This was served from the cask at The Old Toad in Rochester, NY. It arrived in a house pint glass glowing a hazy golden brown. Flecks of a head were visible, with the same noted for lacing. No sediment was found, and carbonation appeared light. The aroma came with bittered phenolic plastics, pale malts, dirty woodiness, mineral sandiness, strawberry and cherry sugars, booze, caramel maltiness, and a very faint grassy hop. Our first impression was that the flavoring was light and mild, but smooth. As we sipped, the flavoring opened with nice woody notes from the cask, with lighter brushes of fruit and weakly roasted malts. The middle peaked with metallic coffee twang, hollow woodiness to dry and cut any initial sweetness. Residual malty sugars come to pull us to the finish, where bitter grassy hops enter to further cut any remaining seriousness of toasted caramel, pale malts, and ghostly coffee malts. The aftertaste breathed of warmed alcohol, grassy hops, sweet cherry, bittered woodiness, and drying tannins. The body was light, bordering on watery, and the carbonation was light. There was thin slurp and smack, with little cream or froth to the lips. The coating was initially wet but made way for a final astringent bite. The abv was appropriate, and the beer sipped easily.

Overall, what we enjoyed most about this brew was the ease of drinking, and the smooth blend of flavoring. The most robust thing about it was actually the phenolic smack to the nose. While this woke you up it did tend to overpower some of the more subtle notes of hops, and any depth to the malts. The cask did add a nice woody flavoring, but it too took from the “pale aledness” just a bit too much. This made for a relatively thin and rather weak offering.

Poured from a 650 ml bottle into a hand glass.

A: Dark amber hue. Pours a 2 finger, tight, foamy, white head. Very persistent. Thick beer ring lacing.

S: Light floral hops. Not much else.

T: Light hops, and a little Italian spice.

M: Light and crisp. Steely finish.

D: Session.

Atmosphere is nice. Large, persistent head, and thick beer ring lacing. Nose is hoppy and floral. Light hop bitterness and a little bit of a spicy character. Overall, this is decent quaff.

Poured from a 22oz bottle into a mug glass. Label reads “Bottled 9/2012”.

A: The beer is a cloudy amber color, with a short dense off-white head that fades slowly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains light caramelized malts, a good amount of hops, some honey and some citrus.

T: The taste starts out bready with a hearty but not too heavy malt character followed by some sweetness from flavors of caramel, honey and some citrus. The hops presence is decent for the style and brings some balance. The after-taste is slightly bready and slightly sweet.

M: Crisp and a little smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

O: A little tasty, goes down ok, not too filling, decent kick, good representation of style, it’s a decent beer but there are better options in the style.

22 ounce bottle - $4.99 at Bullock's Wine & Spirits in Marietta, Georgia.

The little white box on the label where I would expect a bottle date is left blank.

Appearance: Pours a slightly hazed, amber-gold body with a tallish, lightly yellow head. Adequate lacework.

Smell: Spicy, sweetish, fruity, lightly earthy nose. Toasted onion rolls, cooked orchard fruits dosed with spices and sugars. A bit different.

Taste: Toasty pale malts, with touches of biscuit and bread crust. Moderate light brown sugar sweetness. Apricot and apple fruitiness. Spicy hops, lightly earthy, with some herbal tones with an edge of mint leaf. The toastiness, the brown sugar qualities never quite drop out, leaving a bittersweet, soft finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium-level, gentle carbonation.

Overall: It's good, albeit not your run-of-the-mill pale ale, so, I can see many people not quite digging it..

deep amber pour with a finger of off-white colored head, some lacing left behind. smells very tropical - mango, pineapple, peaches with almost a belgian style yeast scent. the flavor is definitely not right. tastes like pee, with some flower petals.. bready. medium body, moderate carbonation.

after doing some research and seeing the date on the label i bought, not only is this beer retired, it was bottled almost a year ago. year old pale ale isn't going to taste as it did fresh, and it doesn't seem like it helped improve any qualities.
