Not quite as dark as some other stouts but definitely looks the part.
Aroma: Rich dark malt and stone fruit. Dried figs. I've got a bit of a head cold so this thing is very quite aromatic for being about a year and a half since it was bottled.
Taste: Starts with nearly sweet dark malt flavor that transitions to a sweet cream flavor. The hops don't add much to the flavor, likely having faded from sitting on the shelf for so long. However, the bitter tones from the dark malt help balance the creamy sweetness. Finish is bitter coffee grinds. Really not tasting much of the 12.5% ABV apart from a burn on the palate in the aftertaste.
Mouthfeel: Very smooth with moderate carbonation. Full in body.
Final Thoughts: This one basically met my expectations. Would have liked to taste a little vanilla or perhaps an oaken-aged version just to spruce it up a bit. The flavor is consistent with many other well known stouts of the style. Definitely a well done beer but nothing special. Would I drink it again? Maybe if it was on nitro-tap.
