1443rd Review on BA
Bottle to Karl Strauss 23rd Snifter

Bottled 10/11

Served at cellar temp.
Shared with my buddy Chris

Thanks to BA Cliffbrake for this extra

App- Its a good a starting color, very dark brown, bordering on black in the center and quite dense. The outer coloring is an amber/purplish color. A nice starting two finger quick receding head was there and feel so a small pool. Not so much in way of lace or cling though.

Smell- A lot going on in this glass. Opens up quite roasty and a thick malt aroma. The thing that got me was the underlying quad notes. Dark bing cherries and plums intermixed with a dry roast coffee and hoppy and booze aromas.. Traces of bitter on a large sniff/pull.

Taste- This is a nice beer, just not the profile I am used to for an RIS. Its a large and boozy beer intermixed with some new elements. I will say, I know most RIS will have a roast, malt, coffee note, but this flips the script and combines that with the quad, plums, cherry and hops. Its a tasty beer but far too bitter for the profile I look for. Keep the bitter for my IPA/DIPAs.

Mouth- A lighter medium to full medium body has its balance off at some points. A good medium body with a nice richness and fullness behind it. Residual dark fruits and bitter flavors.

Drink- Overall, its a very tasty beer. The quad elements take it to a new twist. Not my favorite profile of an RIS as mentioned but its above average and flavorful.

Poured into a Maudite snifter. Pours pitch black. Nice two finger brown head with great retention and lacing. looks good. Good aroma of sweet roasted malt and chocolate, a bit of booze. Flavor is bitter chocolate and coffee with a toasted malt middle and chocolate and hop finish. A bit dry in the middle, but overall a good flavor progression and the rich flavor covers the booze noticed in the aroma. Nice creamy medium to heavy body. A nicely made, spot on RIS. Clown Shoes just arrived for the first time to our area and I was uncertain about the light hearted approach to labelling, but I'm impressed with their beers so far. Nothing unusual yet, but hit the styles nicely.

A: Poured a deep dark brownish black color with good carbonation presenting a nice brown cap, some bubbles and good amount of lacing

S: Big roasted and perhaps black patent; chocolate and coffee are big

T: A good roastiness upfront with light booze sting buried between layers of cocoa and coffee. The finish is rather dry, clean and some bitterness witha booze burn

M: Big bodied with good carbonation, sweet, coating and heavy on the palate with lingering roastiness

O: Pretty good overall

Thanks Bruce! Pours pitch black with a large, light tan head. Scent is a ton of roasted malt. Dark chocolate with some clean, light caramel malt as well. A bit of cake batter with semi sweet chocolate chips. Taste is initially dark chocolate with that lovely cake batter flavor. Bitter-sweet chocolate flavors, but with a mellowed out vanilla flavor. Mouthfeel is full bodied with a great hidden alcohol profile. Drinkability is scary-high for almost 13%. Overall, I love clown shoes so far. They have impressed me.

22 oz bottle, date of 10/11 on the label, so almost a year old.

black, with dark tan head that fades quickly. smells a bit acidic and roasty, and some coffee. taste is very good. bold roasted malt, earthy hop aftertaste. no booziness for being almost 13% abv. thick, smooth. full bodied, low carbonation. right on for the style.

overall - very solid RIS.

A: Espresso black coloring pours to two and a half fingers worth of deep brown, chocolate-mousse colored head. Dissipates to a thick and smooth pillow of head.

S: Very deep dark roasted malts. Dark chocolate, espresso, with some nice grassy grain aromas that lead into a nice floral hop aroma. I can also smell a nice rich chocolate marshmallow ice cream flavor.

T: Very bold roasted flavors here. Strong dark maltyness right from the get go leading to those espresso flavorings. Smokeyness is there as well at the very end and im still tasting chocolate marshmallow ice cream that I caught on the nose. The floral hops that came thru earlier is struggling to break out, picking up just the slightest hints in the mix of all the bold roasted flavors.

M: Very creamy, full bodied beer. Light carbonation works well with the bold flavors and the creamyness on the palette also works well with the chocolate and coffee flavors. Alcohol is noticeable but for a 12.5 ABV, its very very stealthy.

O: Very robust brew that fits the Russian Imperial Stout genre. Very flavorful and everything is balanced and works well.

Pours as close to black as beer can get with a fluffy dark tan head, a full 2" tall when sent into a standard pint glass. Head breaks up and drops to a well-retained 1/2" of creaminess. Huge sheets of lacing.
Smell is roasted malt, bittersweet chocolate, cardboard. Balance is good but not as many notes as I expected or as strongly presented.
Taste is roasted malt, dark chocolate, light soy, smoke/peat. Great balance and great complexity. There is a slight whiskey nature to it as there is in many Imp. Stouts.
Warming and very full-bodied, light, almost negligible effervescence. Smooth like silk, this brew just slides across the lips and tongue and onward down the throat with little more effort than water. A bit scary for a 12.5% Imperial! I don't know what I'm seeing, smelling and tasting that others aren't, but I'm sure glad I am, this beer rocks!

22oz bomber into Delirium tulip

A - midnight black, motor oil. Vigorous pour yields about one finger of dark brown frothy head. Quickly vanishes leaving moderate lacing.

S - bittersweet chocolate, roasted malt, smokiness and toffee. Not an overpowering nose but inviting.

T - dark chocolate, nice and creamy up front. Smokiness and bitterness take-over midway and hold tight through the finish. Quite a nice bite for a RIS. Smokiness is perhaps a bit too high here and the booze is present on the aftertaste.

M - spot on. Creamy, smooth, great carbonation. Not a BA oil slick like alot are moving towards now days, but a great presence on the palate.

O - my first sampling of Clown Shoes and its quite good. Not in the league of BA RIS but VERY few non-BA are (there really should be two seperate categories IMHO). This stout drinks scarily easy for its ABV. The booze is present on the aftertaste but fades. A really solid, affordable RIS. Cant wait to try my other Clown Shoes beers.

this is a really black beer. It also has a lot of alcohol in it.

It is dark as night and pours with minimal head.

The smell is of a very strong bitter dark chocolate bar that was melted and made into beer form.

Taste is thick, a little bitter. Dark Chocolate.

Overall not a bad beer. It's surprising how well the alcohol is hidden, you cannot even taste it.

650ml bottle 12,5% ABV.
Served lightly chilled in an over sized wine glass.
Bottled in: January 2012

Appearance: Blaecorn Unidragon looks pitch black in the glass, but sadly a strong back light reveals a wide ring of deep red along the edges. A rough pour yields a massive, creamy, tan coloured head that displays great retention for a 12,5% beer and leaves chunky rings of lace clinging to the glass.

Smell: Mmmm, this smells pretty damn good! Notes include: Dark chocolate, cocoa, dark caramel, sweet dark fruits (distinct raisin and black cherries), roasted malt, a touch of smoke, roasted nuts, a little liquorice, some char, and an earthy hop character. As the beer warms, the dark fruits seem to become more dominant. A hint of the 12,5% is noted, but it is far from bothersome.

Taste: Wow, this has far more roasted malt character than I expected and feels almost European in this respect. Flavour notes include: Dark roasted malt, a little char, a hint of smoke, dark chocolate, dark caramel, sweet dark fruits and a touch of earthy hops in the finish. The finish is moderately bitter, with a lingering roasted flavour.

Mouthfeel: Medium-full bodied, with a fairly high level of smooth carbonation. I think a fuller, heavy body would have made a huge difference to overall feel of the beer.

Overall: Blaecorn Unidragon is a very tasty imperial stout, that seems to fall midway between European and American styles. I have a feeling that a peated whisky barrel aged version would be outstanding.
