22oz bottle with Bottled 2/2012 on the side. Pours an almost pitch black color with an inch of frothy brown head. Some lacing. Aromas of roasted malts, dark chocolate, black coffee, and earth. Taste is smoke and roasted malts up front. Dark chocolate and coffee. Warming alcohol as well. Chocolate and boozey finish. Heavy mouthfeel. Overall, this is a solid Russian Imperial Stout. Worth grabbing again, although I'd like to try aging one.

A - pours like motor oil, thick and black with a soft, brown head that has good retention

S - chocolate, anise, black licorice, roasted malts

T - anise, roasted malts, chocolate, rich, alcohol

M - full bodied, little carbonation, warm, a bit boozy

This is an incredibly crafted, full bodied, perfectly flavored RIS. I look forward to buying a few more of these bombers in the future.

1pt 6fl oz. Pint glass. Enjoyed on jun´12. (perfect after drinking a Supa Hero)– Thanks to Manolo Baltasar from Freiburg & Robert Merryman from George & Dragon for sharing this one & many more. Black color. Tan, creamy, crown. Nice retention. Roasted malts, cocoa & sweet coffee both in flavors & aromas. Bitter chocolate at first sip & creamy sweet maltiness. Smooth & plentiful palate. Some dark fruit touch & dry bitter coffee & chocolate in the middle. Medium to full body, moderate carbonation. Good company when in good conversation.

22 oz. bottle poured into Weyerbacher cuvee glass. Bottled February of this year.

A - Pours nearly black with one finger of ,ocha colored head. Holds at a half finger for the duration and leaves the glass speckled with lace. For the most part, beers of this style all look the same. This one fits the mold.

S - Big toasted malts, almond, and lousy coffee. I get a pretty powerful mix of windex and booze in this one as well. Not impressive.

T - The flavor is dominated by toasty, burnt flavors and coffee. Just a touch ofsweet malt to balance the otherwise dry, bitter, smokey flavors. Not too much alcohol on the finish, especially for a beer with an ABV this high. I really like it.

M - Well carbonated and a medium body. The texture and flavors work to leave my mouth watering after each sip.

O - This has been on my "to drink list" for a while and finally got around to cracking it open tonight. The smell was a bit offputting, but I enjoyed it from the first sip. Strangely, the windex aroma went away after I started drinking it. Clown Shoes is becoming one of my favorite breweries, especially with their dark beers (the Hoppy Feets, Vampire Slayer, Chocolate Sombrero). The prices are lower than most other breweries bombers as well; this one was only $8 which isn't bad for a 12.5% RIS. Overall, very good and I will get it again.

Bottle into snifter. Bottled 2/2012

A- Super dark brown/black pour. Two finger creamy light tan head with super chunky, sticky lacing.

S- Dark roasted coffee, dark bitter chocolate, a touch of char. Slight dark fruits and vanilla with brown sugar and molasses.

T- Dark roasted coffee, super dark bitter chocolate, and a good amount of char and tobacco. Brown sugar, vanilla and a bit of oak. The alcohol is invisible, and there is a touch of hop presence in the bitter pine sense.

M- Full feeling, chewy with decent carbonation and a dry finish.

O- I have walked past Clown Shoes beers every time I head to the states. I won't be doing that anymore, this thing is a beast and I can't wait to go back and get more of this and more from them.

Poured from a 22oz bottle into a duvel glass

A: pours black... Pitch black... With two fingers off chocolaty mocha colored head, that dissapates nicley, a touch on the slow side, and leavs some light lacing....

S: the smell of dark Malts starting wafting from the glass as I was pouring this one... I get smoke and dry milk chocolate, along
With a bit of alcohol and a vague coffe note, it seems like am getting faded citric hop notes in there as well, this bottle has a touch of age on it...
Bottle date says 9/11.

T: taste is much like the nose except for the smoke seems a bit more prominent... Not overwhelingly so, but deffinatly I the fore front. I get get dry milk chocolate notes intermingling with the smoke, and a touch of dark fruit and faded hop bitterness on the finish. and again a touch of coffe, more smoky the roasty.

M: big bodied and viscous with low/medium carbonation. The finish is dry and a bit on the bitter side... Not a huge fan of the finish. Drinks pretty good for a
12.5 abv brew.

O: a good RIS, With some serious heft behind it, not my fav, but deffinatly worth a try, we will see what happens to this with a little age, maybe the finish will round out a little bit. Personally I would have enjoyed a little less smokiness and a lot more roastyness,
And some caramel and vanilla notes woulda been nice here too.

Poured pitch black in color from a 22 oz bottle, with ABV clearly marked on the label. Perfect appearance for a RIS.
Dark mocha colored one finger head that dissipated very quickly.
Lots of roasted malts in the nose, with some coffee, chocolate and hints of smoke.
Taste is very roasty and bitter upfront with some elements of smoke. Bitterness is dominant from the beginning and slowly recedes towards the finish. There is a nice sweetness in the aftertaste that counters the bitter notes perfectly. Rarely have I come across a sweet after-taste following a strong roasty bitter notes in a RIS.
Alcohol warmth is noticeable, but doesn't come across in the taste. Mouthfeel was bordering on full-bodied.
A big beer that has all the makings of a perfect sipper.
Overall, this is a really good RIS and I am sure some age will only make it better. Definitely worth a try and comes recommended.

The perfectly black, opaque body, and the khaki colored head, gave this beer the proper RIS look. The smell was heavy on chocolate, coffee, and toffee, but I could not detect any dark fruit type aromas. The taste was that of dusty cocoa, vanilla beans, coffee, and molasses. There was a sour, soy sauce like note permeating throughout. The body of the beer was much thinner that I was expecting. The feel was oily and slippery. The alcohol content was quite concealed, and this did not drink at all like a 12.5% ABV beer. Some warmth in the finish. Nicely put together.

22oz bottle poured into a large CBS Snifter

A: Pours a deep dark brownish black with a nice 1-2finger mocha head. Minor head retention and lacing.

S: Smells of roasted malts, chocolate, coffee a hint of alcohol.

T: Roasted malts, coffee, chocolate. Alcohol comes through mid taste and continues to linger. Alcohol is present, but not overbearing.

M: Medium body low carbonation.

O: A decent RIS. Fairly boozy at times, but just about right. Many thanks to Rochefort10nh, as this was an extra he included in trade.

A: This poured an opaque pitch black with moderate tan head.
S: It smelled like lots of chocolate and chili powder, with some roasted coffee and brown sugar and molasses.
T: It tasted like citrus hops and roasted coffee, with bitter dark chocolate and copper. It had a clean and bitter aftertaste that was somewhat harsh.
M: It was thick and chewy, with moderate carbonation. Huge body.
D: This had a beautiful look and scent and body. The taste and finish weren't as great, but they were still decent. The alcohol wasn't too noticeable, given how strong the brew is, but it was definitely better to sip. Age would likely improve the beer, but it was still quite enjoyable fresh. Worth seeking out.

22 oz. bottle poured into a snifter.

A: Pours a completely pitch black color that never yields to the light. The head is a two finger mocha color with pretty poor retention and lacing.

S: Roasted malt, brown sugar, coffee, licorice, chocolate, wood, subtle smoke, and a little booze come together in the scent. Nothing out of the ordinary, but executed nicely.

T: The first thing I notice is how well attenuated this one is. It's not very sweet (at all) yet the booze presence is only moderate. The initial sip is heavy on roasty notes, which temporarily gives way to flavors of anise seed and coffee. The finish is fairly boozy (to the point where it burns slightly at times), but overall it has surprising drinkability for a 12.5% RIS. Faint hints of dark fruit can be tasted, and the presence of soy sauce, bitter dark chocolate, and smoke pop after several sips. General flavor is savory rather than sweet, with solid complexity and balance.

M: Here's where things disappoint slightly. I like how the big roasty presence gives it solid dryness overall, but it's lacking in body for a big stout. The dryness combined with the alcohol presence gives a nice mouthwatering sensation, though. The booze warms the body nicely, making it a great winter brew (how I wish it was still January...) While it could use a more delicate persona, I can't find much fault in its general drinkability. Low carbonation.

O: I was pleasantly surprised with this one. It bears a passing resemblance to Yeti, which is always a great thing in my mind. It's a very big beer, but it's never too bloated for its own good. Even still, it's best to share this mutha with friends. It's kind of expensive - I paid $11 for a bottle - but I'd say it's worth it if you're looking for a night-capping sipper to share with others.
