22 oz. bottle poured into a CCB snifter. Bottled on 10/11/12.
A - Pours midnight black with nearly a finger of almond head. Shows good retention for a beer this big. The thick halo of carbonation that remains, leaves a nice tiered lacing as I drink.
S - Smells of vanilla, huge burnt oak, black coffee, and single malt bourbon. Molasses and candied figs add a rich quality to the aroma.
T - Starts with sweet toffee and vanilla. Oak hits midpalate, offering a nice drying bitter character. Chocolate and bourbon on the finish with a smokey sweet aftertaste. The flavors are in your face and work very well.
M - Medium-heavy body with mellow carbonation. A nice smooth feel.
O - I am a fan of Blaecorn, so I was excited to see the BA version on the shelf. I think this version is a bit sweeter than the original, and despite the addition of smoked malt, it doesn't have the same level of burnt flavors. The barrel adds an interesting dynamic to this beer, and it maintains great bourbon and oak flavors without being over the top. This one holds up pretty well against the highly coveted BA Stouts out there, without having to jump through hoops to get it. I am glad I picked up a few, so I can see what a year or two does to this beer. I highly recommend it for bourbon beer enthusiasts.
